So - I'm coming to understand the comments I've heard through the years from cyclists... I'd say that in my (now limited) experience, most drivers seem quite considerate.
The hazard that I seem worried about is getting too close to a curb and dropping a pedal down to it - I don't think that would be pleasant at all.
The worst so far - the car that accelerated past me only to turn right in front of me. sheesh. Most aggressive braking I've done. (and no actual incident)
Finally felt comfortable enough to pedal down Browncroft the last time through the creek valley;-)
I'd guess that by now serious cyclists have a litany of experiences to talk about.
I am not a biker but I heard bikers have saying "it's not about 'if' but it's about 'when' you are going to fall"
I used to ride with a MTB group, where everyone (except me) had broken some bone while riding. I don't ride with that group anymore
Auto traffic - that's one thing. Riding down trails that could be used for running - that's another thing all together;-)
BTW - Pennsylvania just passed a law making it illegal to turn right in front of a bicycle, and making sure cars give at least 4 feet space while passing.
I love it when we have to legislate common sense
Actually "common sense" is tricky term. There is not even common definition of the term that everybody agrees on what is common sense. However overall "common sense" things are based on ether experience or knowledge and if someone does not have knowledge and experience then that particular individual does not have any foundation to make "common sense" decisions.
Not that I am saying that turning right in front of biker is justified because someone is dumb. I think in this situation it's more about courtesy then common sense. Whenever I see biker or runner when I drive I go around them as far as I can without endangering traffic.
