Easy touristing trot round Ålesund. Think I might have a new fave Norwegian town :-) Short steep climb from the bypark up onto the central ridge and then through lovely woodland with some cracking views - including the snowy peaks of Sunnmøre across the fjord. Back along the north side trail above the working harbour area. Treated myself after to some rather fine fish & chips consumed in the sun by the waterside. What’s not to love :-))
Hip niggly but hoping an easy run will help loosen it off a bit. Feet also feeling rather ‘locked’ ….. bit more work required in between the fun!

Morgens ski - sneaking one in before lunchtime train & taking advantage of a lift from J to the bottom of the downhill ski area in Dombås. Was quite a nice morning down in the town but it clagged in higher up & was blowing a bitter wind. Climbed up the path almost to top of the lifts then traversed over to continue up onto the ridge beyond. But the snow was scoured & icy & visibility poor, so turned back before the first top. Good descent down the ski run though (shhhh!). First day I’ve felt really weary heading up the hill, so best to keep it short in any case.

Stopped off just north of Dombås to give the mountain skis a wee warm up run. Headed up the slopes towards Fortinnakollen on very easy angled slopes - almost too easy for these skis & would certainly have been doable on the fjell skis! Nice cover of fresh snow on very firm old pack. Very tempting to carry further on up the ridge to the higher tops, but this wasn’t meant to be a big outing & J was going to be waiting on me. Summit in 85’ then a very mellow ski back down in sub 30’. That’ll do nicely :-)

Wanderings out of the back of the campsite following some skidoo / ski trails up the side valley along the riverside. Chill pace with a stop for varm sjokolade & skilling boller sat on a rock, & exchanged a few words in Norwegian with an ageing skier- it helps when they don’t speak English! Thought the tracks might loop back round above the river so kept going until I realised they were heading way out into the fjells so returned the same way at a speedier pace… rather further than planned but such a lovely morning :-)

Up Kakellkletten with J. Initially on well compacted snow / cleared forest road, but got rather harder work as the snow got softer & deeper further up the hill. Beautiful forest & a great outlook from the top so worth the effort. Back / hip not appreciating the jolts & twisting- need to keep working on it if I want to enjoy the next 10 days!

D6 Grimsbu - beyond Folldal to retrieve the car. Early start to get D to Hjerkinn in time for his train. Ski tracks all the way along the valley (though still with a fair climb) behind Folldal & past the old mine. Snowing when we set off & track conditions were much improved by a couple of cms of the fluffy stuff. Chill pace & enjoying the ski though legs felt pretty shafted when we took the skis off to walk the last few hundred metres back to the car!
God tur. All worked to plan & lucked out in many ways with weather & ski conditions, even if it was by no means perfect!
Best day - 2 on our somewhat adventurous route.
Nicest hut - Bjørnholia.
Most fun descent - D4 down into the valley.

Stretching 10:00 [1]
Hips feeling much improved already after a couple of less physical days

Incapable of sitting still for too long so went for a wee wander from the hut at Grimsbu. Picked up some nice skidoo tracks over the river and up into the lovely skog. Snow melted in places under the trees to reveal some colour! :-) Legs tired but good to keep them gently moving.

D5 Breisjøseter to Grimsbu. Cloudy & snowing lightly when we set off, but cleared out nicely later. V easy ski along the valley bottom across marshes & lakes with a lovely tailwind which allowed me to double pole much of it. Good to use the arms more than the legs, especially as I’ve done something to my right hip which is being exacerbated (caused?) by too much diagonal striding & snow plough movement . Largely downhill route today & the start of the descent was very enjoyable, but less fun lower down trying to control speed on a narrow rutted skidoo track. Thankfully managed to avoid any wipeouts though .
Back to the hytte at Grimsbu - just the car to retrieve from along the valley tomorrow!
