4 PM

Mountain biking 2:10:00 [3] 23.51 km (5:32 / km) +492m 5:00 / km
ahr:124 max:152

C-w loop over to Coull from the south side of Mortlich then back to Dess bowl by Lochmanse. Road around the top of the bowl then onto the military road and fields back from Lumphanan.
Struggling to find the love on my awkward heavy MTB and really not enjoying hoiking it over too many gates (~28 in total, half of which were either locked or too difficult to open). Got a real tweak from my sore foot at one point when I tried to push off - not what I am looking for right now.
But at least I got out and it had dried up nicely. Really mustn't grumble.

Roller skiing 29:30 [2] 5.02 km (5:52 / km)
ahr:113 max:131

Never quite managed to get myself registered for the 5km April roller ski challenge but thought I'd give it a go anyhow. Up in Aboyne to shop so a good opportunity for an outing on the castle drive. As ever, felt distinctly rusty and wobbly at the start and ankles were complaining like mad. Ankles soon settled down, but took most of the 5km to find any muscle memory and relax a bit! Fun though - should try and get going more regularly again.
4 PM

Running 16:40 [2] 2.21 km (7:32 / km) +70m 6:30 / km
ahr:150 max:180

A wee foot test from the house. Tweaking under the arch at the start, but settled after 5' or so and only 2/10 discomfort thereafter. No apparent after effects. Walking around I can feel both heels a bit, but it's the right one that's actually more tender now... need to try and nip that in the bud before it develops into anything more.

Road cycling 48:00 [2] 14.3 km (3:21 / km) +65m 3:17 / km
ahr:130 max:149

Out by A93 to Boddomend, cruise back between reps and home on the DW

Road cycling intervals 15:00 [4] 6.5 km (2:18 / km) +190m 2:01 / km

15x~1’ reps on the start of the climb from Boddomend. Aim was to try and get the HR up a bit as it seems to be the main missing factor with regular cycling for me. Moderately successful although I think I need a slightly longer rep to maximise it. Too much further / climb and it would turn into leg strength too much.

12 PM

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 3.51 km (12:49 / km) +55m 11:53 / km
ahr:109 max:144

Wandering round Dess woods drawing a squirrel. Could feel foot niggling a little walking in the rough terrain, but I think on balance it was probably quite good to work it gently. Squirrel turned out not too bad, although I went a bit off-line with its feet again. Think the boundary of the felled bit is wrong as I seem to keep going off line there (well that's my excuse!).

Running 6:37 [2] 0.92 km (7:12 / km) +15m 6:40 / km
ahr:119 max:130

Jog / walk back to the house testing the foot just a touch more at the end.
Can feel it a little more afterwards, but nothing too much.

9 AM

Road cycling 4:10:00 [3] 86.64 km (2:53 / km) +983m 2:44 / km
ahr:114 max:144

Little Lecht loop clockwise. Been on my bucket list for a while and seemed as good a time to do it as any with the empty roads. And they were - only saw 2 vehicles between Ballater and Strathdon! Into a headwind going up the glen and feeling pretty parky too, but the sun came out a bit heading up Glen Gairn and it felt a lot more pleasant. Stopped a couple of times on the climb for photos, but otherwise managed ok, even with my limited gears - hopefully will be a whole load easier next time on new wheels :-) Nice and easy heading back downhill with a tail-wind and the climb back over from Bouties was a whizz. Grand wee adventure.

11 AM

Road cycling 2:00:00 [3] 42.33 km (2:50 / km) +343m 2:43 / km
ahr:112 max:141

Out to GT and over the top to Dinnet (not a great descent for the roadie), lap of the lochs and then back by the A93. Stopped in Aboyne for an ice-cream and some essential snacks. Another cracking day. Meant to be an easy one, but it's hard to resist going a bit further on days like this.
Plenty of time working in the garden too.

11 AM

Road cycling 1:58:00 [3] 41.26 km (2:52 / km) +463m 2:42 / km
ahr:116 max:143

Loop over to Feughside and Glen Dye. Back by Shooting Greens. Nice chat with R+T in passing. Another stunning day.

Foot feeling a lot better this morning. Managed to get an overnight Strassburg sock which I recall BP used to swear by. Wasn’t completely comfortable but it sure as heck had made a difference by this morning!
4 PM

Note

Wee trip down to the river for a swim late afternoon.

