Browner and I closed out 2017 with a sunny run in the snow around Silver Creek Conservation Area.

Due to the extreme cold warning, we enjoyed solitude for most of our run but we met a few other hardy people. I think it was -19C when we arrived but it was supposed to feel colder with wind chill. We were warm enough and our drinking water stayed liquid for 2 hours. My phone even kept some battery power to the end. (iPhones are such wimps.) It was a great day in the woods and a lot of fun.

Happy New Year, Attackpointers! :)

New Year's Eve snowshoe expedition (90 minutes including stops) with 'Bent, Goose and Coach LD after the Doughtys arrived with delicious Thai food. In spite of the extreme cold warning, it was a spectacular night in the silvery, snowy forest. I wore my headlamp and never needed to turn it on because of the Supermoon. We did some New Year's carolling outside Crash's place and spent a few minutes chatting with her before continuing on our way home for more food, drink and fireside conversation. The party almost lasted to midnight this year. :)

Teeny Tiny's first 1-hour ski! She is a natural, of course - even with hills and even on a chilly day.

She also fell in love with our treadmill this weekend so I'm a little worried about her. ;)

XC Skiing - Classic (Rolled, not trackset) 1:09:34 [3] 9.03 km (7.8 kph) +186m

'Bent and I checked out Hockleycrest for the first time this year. It was great to be back! It's been well-used this week so the trails were fast.

We met Dave Moule's son Peter and admired the gorgeous wooden skis he'd made. He and 'Bent took a short telemark run together after our chat.

I made a 1 km snowshoe loop from our house and went around it a few times to pack it down. At this temperature, it's not packing snow so the part that passes through our back yard is still fluffy and slow.

Then I was the Official Photographer for the Toboggan Wars with 'Bent, Timato, Mrs. Tiny and Teeny Tiny.

Although Teeny Tiny was the overall winner, Timato definitely tried the hardest.

A slew of temperature records were set in Ontario today. Kitchener had its coldest December 28 since they started keeping records 103 years ago. The Muskoka Airport record was shattered by 8 Celsius degrees! I don't know if we set a record here but it took me hours to get the house warm enough to be sure the pipes on the north wall wouldn't freeze.

It was a busy day but I didn't want to miss the brisk, sunny weather so I went for a snowshoe run around Palgrave West. The snow was so loose and fluffy that even when I ran in my own tracks, it felt like breaking trail in ankle to shin-deep snow. When I took hiking breaks, my HR stayed *way* up. Is it really only two weeks until the Snowshoe Raid? I have work to do!

Note

Boxing week update for APers. Let us know if you see good deals!

33-off.com has great prices on Atlas running snowshoes. Still time to get a new pair before the Dontgetlost Snowshoe Raid.

Suunto in Finland offers great prices and quick delivery on older model Ambits. I like the Ambit 3 Peak better than the new Spartan for my needs - longer battery life and more accurate GPS. They both have a barometric altimeter.

If anyone was thinking of going to Hardwood Hills, they are closed until further notice after a fire in one of their chalets on Christmas morning. :(

After a post-Christmas family breakfast, my brother drove Mom home while 'Bent and I stayed one more day at Blue Mountain. Our first job was to tire out the pooches, which wasn't too difficult with the deep snow on the Monterra golf course. It was super cold!

'Bent and I went to Scenic Caves for some snowshoe running since the Snowshoe Raid is coming up fast. Most of the trails were packed but we waded through deep powder on the Ironman trail. I didn't run up any steep hills and by the end, most of them looked steep. The snowshoe trails are really nice - mostly separate from the ski trails with their own unique character. Sometimes snowshoe trails at XC ski centres feel like afterthoughts. It was chilly and lots of fun. I am not in snowshoe shape.

‘Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and I went snowshoeing on Monterra golf course. We’ve had snow squalls and gusty winds over the past day so there were some places where the snow was deeper than our dogs. The first time it happened was hilarious. AdventureDog was trotting beside us when he suddenly dropped into a sand trap over his head and had to “swim” his way out. I think we finally exhausted the dogs.

Merry Christmas, Attackpoint Friends. :)
