Walking 53:24 [1] 1.59 mi (33:35 / mi) +35m 31:26 / mi

Hammond NP, Life Tr. Slate gray, sprinkles, calm. Didn't see anyone. Looked for the old foundation but trail to it was overgrown/obscured. Cut thru picnic area in returning.

Hallinan easement/Putney Pond in Dunbarton w/ W.. Gray, still day. Rained last night. 5th or 6th time there over the years. 5 River CE. Decided to go CCW which was a first. It took me up the most interesting drive, past the No Trespassing and Private Property signs - and a game camera at the first jct. Would not have had a 'confrontation' had I gone CW. Don't know if it was there before. Turns out the property is off-limits and that the trail around the pond is just about impossible to access for a casual user. A veritable menagerie of cars and old pieces of machinery and 6 or 7 buildings, one of which is a house. Mostly old hemlock woods, open, reasonably clean, nice environment, lots of knolls, vernal pools and small marshes and, of course, Putney Pond as the highlight.

Walking 1:34:19 [2] 2.14 mi (44:09 / mi) +103m 38:24 / mi

With Beth & W - SloGo to top of Great Hill and then back on Glacial Erratic to W-H Road & back to car. She'd not seen GE and was impressed. Sun in & out. I was reminded of & mpressed with some stretches of open, hardwood forest.

Monday Apr 26, 2021 #

Note

Went to boat today and yesterday, both days to paint the bottom - finished today. Beth & W there yesterday. W's company was a distraction. Not interested in being there - no woods, no interest. Beth very helpful. Last time I'll be painting the boat bottom. Had not planned on it. Tiring days (painting overhead and under the keel lying on back etc) with 2.5 hrs RT driving time as well. I used to think I could stop at Pawtuckaway or Exeter TF on the way home but it just was too much.

Walking 43:12 [1] 0.95 mi (45:41 / mi) +2m 45:23 / mi

Afternoon walk in Nottingcook w/ W. Down to the beaver slough, now just a stream running thru. Tried to enter woods at corner but too thick with a blow down. Backtracked some and woods opened under hemlocks. Then it was open veins amidst thick white pine, dead & alive. I did not find the path I'd hoped to. Gone with the past. Couldn't find the small marshy pond either - just so much change. And not woods one would want to spend time in. Walked toward the sun but eventually could see I was paralleling the PL and not as far left as I'd thought and had hoped to be. Just barely get a passing grade for what I set out to do. Not routine anyway.

Walk-jog 15:29 [3] 0.97 mi (15:58 / mi)

Fine April morn but a bit late temp-wise. BHS track, jogged straights, walked curves. The day Chief Lougee had a retirement parade - PD cars from neighboring towns, a few fire engines and more, starting @ BHS @10.

Walk-jog 14:35 [3] 1.0 mi (14:35 / mi) +2m 14:30 / mi

Same, but more effort. Jogged curves, walked straights. Need more of this. Never imagined my having to 'crawl out of a hole', so to speak.

Orienteering 1:06:28 [1] 1.58 mi (42:04 / mi) +78m 36:28 / mi

O walk at BBSP - had a 2013 USOC green course, did part of it.
Park was full of users - many MTBers. On the first leg, about 10 passed in front of me in the woods on an un-mapped path on the map (in 2013). I've been on it in the past few months. At one point on Podunk Rd, 5 cars passed me in <30 seconds, a first. Stopped to look at the grave of an Unknown Civil War soldier. Had a chat with a gent with his three scotties.

Walking 45:00 [1] 1.5 mi (30:00 / mi)

Windy, around 5pm. Robinson's Crest with W. Met BOS Mark F & his wife & their dog Anzo w/ whom W had the best trail romp ever.

Pensive day in that 'real' work was done for good.

Walking 1:03:08 [1] 1.04 mi (1:00:42 / mi) +35m 54:57 / mi

"April 22, 2021, afternoon about 5pm

OJR (dog) final walk to look for the evasive, likely non-existent corner pipe. I measured 3 times 100’ with a 100’ string from the previous ("flamingo”) corner which is solidly marked with pipe & vertical blazes. I measured out pretty close to 300’ on the 291’ leg, as denoted on the OJR map. Thus, I was confident about where to focus my search. The 300’ ended about 35’ from the last blaze that Ken & I noted way back maybe 2016 —— and the same one when the three of us were there on April 15.

