MTB cycling 1:25:00 [1]

After a couple of rides on the river trail, it was time to wash my bike. So I did. Then I decided that a clean bike should be used and went for a MTB ride on roads and the bike paths.

I had a map with me. I made a 1:25,000 map for Sandy for something she's setting up. I figured it'd be good to test it. It is ok. The bike path doesn't show up well, so I'm going to try changing the symbol to make it more visible. I also spotted a few new or changed roads. When I got home I made the changes.

The town is more busy that it was a week or so ago. More cars driving around and fewer people walking and biking on the Lawrence Loop.

Fun.

1

Note

I will eat no beans today.

running 10:00 [2]

Warming up. Seemed hotter than I expected, especially in the sun.

When I got home, I checked the airport weather station and the temp was 79F when I was running. Not especially hot, but warmer than I would like.

running race 27:14 [4] 5.0 km (5:27 / km)
ahr:167 max:175

NoLaw 5K. Running as a "virtual race" this season, so I ran on my own and right after work.

It was uncomfortable. The sun in the first 2 miles heats you up more than you'd think. I shuffled along and kept slowing down while also working harder.

As usual, I hit the two mile mark behind my 5K pr. That always makes me laugh.

For the NoLaw summer series, you can run any time during the designated weeks. Mary pointed out I could get up early some morning and run when the temps are lower. Maybe I'll do that for June.

3

Dinner - Mary made a steak salad with cannellini beans.

Thursday May 28, 2020 #

Note

Felt a bit out of it all afternoon. Instead of running the 5K, I took a nap. Feeling a bit better now, but still planning to go to bed at 8:15.

I'll aim to run the 5K tomorrow after work.

Wednesday May 27, 2020 #

Note

Mowed the lawn and then did some yard work - filled a yard waste cart for pick up tomorrow.

I think I'll run the NoLaw 5K course tomorrow.

Mary is making fish stew for dinner (with Cannellini beans).

Tuesday May 26, 2020 #

Note

Pinto beans with lunch.

Planned to mow the lawn after work. Rain fell all day. Postponing the mowing till tomorrow.

Dinner - Beans! Black beans.

Monday May 25, 2020 #

running 1:10:00 [2]

Easy shuffling on West Campus and the main campus. Misty rain for about half of the run.

Note

Refried beans with dinner.

MTB cycling 2:05:00 [1]

MTB on roads, levee and single track. I got out around 9. Not too terrible, but it felt like a day that will be hot, muggy and a good chance of some big storms.

I was on the sugar loop and rounded a corner and met a duck. A duck and two ducklings about 5 meters ahead of me and sitting on the trail. The mother took me to be a predator and ran/shuffled off along the trail with wings flailing around. The duck was trying to look injured to draw my attention from the ducklings. The ducklings waddled along the trail behind their mom. Eventually, all three moved off the trail and watched me as I went by. In all my years on the river trails, that was the first time I'd seen a duck on the trail.

All in all a nice ride.

I was resigned to having a bean-free day. But, Mary just announced that there are kidney beans in our meal tonight!

I did the last 2 Ulrik's Hill courses Gene designed. Fun. It was starting to get warm out.

running 25:00 [2]

I took the day off work. And when I woke up my left knee was sore. That's strange.

I did a little test jog and things seem ok. My left knee feels better now than before the jog.

1

I also spent some time reading stuff on AP.

I was inspired to find an old essay from a former Red Sox employee. Among other things, he wrote:

"Did you ever think about this: that Bullshit has a huge advantage over actual knowledge, in that bullshit can be created and deployed wherever it is needed, whereas actual knowledge has very limited ability to travel?"

And

"Generally, we decry and denounce bullshit. My point here is that actually there is a huge advantage to bullshit. It fits everywhere. You never run out of it. It’s always in stock. Once you decide that you are happy answering questions with bullshit. . .you’re set. The cupboard is always full."

And

"But research isn’t like that; research runs out. Research is always in limited supply. Research is never around when you need it most. That’s why knowledge can never take the place of good, old-fashioned, time-tested bullshit."

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Rolling around on the bike paths with Mary. Fun. Easy pace. My left knee feels fine.

