Event: POCAR

10 AM

Orienteering 12:33:27 [3] 31.34 mi (24:02 / mi) +4667ft 21:04 / mi
shoes: Altra LP 3.0 Red

Placeholder. POCAR with Dusty, Chris, Glen at Yellowwood State Forest. 2nd time here, this time minus snow plus rain. Went into it with the goal of a good Jan training wknd. Had a sweet TA setup with our huge Oz tent with a table and heater inside. Made us burn a bit of TA time, but it sure was nice. Started in thin Columbia top and Marmot Gtex jacket, thin 2XU tights, rain pants, buff, Gore gloves.

Glen navved with me for Leg 1, and I felt really connected with the map all day and confident enough to speak up about the nav if we were straying when I didn't have a map in hand later that night. Leg 1 was pretty clean. Spent a few pointless minutes searching for the nonexistent Fire/Water then decided they must have plotted it wrong at a spot further south on the road at a place with similar features. Voila. For awhile, we were with the 2nd place team but couldn't figure out how they kept getting in front of us when they weren't running. Then we watched them drop half their team at the top of a ~300m drop down to a CP and send 2 to rabbit it.

Back to HQ for Leg 2. It had stopped rainingSwitched to a thicker Nike polypro and thinner Marmot rain jacket. Also swapped for dry hands and feet. L knee was starting to get really tight from the relatively short amount of running we had done during the day and would get progressively stiffer as the night went on. Made for a sweet peg leg. Not much running after that. We opted to go CCW for this loop. Slight bobble on 4...entered a reentrant too early and took the ridge around to it. Travel in the creeks was slow going, so instead of an out and back, we only had to go through it once. On to the lovely S5. Good attack from the E right up to it. Searched all along the ridge and down the spur some but no dice. The clue was "end of ridge S side". To us, that reads up high on a ridge not down a spur. Knowing I was in the right place and also POCAR's history of missing CPs, we called it after 30min and moved on, only to find the next CP (clue "deer stand") definitely missing. The next point was F/W where we spoke to volunteers. They confirmed deer stand was missing but weren't sure about the other. Here, we got coords for the first of 4 progressive CPs. Find the first one and it gives coords for the next. They could be gotten at any time before the finish. We would travel right past the first one, so good deal. The next 2 were also along our Leg 2 route, but the final (R7) was about 3k out of our way when we were within a K of HQ. We opted to save it for Leg 3, since it was in the part of the map with few CPs, and if we weren't going that way, still had easy access from a trail that connected the E and W main roads.

Unfortunately we didn't have to worry about getting R7 because the RD would not let us continue on the course unless we went back for S5, which was an 8k roundtrip from HQ. She admitted it was misplaced, but since all points are mandatory and it existed in the woods, we must find it. She told us it was on top of the ridge to the N...Emily said it was further S down the spur. I'm gonna trust Emily for sure. We tried to continue on unofficially, but they would not allow it. So we had a little powwow in our cozy tent and decided we had seen enough of Yellowwood for one race. As always, POCAR lived up to its reputation of being a great winter training with not so great organization.

Track includes plotting time for Leg2 but not Leg1. Switched over to the 2nd tracker pod around midnight.