This blaze is on a large hemlock with fairly clean surrounding ground. That the boundary line was blazed to this ‘last' tree is perplexing because boundaries can’t be blazed without corners as I understand it. And, more so, this tree is blazed on opposite sides, as in continuation, to my mind anyway. There is no continuation and it is beyond the 291’ to my careful measurement.

Anyway, I looked for maybe 20’ in small area hoping for discovery of a pipe but didn’t find any. I left on the designated bearing for the next leg. When I got to the PL edge on that bearing, I looked for the next designated pipe and did not find one. There was one final “corner” designated on the map on the PL itself. I looked but did not find it. I continued on the final given bearing and ended pretty much at the known pipe & vertical blaze established corner near the dumpsters at the end of diCandra Dr.

I’d say surveyor expertise is needed.

Walking 51:34 [1] 0.76 mi (1:07:51 / mi) +8m 1:05:42 / mi

To/thru Concord-Carlisle with Beth and then on to Stow. C&C are as lovely as they are unreal. Always a trip back thru time. 39 Barnes Hill was razed, so now a field. What a surprise, slow but inexorable changes. Had a walk around Walden in mind but no dogs allowed so we did with Hapgood-Wright.

Hapgood-Wright had a lot of potential but we had to get to Stow and thus the walk was too short. Spent close to 15' talking with an older couple - and the more we talked, the more food for thought and/or coincidences uncovered.

Found the house that o-maps' daughter & son-in-law were planning to move to. He wasn’t there. Would have been fun to chat. 2 years and 2 days ago, we did the UNO BBSP meet. Steve introduced me to O at same BBSP 45+ yrs ago.

Then on to Stow, saw grandchildren for first time since last July…fun and games.

Walking 46:29 [1] 0.66 mi (1:10:46 / mi) +33m 1:01:13 / mi

Not much but not uninteresting walk along final border of OJR TF at this end.
Found blazes and two pipes. Very nice woods but as I got closer to IS 93 the vehicle racket was awful. I should have had yellow spray paint to refresh many of the blazes. Tried the other direction from the one known corner but no blazing from there. Without the other corner, the town forester can't blaze boundaries. Will have to make a final search for the missing corner - it must have been there once. The issue has been unresolved for too long a time.

PM ride with Beth - lovely country roads, farms, fields and forests. And 'once upon a times" such as this.

Thursday Apr 15, 2021 #

Other 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

OJR easement boundary walk with Eric & Ken. Gray, sprinkled at end. Last walked this with Ken in 2016, and before that a few times Nov & Dec, 2013. Found no new issues, put up boundary signs in a few places and straightened old ones as well. Still unable to find blazes for the last two sections. Ken says it was never done, missing a surveyor's corner. Distance made up, time walking was longer.

Other 30:00 [1]

with W from Robinson Rd parking, to stream & beyond a bit & back. No W on walk this morning because Beth had to return brush cutter to Taylor.

Wednesday Apr 14, 2021 #

Other (Brush cutting) 1:00:00 [3]

Rented a brush cutter and had at it with various woody plants by the pond. I had not done any such work there in 10 or more years. Truly tired out. I don't have any enthusiasm for getting the cuttings to the brush dump or in the woods further behind the house. I may pay our lawn crew to do that part of the job. Anyway, the jungle is gone for now.

Walking (Nordic walking) 2:13:53 [2] 3.91 mi (34:14 / mi) +152m 30:33 / mi

Pawtuckaway, Reservation Rd. side w/ W. Took Tower Rd. CCW, went to the fire tower. If I'd been there before, I don't recall it. Then continued around and back to the car on Reservation Rd. Saw virtually no one - one car, 1 hiker with dog. All gates are open which probably isn't the case at Bear Brook yet. I was struck how West Point-like the area is, also being April made it more so. Plenty of rock and steep sides of South, Middle and North Mts. I didn't see a lot of boulders though - in fact along Tower Rd on one stretch the lightly logged woods were wide open, clean and practically free of rock.