My night to prepare dinner. We're doing another baseball evening - watch a re-run of a Fubon Guardians game (recent games have all been rained out) and eat hot dogs. No beans tonight.

Thursday May 21, 2020 #

running 45:00 [2]

Shuffling around on West Campus. I listened to a podcast while I ran - an interview with Jonas Leandersson. I've got about half of it left. So far, it has been interesting.

Taking tomorrow off of work. No plans, but it will be nice to have a day off.

Mary was responsible for dinner and we had J Wilson's take out. Good, but no beans. Fortunately, I had left over beans and Italian sausage for lunch.

1

Wednesday May 20, 2020 #

running 25:00 [2]

I went for a short jog. I was moving slowly and not running very well, but it was nice to be out.

I did some yard work when I got home - filled a yard waste cart for tomorrow's pick up.

Dinner - Beans! Garlic, cumin, tomato paste, broccoli, black beans and cheese.

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

MTB on the roads, levee and single track. Fun and a nice day.

1

On the bean front...Mary is making dinner and I think we're having BBQ beans as a side.

Monday May 18, 2020 #

Note

Mowed the lawn. Fun!

Dinner - my night to cook and I'm going to make Stracciatella alla Romana. That means no beans. But, don't worry, I ate some carrots and hummus, so I've consumed a small amount of beans.

Yesterday's bean consumption was baked beans as a side order with a take out BBQ sandwich.

MTB cycling 2:05:00 [1]

MTB on the roads, bike paths, and river trail. Fun and a nice day to be out.

On the river trail I saw a guy walking a bike going the wrong way. He walked a bit oddly. I stopped to make sure he was ok. He said he was testing a new bike and had gone over the handlebars. His shoulder hurt. He had a phone and didn't seem to be in any real difficulty. It didn't look like he'd hit his head (his helmet looked clean and undamaged). I biked on.

KU commencement would have been this weekend. I guess it was, but it was all virtual. I saw a fair amount of graduates out around campus taking photos. It was a good day for that, clear blue sky with a few clouds. I also saw a few parties in front of houses near campus. (And heard some kids singing Abba songs as I went by). I would say that the social distancing in Lawrence wasn't so good today.

And that reminds me of a story in the Topeka paper this morning:

On pavement to/from the band practice field where I locked my bike while running. I used my old hardtail bike. I've gotten used to full suspension.

I did the first 3 courses that Gene set on Ulrik's Hill. I just jogged through and didn't bother using UsynligO.

The last course had a route choice option to the finish. I think the best route was to turn back, go past the police station and then head up the road. But I wanted to run up Ulrik's Hill. So I took that route instead.

running 30:00 [2]

Some extra running to add a bit of time. I wandered slowly around parts of West Campus.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

A little bike ride. Some hills.

I had left overs for lunch, that means I had beans.

Tonight is my night to make dinner. So we are having a baseball meal. We'll eat hot dogs and watch a re-play of today's Fubon Guardians game.

Thursday May 14, 2020 #

running 45:00 [2]

Shuffling around on West Campus. Running felt pretty good. That usually means I was going slow.

Kind of warm out and feels like a storm might pop up at any minute.

Today...no beans.

1

Wednesday May 13, 2020 #

running 25:00 [2]

A short jog on West Campus. It felt good.

I did some yard work when I got home.

Beans?

I made a serious mistake today. I walked into the kitchen for lunch and made a ham and cheese sandwich. As I was eating it, I remembered that I had leftover beans and sausage in the fridge. But it was too late to change. Dinner tonight is baked salmon with rice and broccoli. So today will be no beans.

1

Tuesday May 12, 2020 #

Note

Had some trouble sleeping last night and feeling it today. So just went for a walk instead of a run.

Mary made dinner tonight. Fried tofu. Since tofu is from soybeans, I had beans!

Monday May 11, 2020 #

running 30:00 [2]

Easy jog on West Campus. Rain fell, briefly.

My night to cook. I have a bean recipe that I like. But last trip to the grocery store the dry beans were all gone. I tried my recipe with canned beans. It was ok, but not as good. The recipe is basically just carrots, onions, garlic, beans and Italian sausage.

