Around the neighborhood while it was above 70F(!) before the showers started in earnest. It was just spitting when I started; by the time I stopped, my shirt had spots on it. Stayed close to home in case I needed to make a run for it. ;-)

DVOA Core Creek Green course, set by Bob Burg, supposedly 5 km on a 1:7500 map (and 120m climb?? Where?). Contour interval on map may be wrong as well. Thanks to Bob Fink for meet directing/handling starts.

Temp was about 42 when we got up this morning, 47 when we left, and close to 60 when we arrived at the park. Car temp read 70 when we left; it was mostly in the 60s and felt cooler when the sun wasn't out, warmer when it was. A bit of showers at the time we started but that stopped.

We got to the start shortly before Julie; Glen went first on Red (same first control as Green) and Julie started several minutes behind me. I saw her behind me several times, making me keep pushing and jogging as much as my body would allow (left ankle, even braced, complained; as did my right knee, so I'd walk almost as much as I jogged, or more) to stay ahead. Even though I finished first her total time was about two minutes faster. Good exercise for us both to keep pushing.

Control points were pretty straightforward given the number of trails and flatness of the terrain, so it was just a matter of keeping track of where one was on the trail system. No errors to speak of, though I stopped or slowed down a few times. Between 10 and 11 a couple of girls just off the trail near a stream crossing asked where we were, and I pointed out on the map the stream I'd just crossed. Between 13 and 14 I needed to find a side trail and hesitated short of the right one but kept moving. Sergei R had run by me on this trail and I next saw him on the trail to the S heading back east towards me; I think he missed it.

A bunch of us, after we finished, decided the map was really 1:10000 (mapper error?), making the course closer to 6.6 km, making me feel better about my time as there was very little climb in this flat area. The Green course stayed south and east of the lake (Lake Luxembourg, per the map) and didn't head up into the area we'd used previously when the map was newly redone, though apparently Red and Blue did; they were near the feral cat area.

The dotted circles for clearings (I had 4) barely showed up on my control descriptions. One of them wasn't actually a clearing but a veg corner (mapped as white, next to some green woods) and was an unnecessary control.

Up the hill, down the hill, and around the community.

Upper 40s with a breeze from the south. We're supposed to get rain overnight/tomorrow morning, with temps near 70!

Walked with Glen to the park and back, plus a short loop in the neighborhood. 41F, but a good steady breeze made it feel a lot colder.

We aren't in Arizona anymore.

We (I) wanted an easier hike today, so we hiked to the top of Sugarloaf. We'd intended to park at the trailhead closest to it but it was full, so we parked at the next closest which entailed a mile long relatively flat walk on the Andante Trail, to the trail to the summit. Started off on the wrong trail but turned around once we hit an incorrect trail junction. Finished the Sugarloaf Loop on the way back.

Another beautiful day with temps in the low 70s so I went with short sleeves (and took a windbreaker in case it was cold up top, but it wasn't really). Nice 360° views and the trail to the summit was gentle enough for my tired legs and joints.

A plus is that we had a good look at the Andante and Teacup trails as possible mtb trails ... for next time.

11 AM

Note

Forgot to note...we saw two quails on the Andante trail once we found it after having gone the wrong way from the parking lot. We were rewarded for having made a wrong turn. :-D

Also saw a Mexican jay on the way back from Sugarloaf. And a few small birds, but were unable to identify or photograph them.

5 PM

Note

We found a good brewery with a great hazy ipa and a dark ipa in Happy Valley north of Phoenix, called Front Pourch. We visited both on the way to, and on the way back from Sedona. ;-)

The hazy ipa's name caught my eye first, and the taste was satisfying: Sneaky Little Hoppitses....