11 AM

Road cycling 2:45:00 [3] 60.82 km (2:43 / km) +682m 2:34 / km
ahr:119 max:151 (injured)

With J. Over to Muir of Fowlis and then west towards Towie. The day was too nice and it seemed a shame to turn back, so continued all the way to Bouties. Then back over by Tillypronie, Migvie, Tarland and home. Steady effort. Hills didn't seem too horrendous and got a bit of a tow behind J on the way back from Tarland. Lovely spin.
Foot less tender today - able to put some weight through the heel. It felt ok on the bike.

4 PM

Road cycling 1:20:00 [3] 26.31 km (3:02 / km) +468m 2:48 / km
ahr:117 max:145 (injured)

With J. Pitmurchie, Tar Rd, Learney and back over the top road to Kinker. Fab afternoon. Wasn't sure whether foot would cope with this, but it seems ok on the bike - phew. Otherwise hobbling around as I can't put full weight through the heel.
Felt a lot better for this.

Tuesday Apr 21, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 30:56 [3] 4.55 km (6:48 / km) +13m 6:42 / km
ahr:137 max:160

Meh.
Jogged out to Boddomend to do some railway intervals. Foot didn't feel too bad, but as soon as I started to run hard I could feel it. Started the second rep, but it was getting more painful so I stopped and hobbled back home. I guess that's me back on the bike for a while.
I know it's not a bad time to be injured and all that, but am still very frustrated. Need to come up with some way of motivating / challenging myself on wheels.

Monday Apr 20, 2020 #

4 PM

Mountain biking 57:02 [2] 12.39 km (4:36 / km) +178m 4:18 / km
ahr:107 max:137

Chill ride with J out to Bellwood via WHW and back by the DW, including a new-to-me bit of linking path from the old Deeside road across to Boddomend. Home via IBs and the low track through the woods - couldn't face THAT HILL again. Calfs felt tight this morning, but don't seem so bad now. Heels less tender.

Sunday Apr 19, 2020 #

Note

Left foot pretty sore after yesterday and feeling it a bit in the right one too. Back to mixing things up with the bike a bit more.
3 PM

Road cycling 43:05 [3] 17.03 km (2:32 / km) +132m 2:26 / km
ahr:112 max:128

Home to LK with E (who then carried on on his own).

OWS 5:00 [2] 0.13 km (39:04 / km) +1m 37:10 / km
ahr:108 max:191

In LK. Survived a whole 5’! Didn’t go too far out as I wasn’t sure how long I’d last. Beautiful.

Road cycling 42:22 [3] 15.35 km (2:46 / km) +124m 2:39 / km
ahr:110 max:131

Feeling pretty chilled post swim, so got pedalling quite hard. Chilly headwind too.
9 PM

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Calfs are stupidly tight despite working on them lots.

Saturday Apr 18, 2020 #

8 AM

Running 2:45:00 [3] 22.77 km (7:15 / km) +670m 6:19 / km
ahr:131 max:168

Dess Skyline a-c. Took a while to get going and had foot niggles from quite early on but blanked them out and soon started to feel better and enjoy being out. Got turned back by a farmer in a tractor when I tried to cut up onto the Corse Hill ridge, but luckily knew of another line just further along the road where I snuck up unnoticed. All went well until somewhere near Mortlich when I started getting a whole new pain between my toes - think this and the subsequent knee complaint were both due to running awkwardly with my foot. Bit of a hobble back along the DW, but knew it wasn’t far. Had been anticipating some issues on a run of this length, but been holding off for long enough.
Beautiful day and the views to the bigger hills looking so enticing again.

Friday Apr 17, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 41:56 [2] 4.65 km (9:01 / km) +139m 7:51 / km
ahr:120 max:167

Beta testing latest MapRunF version for PE using a QuickStart Event in Dess. Some nice new additions which will make it a lot more usable for individuals to set up their own courses. Worked ok, subject to the limitations of gps at the bottom of the steep slope.

