Our XC coach used to have us run repeats up and down a grassy hill. Going up, it was important to push all the way over the top. Going down, we were to let our legs loosen and open up while using arms for balance. There was definately technique to it. I also have seen others on downhill legs of O' courses do remarkably well--Peter Gagarin and Daniel Schaublin are good examples.

My theory is that sprinting down a trail helps prepare you for running in the terrain. In KC, I can't feasibly run in the terrain during the summer. But, I can find single track trails to run down. I'm not sure if it works, but it might.

I think a lot of single track trails are sufficiently twisted to stimulate the need for concentration and foot coordination. I also find that the stronger my legs are, the easier it is for me to run downhill. I manage to control it better when strong. I don't quite see the benefit of running downhill translating to running better on flat terrain but one should do whatever works.
