Hiking (Chester Town Forest) 1:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Hike around complete trail to check need for additional work. Basically done except for cleaning up the treadpath along ridge. Nice loop for hiking or running. Too steep and narrow in places for skiing.

Roller skiing (Andover Rd) 33:00 [3] 6.8 mi (4:51 / mi)

Didn't plan on anything today, but Tom D called and we headed out to Horseshoe Acres. Layers of Neosporin, Solarcain and Body Glide seemed to do the trick and the skating went fine.

O - competition race (NA Rogaine Champs) 23:45:00 [3] 78.0 km (18:16 / km)

Don't know details of distance; will have to figure it out and add. [measured at 78 km; less than usual, but lost lots of time at the stop]

Somewhat painful experience with Glen Brake. First 12 hours saw regular rain showers, some hard, and lots of wet vegetation. Feet stayed together rather well, but o-pants and running shorts underneath got soaked and did some serious chaffing action. Ok until about midnight, then thighs said enough was enough. Think raw beef. In fact left thigh swelled up and looked like an uncooked quarter pounder was slapped on the inside of my leg.

Went back to the hash house for repairs and changed clothing plan. Lots of Bag Balm and Neosporin cooled the burn. Some Ibu dropped the pain to tolerable and we headed out for the second half.

Running was cut back quite a bit and buskwacking over the usual logs and brush was just dandy.

Generally nav was good, but fell behind plan and got caught out without our heavy duty lights when we got into the trickest section (66 and 25). Our mini-LED lights didn't cut it in the convoluted terrain and had to bail, much to our disgust. Did much better when we picked up the big lights during the hash house stop (my 12 watt LED headlamp courtesy of Dan).

Enjoyed the excellent map, terrain and event put on by Francis. Pleasure factor will further increase once the scabs form and fall off and I forget about the periods of discomfort.

Don't know full results, but Joe B took overall and Glen and I won supervets.

Local roads and bike path.

Roller skiing (Rock Creek) 1:00:00 [3] 9.2 mi (6:31 / mi)

In DC with Kenny. Nice roller skiing on roads closed to traffic on weekends. Also a little bit of roller blading, but most of that was all Kenny.

Cross Training 1:00:00 [2]

Chainsaw work all day. Cut down big pine tree at the bottom of the corner on the Pines trail. This tree has had my name on it for 4 years and finally decided to nail it before it nailed me. Now we have a fast sweeper and a great loop.

Bicycling (Kingdom Valley Trails) 45:00 [3] 5.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

First, down to Benny's to pick up the car. Then a lap around the ski trails. They're in good shape as the ground is dry and growing has slowed down.

Roller skiing (Rte 103) 1:51:00 [3] 17.0 mi (6:32 / mi)
shoes: V2 Aero

With Tom from HS all the way to I-91and back. Good pace going down, but some difficuty on the return. About half way back jammed the carbide tip of one pole into a crack and ripped it out. Took me down in a solid crash. Hit on my shoulder and helmet. Thought it was a hard smack on the helmet, but later couldn't even find a scratch. Makes me consider the forces involved in the RAAM bike crash last year when I shattered the helmet into little pieces.

Out 51, back 60 (with broken pole)

Roller skiing (Rte 103) 1:13:30 [3] 12.1 mi (6:04 / mi)
shoes: V2 Aero

From HS to Vt Country Store with Tom. Nice steady pace and perfect temperature. Good outing on rolling terrain and wide shoulders, a few big trucks. Out 35/ back 38.
12 pullups

Road Running (Chester via PO) 1:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Early morning; stiff, slow, knee sore.

Saturday Aug 11, 2007 #

Cross Training (Chester Town Forest) 1:00:00 [2]

Morning spent trail cutting and brushing back saplings. Trail is now 80% complete, blazed and tred path established over its 2 mile length. Will double it with a western section next year. Going back to fill in detail features for a o-map.

Bicycling (Harpoon Pt-Pt) 2:00:00 [2] 25.0 mi (4:48 / mi)
shoes: Grey Ghost Roubaix

Same loop as Wednesday with Ruthie, except had plenty of company on the ride. Plus finished up at the brewery for a late lunch and beers. Couple of extra hill sprints for an extra workout.
10 pullups

Note

Skipped the run today as knee still felt funky and really didn't have time. Will hit it with long, easy exercise tomorrow.

Trail Running (Ascutney Mtn traverse) 1:43:00 [3] 6.1 mi (16:53 / mi) +750m 12:13 / mi

With Erin and Kristoffer plus Loki, up the Weathersfield Trail to the summit and back down the Brownsville Trail. Beautiful view from the summit. Good trail conditions. Enjoyed having the company to push me along and having two cars to do the traverse. Up 58/down 45.
Hammered knee on the way down. See how it feels for an easy run tomorrow.

Bicycling (Brownsville/Hartland) 2:15:00 [2] 25.0 mi (5:24 / mi)
shoes: Grey Ghost Roubaix

Checking out route of 25 mile Harpoon Brewery ride for Saturday with Ruthie. Got to do everything except visit the brewery. First half gradually uphill, then a screaming 3 mile drop into Hartland. Should be fun with a couple hundred riders at wildly varying velocities. First time Ruthie was out this summer, so took our time.

Roller skiing (Andover Rd) 49:22 [4] 8.4 mi (5:53 / mi)
weight:162lbs shoes: V2 Aero

Got out of the shower after the bike ride and Tom called to go rollerskiing. Waited at the start point for a half hour and then took off, annoyed he didn't show. Had enough irritation I headed out at a fast pace. Met him on the way back and turned around for more. Kept a good pace all the way to the finish (3.40/km).
Net out and back loop 40.22/6.8 mi.
Pullups 10

Road Running (Chester via Church St) 1:01:00 [4] 7.0 mi (8:43 / mi)
weight:164lbs

Hot, muggy, but felt like doing a hard run, so pushed it anyway. Brought some water to keep hydrated. Heat took its toll, but ok with the run.

Monday Aug 6, 2007 #

Roller skiing (Rte 103) 1:09:30 [3] 10.1 mi (6:53 / mi)

Down the main drag towards I-91 starting from the high school. Nice wide shoulder and rolling hills. This is also part of my bike tempo ride, so getting to know it pretty well. Felt good.

Saturday Aug 4, 2007 #

Note

Genesis AR Allamuchy, NJ. Ended up 3rd Masters. Pretty disappointing. Lost a lot of time on the mtn bike section, and didn't get it back on the trek as we kept to a pretty slow pace.

Kayaking 1:27:00 [3] 5.0 mi (17:24 / mi)

Down and back on the Musconetcong River. Swollen some from fierce thunderstorms Friday night. Section against a fair current at the end.

Bicycling 2:53:00 [3] 13.0 mi (13:18 / mi)

Trail wasn't muddy from the rain, but rocks and logs were slick. Rode conservatively and it cost us a lot of time -- 20 minutes. Lost about 5 minutes at the start looking for the first trail. I-80 was mapped in the wrong location (200 m off!) and were confused at first.

O - competition 1:59:00 [3] 10.0 km (11:54 / km)

Picked up 7 minutes on this despite walking the hills. Brad was getting hit hard by the heat, so we kept to a steady, but easy pace.

Track workout (400 m) 30:00 [3] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Hot and slow:
1.43, 1.37, 1.36, 1.37, 1.37, 1.42
Need to stay on top of this track stuff or all the speed evaporates.
