Snowshoeing hills (Deep snow) 1:06:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon XA Pro GTX 2nd pair -

Hilly snowshoe trek through the winter wonderland that is Palgrave West. Wet snow was (and is) falling lightly, and big puffballs of snow were falling off trees because it's so warm. Our beautiful marshmallow-white forest will not last long but for now, it's incredible.

I'd forgotten how steep the hills are at the back of our western neighbours' property. This summer we'll have to get permission to set up a UTMB hill training loop right from our back door. We have three good hills on our property, and our neighbours on both sides have even better hills - and then there is the Palgrave conservation land. It will mostly be bushwhacking but it should be possible to find routes that aren't too bad.

I felt strong; that last block of training must have done some good. Oh wait! My moment of self-congratulation ended abruptly when I realized that I'd forgotten my 22 lb pack full of golf balls and books... On the bright side, I have just finished losing 6 lb of golf ball-equivalent from my body, as per one of my New Year's resolutions.

Tinnitus is still there today but much less. Google tells me that medication-induced tinnitus is almost always temporary so I'll tell the travel doc about it but they generally continue the vaccine unless the side effect is life threatening. I'm pro-vaccine; I believe that for well-tested products, the potential effects of the disease are much worse than the risk of vaccine side effects so I'm glad the problem seems to be subsiding.

Note

The Adventure Race World Series has introduced a standardized mandatory gear list. Tierra Viva has not announced that they will be adopting it for their 2013 event, btw. Phew - I know a few of us have been busily collecting the items to meet their current requirements. It may be helpful to check this against our personal packing lists though.
