orienteering race 55:00 [4] ***
12c

US relay champs. The team was Fritz, Peggy, me and than Mook.

My leg was a roughly 5.7 km green course.

I navigated ok and ran ok -- not great but not terrible. I made a dumb route choice early on (dropping a minute or so) and then had a few hestitations. The hesitations came in the part of the map that was 100 percent yellow on the map. I had a hard time reading the contours (bad eyes?).

I felt like I was fighting the altitude. At the night O' I felt like I wasn't fighting the altitude. Fighting the altitude isn't good -- it takes my mind away from what I need to be doing.

OK ended up 5th eligible 4-point team.

Note

I spent about 45 minutes doing a map walk.

Night O' champs (M40) in Colorado. Because of the altitude and because the relay would start just 12 hours from my night O' start, I wanted to take it a bit easy. I did, keeping my h.r. under 160 for the most part.

The course was a bit tricky, but the terrain was open and visibility was good (making it easier than it looked when I first turned over the map). I navigated well and ran well (though didn't push).

Night O' when it isn't cold feels strange.

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging around at PNS. Hot (mid 90s) and humid today -- real Japan-like weather.

running 10:00 [4]

3 x 3:20 at an honest effort (avg h.r. around 160, 164, 164) on the flat area at PNS. I averaged 11 LAM/min.

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging around on the trails at Weston Bend. I ran three downhill sprints (I have a theory about the benefits of downhill sprinting). I climbed 700 feet.

To get back to the car I ran ten minutes at an honest effort. It felt better than I'd expected.