I did the MTBO course with the UsynligO app. My app time was 17:30. But my Garmin time started a little earlier and finished a little later. The time to beat was 17:45, so I was happy to 17:30. Blair did 17:45.

I think the main advantage I had was using a MTBO map holder. Blair just carried the map in his hand. Blair is a better rider and fitter (and younger) than me. But the map holder must have saved a good minute.

Fun.

MTB cycling 2:15:00 [1]

Longish MTB on roads, the levee and the river trail. I biked over to Burcham.

At Burcham, I took a sort break to connect to the Jones family Google Meet. I made a brief appearance.

Then I biked over the to the river trail and did a lap. I was surprised to see few cars when I arrived. That was nice. There weren't many people on the trails. But when I got back after my lap, the parking lot was full and lots of people were getting ready to head out. I guess the cool weather kept people from starting earlier.

Note

I'm watching a good bit of Taiwanese baseball. A few days ago the main video feed (Eleven Sports Taiwan) stopped showing the live stream of games. They got lots of push back and have started showing the games again. You can also catch games from live feeds from the CTBC Brothers and Fubon Guardians. I don't know if the Lions and Monkeys also stream their games.

They've started allowing some fans back. The Guardians had 1000 fans in the stadium. It is kind of fun to see.

I'm not a die hard fan of any team. But my current favorite is the Fubon Guardians. I'm hoping the CPBL starts shipping team gear out of Taiwan. I need a Guardians jersey or cap.

Speaking of Taiwan. I updated my comparison of Johnson County, KS, and Taiwan. JoCo is now pulling away in both Covid-19 case and deaths. It is kind of depressing to see how screwed up the U.S. is.

Mary set up an informal O' practice and social distancing picnic at Burcham Park. I ran the course with no warm up.

We used the UsynligO app. The name is fine in Norwegian, but it doesn't flow very well in English. There's a strong tendency for people to call it "u-sin-lingo" too. Still, it is a nice tool.

I picked up the pace as I went. But, not enough. Fritz ran it faster.

The picnic was fine - Fritz, Blair, Mary, Sandy, Gene and me all sitting in a circle a good 10 feet apart. Fun to chat and a good group. We also had a chat with an odd guy who was fishing (and catching) catfish.

It was Mary's night to cook. She makes a meal that's tortillas with eggs, cheese salsa and refried beans. Beans!

MTB cycling 40:00 [1]

MTB on roads. I went through a bit of the Oread neighborhood and saw lots of students in front yards for parties...no evidence of social distancing.

Seemed like a long work day.

Dinner: I mixed up beans, broccoli, tomato paste, garlic cumin and a few other things. Top with cheddar cheese and bake. It is something like chili but quicker to make. So after two days with no beans, tonight we have beans.

1

running 45:00 [2]

Easy run on West Campus. Cool (55F) and some light rain.

Today is three years to the day (and to the hour as I write this) since my Dad died.

Mary is handling dinner tonight. She's getting takeout from the Burger Stand. That's two days in a row where I will have no beans.

Wednesday May 6, 2020 #

Note

Mowing the lawn and loading up a cart of yard waste for pick up tomorrow.

For dinner I baked salmon and added potatoes and broccoli. Good. But, no beans.

I went for a jog on West Campus. Nice day, but windy. It felt good to get out and move around.

Mary made a salad for dinner. Very good. It had beans.

MTB on the roads, a little gravel, and some bike path.

My right ankle feels pretty good, but clicking in/out of the pedals is a little uncomfortable. I might try a little jog tomorrow.

I ate an oatmeal cookie on the ride.

A long sprinty course at Kill Creek.

On the way to 8, I stepped in a hole and rolled my right ankle. The good luck - I was only a few steps from the car when it happened. The bad luck - if my foot had landed 1/2 inch in any direction, I wouldn't have turned the ankle.

I stopped and got it wrapped up within maybe 90 seconds of turning the ankle. Then I got the foot elevated. I think it will be fine.

Fun course with some route choice options. It felt hot and I walked a bit a couple of times.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

I rolled around on the roads. Fun, but kind of muggy out.

Inspired by Tom and Brooke, I will add a note about my post-ride meal. I mixed up tomato, garlic, broccoli, and black beans. Added some cheese. Baked it.
