Running warm up/down 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

To/from the start. fast to the start to catch Mark, slow back from the finish as plotting ideas with Joe.

Orienteering race (NGOC Mallards Pike) 1:14:39 [3] 7.81 km (9:33 / km) +260m 8:12 / km
slept:5.5 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

NGOC League at Mallards Pike. 6.5km with 220m climb blue.

Very slow to 1 as adjusting to lack of grip from snow. Had written off the run before 2 so walked up the hill. Was still going well and caught up a bit on Michael by 3 (started 2 mins ahead). Went fairly straight 4-5 which I think was best for the speed I was going - knew the platform was in the wrong place as mapped but still was very slow finding it.

Caught out a bit on 6 - the clearing extended quite a bit further south than mapped so I turned left until the clearing stopped and found myself in the dark green some way south. Lost 1 min or so.

Went straight 6-7 and hoped to count clearings. Didn't work as found a big unmapped path in the green, then once I hit clearing number three I did think the plan had backfired as only two were mapped. Found a couple of million ditches (all unmapped) that all looked plausible before everyone else on the course caught up. Eventually managed to find the control a good 200 yards from where I was looking, and without leading anybody else into it. Leaving for the path to the north seemed a very long way - GPS agrees with this - I cannot match the control location on the GPS with location on the map at all.

Big slide in the snow going to 8 and managed to cut my right elbow for a change. Followed some dubious footprints through horrible stuff to 9 then made a bit of a miss in the circle - didn't notice the gully mapped. +30s. Then in good company for the next few controls and managed to lead some big names towards the big hole at the top of the circle at 10 rather than to the control. Took the vertical route to the control... Just about holding on until just after 12.

Kept about 20s behind Joe for the rest of the course with a big loss on 15 as everybody was milling around yards from the control making us think it was elsewhere - +3mins? Not caught out by platform at 16 I knew it was high. Then slide down to the finish...

Pretty bad run. Interesting course and avoided the worst slopes, even enjoyed it. A bit taken aback by how bad the map was by 7 as I though Mallards Pike was done pretty well. Probably my worst run here for 4 years or so so need to improve.
