Canadian Ski Marathon, day 1
Back up to QC for the Canadian Ski Marathon. This would be my 7th trip and 5th Gold which if completed would qualify me for my permanent bib number. In the 53 years this event has been running only 378 have been given out so far. I have a number of friends who have started but not completed this event on one occasion or another so it was not a given that I'd finish.
Leading up to the event my time on snow was relatively low with only one ski over 5 hours and a few between 2 and 3 hrs. Hopefully I'd benefit from some cross-training and previous experience.
The weather forecast looked pretty solid with highs in the low teens and a low of -2F Saturday night when we would be camping out in Gold Camp. I errored on the conservative side and brought along a fresh set of clothes to change into after day 1 and also included a new Rab ultralight tarp to be set up over me in the case that it snowed again like last year.
The bus ride to the start was just as eventful as last year. The driver drove right past the start location again despite the flashing lights, cones, spot lights etc on the road at 5:30a. I don't get it. Lining up as close to the start is critical to avoid getting stuck behind the inevitable bottlenecks that start near the early downhills. We rushed from the bus to the start, hopped into our skis and the gun went off moments later.
Our deliberate effort to minimize delays worked well and I had clear track within minutes. The first section is pretty enjoyable and I could tell that the snow was pretty fast from the rain the area had received earlier in the week. Fortunately the groomers were able to til up the transformed snow with a few inches of fresh snow and VR35 worked well all weekend.
By the third section it was obvious that things were going well. The fast snow allowed a lot of double-poling and I was making easy progress through the course. I decided to back off a little by the end of that section as it made no sense to get to Gold Camp too early.
Even with easing off I still made it there before 2pm. EG beat me there and had scoped out the best location for camp to avoid the wind blowing campfire smoke into us all night. I changed, put on all my down and then set up my accommodations.
It seems like there has been a focus on improving Gold Camp the last few years. A large bonfire besides the individual camp versions was added this year to the 2 person band (kick drum, fiddle, accordion, guitar, harp)and the beer added a couple of years ago. It was quite a sing-along for a few hours past dark. Unfortunately it was all in French but I recognized some of the songs from races past when James or Alex would try to keep everyone awake. Everyone was sleeping by 8:00pm.
