Unfortunately, I had a sad AOWN on the way to the Y...just over the hill, less than a quarter mile from the house, I ran into what I believe was a female pheasant or partridge. I swerved slightly, away from her, but she came out in front of me anyway. I saw a swirl of feathers in my rear-view mirror.
So when I came upon a turtle in the other lane a 1/4 mile later, I pulled the car over and coaxed him across (towards the pond). I think it was a painted turtle, about 5" long. One down, one up.