Barefoot running 10:12 [2] 1.33 km (7:41 / km)
ahr:156 max:171

Round and round the garden

10 AM

Road cycling 23:27 [3] 8.11 km (2:53 / km) +69m 2:46 / km

Home to Queens Loch

Running 1:37:00 [3] 12.84 km (7:33 / km) +388m 6:34 / km
ahr:129 max:179

Carnferg. Up the Fungle, round to the back side, then returning through terrain / small paths to the Guard. Not feeling great running and not as inspired or excited as I had anticipated, but started to enjoy it more as it went on. Tired by the end of the run.

Road cycling 28:03 [2] 8.13 km (3:27 / km) +87m 3:16 / km
ahr:109 max:128

Then a grovel back home on the bike
9 PM

4 PM

Running 32:00 [3] 3.55 km (9:01 / km) +46m 8:28 / km
ahr:129 max:174

Headed up to Crathie on an essential shopping trip to get bread flour from the Bakehouse. Took advantage of being there to run a wee MapRun course rounds the woods. Had set it up at the end of the COPE project but nobody has ever tested it out (me included!). Anyway, worked fine and was a very pleasant wee run, although I didn't have much in my legs.
Lochnagar was looking stunning....

Tuesday Apr 14, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 37:00 [3] 5.2 km (7:07 / km) +68m 6:41 / km
ahr:143 max:177

Jog out the DW to Boddomend to start of intervals then back again at the end.

Running intervals 28:00 [5] 4.4 km (6:22 / km)

4 x >1km reps out and back on the railway starting from B'end, off a 7' cycle. Going for it 100%. Haven't done a session like this in a good long while, but foot held up ok. Thought about a 5th rep to round the session off, but had nothing left.

Barefoot running 5:00 [2] 0.7 km (7:09 / km)

A few barefoot laps of the garden to finish.
7 PM

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Monday Apr 13, 2020 #

12 PM

Road cycling 1:10:23 [3] 24.63 km (2:51 / km) +252m 2:43 / km
ahr:115 max:142

S Deeside loop. Up to Aboyne then round Birsemore back road, over to Ballogie and back to Potties. Quiet A93 on the north side. Plan was for easy recovery but pushed some of it a touch.
Hoping to build a bit more structure into training again. Fingers crossed foot seems a lot better.

Sunday Apr 12, 2020 #

2 PM

Running 20:00 [3] 2.8 km (7:09 / km) +80m 6:15 / km
ahr:156 max:181

Short lap of the woods as w-u

Running intervals 18:00 [4] 2.3 km (7:50 / km)

10 x ~1' flat reps with slightly shorter recovery. Felt good to get myself running a bit faster / working a bit harder. Foot no worse for it.

Barefoot running 5:00 [2] 0.9 km (5:33 / km) +30m 4:46 / km

5 x laps of the garden barefoot. Had forgotten how nice this felt and didn't notice heel. Contrary to what you might expect I think this could actually be quite good for it (as long as only a short session on grass) - will try and build in as a bit of a warm down.
8 PM

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Been working on foot / calf regularly but first full stretch in a while.

Saturday Apr 11, 2020 #

11 AM

Running 1:53:00 [3] 16.01 km (7:03 / km) +368m 6:20 / km
ahr:129 max:171

Home to Mortlich then along the ridge to north before dropping into Coull to the west and back round to golf course and loch. Tried to focus on running today rather than taking selfies and wildlife watching. Felt tired at the start but managed to run all the way up Mortlich, kind of. Heel a bit sore, but also niggle in the knee and hotspot on sole of left foot. Have had that quite a lot on longer runs and starting to wonder if it’s linked with heel issue. Shouldn’t be worn out shoes as they’re pretty new.
Generally happy with this tho.

Friday Apr 10, 2020 #

11 AM

Road cycling 39:55 [3] 15.2 km (2:38 / km) +101m 2:33 / km
ahr:115 max:138

To Dinnet via the SDRd with E

Running 52:00 [2] 8.25 km (6:18 / km) +11m 6:16 / km
ahr:121 max:151

A-c round LK. Been missing this. So peaceful apart from all the geese, ducks etc. Lots of stops and when I got round to our fav swim spot I couldn’t resist a quick dip - faaab. Didn’t see another soul the whole way round.

Road cycling 38:05 [3] 13.97 km (2:44 / km) +104m 2:38 / km
ahr:119 max:151

And home again by the A93 with a brief diversion to pick up forgotten humous. So nice to ride this road without constant fear of death.
Tired by the end.

Thursday Apr 9, 2020 #

11 AM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 9.11 km (7:02 / km) +182m 6:23 / km
ahr:128 max:168

Took advantage of J heading to Banchory for a shopping trip to do a one way run. From home across to Kinker Castle then up onto Ord Fundlie. Along the ridge then dropped to the water reservoir and onto the road to meet J and E on the edge of Sluie. Bit of a grey day. Feeling ok , aware of foot just a bit and left knee niggling a touch too.

Wednesday Apr 8, 2020 #

11 AM

Road cycling 2:15:00 [3] 43.29 km (3:07 / km) +597m 2:55 / km
ahr:117 max:149

North to Tar Rd via P’murchie then continued N via Tolmauds to Millbank and the Alford Rd. West to Tough and then a new lovely wee back road over to Craigievar. Back by Crossroads. Nice ride. First climbs felt relatively easy, probably helped by a bit of a southerly, but later ones didn’t seem too bad either.
Tired after. No heel pain.

Tuesday Apr 7, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 1:10:00 [3] 10.17 km (6:53 / km) +133m 6:28 / km
ahr:121 max:162

East down the DW and across A93 at big bend to the river. Along the river to big hoose then across to corner of WHW road. Decided to explore the block of forest between there and the road which I'd never run through before. Quite nice, but very featureless. Back from corner of woodland on the A93 and up through the fields.
Lots of wildlife out there, butterflies, goosander and dippers on the river, red kite. Felt ok but was dawdling a bit too much. First time it's really felt warm.

Monday Apr 6, 2020 #

Note
(rest day)

Wee walk down to the river late afternoon and first dip of the season. River was actually quite high, but managed to find a slower spot for a splash. Generally feeling a bit tired and foot is still niggling so seemed like a good time for a day off.

Sunday Apr 5, 2020 #

3 PM

Mountain biking 1:02:00 [3] 13.53 km (4:35 / km) +242m 4:12 / km
ahr:114 max:138

Another busy day in the garden and feeling quite tired, so wasn't sure how far I'd get. Out by the DW to P'murchie Rd, then took the track over to N Footie from the big bend in the road. Round by the road to S Footie, and back up the track from there to P'murchie House. Home through the woods. Hadn't been this way for years and had forgotten how pleasant it was. Fair number of folk out walking and met some very friendly sheep on the way back. This was enough.

Saturday Apr 4, 2020 #

Running 45:00 [3] 7.02 km (6:24 / km) +157m 5:46 / km
ahr:133 max:171

Bullivard and cow shit alley with E after a day in the garden. Polytunnel now covered :-)

11 AM

Road cycling 2:30:00 [3] 52.5 km (2:51 / km) +526m 2:43 / km
ahr:114 max:159

Felt the need to see a bit more of Deeside beyond running distance.
Aboyne + SD to Dinnet, c-w round LK past BoV and then a pitta stop at LD. Tar, QV and east on the Tar Rd. Back down kirk brae to Lumph and home. Moving fairly well, but made several stops to soak up the views.
Felt quite tired after.

Thursday Apr 2, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 2:20:00 [2] 17.2 km (8:08 / km) +177m 7:45 / km
ahr:126 max:176

Planned to bike today but didn’t fancy the icy northwesterly hoolie. Followed the river bank all the way up to Aboyne without seeing another soul. Popped into the coop for some more bargain rasps and carrot seed from Strachans. Then home by the golf course, up to the old steading below Mortlich and back down to the DW. Lovely and sunny but cold in the wind. Felt rubbish running and foot a bit sore again, but wasn’t in any rush, so had a few stops and generally chilled out. Had a bit of a brief dizzy wobble on the way back (well past lunchtime) but a few sweets seemed to help.

Wednesday Apr 1, 2020 #

12 PM

Running 22:33 [3] 3.02 km (7:28 / km) +81m 6:35 / km
ahr:113 max:145

Short lap of the woods

Orienteering 40:00 [2] 3.3 km (12:07 / km) +117m 10:18 / km
ahr:112 max:153

Followed by my first attempt at Strava art with a capercaillie. It was actually really fun and a great technical exercise which forced me to keep map contact the whole way. Actually went off line a few times but managed to smooth it back in not too badly. Couldn't do much about the over-sized beak though! Best orienteering fun in ages.
A month ago I would have thought this was really sad.