After I got back to the car, I drove to the boulder field trail area as well as to Round Pond, another WP reminder. Didn't see any of the boulder field area. I did see it years ago. Will go back this spring with Beth.

Walking 18:43 intensity: (9:00 @1) + (9:43 @2) 0.96 mi (19:34 / mi)

BHS track, gray, chilly day. Wanted to see what I could do for a mile/1600m with around 75% of a max walk rate. Not much faster than 18' if that.

Walk-jog 16:09 [3] 0.98 mi (16:29 / mi) +1m 16:26 / mi

Jogging on & off. Ended up jogging 100m straights, walking curves. Not OOB. A start, and a lot to go. Google gave me 400m as 1312', only 8' difference fm 440 yds. I'd thought it was greater than that.

Amazed at the nice collection of autos BHS kids have - what jalopies we had 50 yrs ago if we had cars at all. We had 440 yd tracks.

Walking 44:45 [2] 0.97 mi (46:08 / mi) +72m 37:29 / mi

Great Hill with Beth & W from north side. Somber, gray, some NE wind at top. Went up power line and across for a change of pace. Logged a number of years back, the appeal must be in the contrast with the past as well as the different route. W is content, and particularly with the bone at her feet.

Walking 58:05 [1] 1.09 mi (53:18 / mi)

Saturday eve stroll around Strawberry Bank Pierce Island, training in quotes in spades. Lots of people out on Main St. etc. Very pleasant evening. Should have gone to New Castle though where it would have been quieter. Spent the night on the boat in the shed. Was going to stop at Pawtuckaway today but was too tired by end of day.

Walking 53:00 [2] 2.0 mi (26:30 / mi)

Nottingcook with W, in part to look for a leash lost a while back when there was snow. That was a lost cause. Met 3 women walking two dogs. I was resting against a trailside boulder. They were quite surprised to encounter me, sitting there like a lame duck? So solicitation as to whether or not I was ok and with an affirmative, off they went walking and talking a mile a minute.

Walking (Nordic walking) 1:23:33 [2] 2.57 mi (32:31 / mi) +70m 29:58 / mi

With W around Kimball Pond CW. Fine April day. Wondered if we'd get across dam - quite prepared to walk back the way I came but it was ok enough. Wet feet assured but decent footing with two sticks. Saw a garter snake which was pleasing. As a youngster, I couldn't get enough of snakes.

Bear Brook O walk with W from Podunk parking. Along Bear Brook itself, then eventually crossed off-trail, up-contour to a forest track that took me toward Hayes Field, passing right by the start triangle from the 2011 Boulder dash. I was course setter but can't recall the year. Took a coke break at the intersection , then proceeded along the first road to Podunk and back.

The trail along the brook, on the edge of the map, shows detail unexpected for the periphery of such a large map, this part field checked by Alexey Zuev.

I didn't have the energy/inclination maybe? to enter the woods and adopted the different perspective of one passing by, noticing surroundings vs the usual O map absorption of 5 colors, contours, water features, roads, boulders (esp. all things black here) etc. I encountered one pathetically plasticized, tidily-knotted dog poop on a narrow path by the brook in waste-land forest. What goes on in the brain of whomever who left it for forever...

Note

I never met Clark but we occasionally carried on via A/P over the past five or so years. I went to grad school in Chicago in the 70s. I always thought that if I were passing through, we would meet at one of his favorite pubs near Lincoln Park. But time slips away. It’s not to be, and that saddens me in spite of his saying “don’t be sad”. I posted a simple, smiling poem on his log for his 76th birthday.

Goodbye for now. See you in the woods, Clark.

I spent close to 10' wondering where it was I wanted to go. Started toward HNP but passing Stoneybrook made me change my mind. Who woud have known how much "adventure" could be packed into say 1 mile of local woods. Followed Chadwick easement boundary for a while, skirted a swamp, finally following Bow Bog Brook, bailing out on Stoneybrook, where I'd left but walked home as I didn't care to go back for the car, walk into sun etc. Where the stream tumbled down some mossy granite rocks could be the prettiest stream section in town. I'd never been there. I was close to two homes on two occasions. I was chicken to cross the stream on mossy rocks at one point, walked upstream a bit, saw a bonafide bridge & used that, within 100' of the house.

Regreted bailing out on Stoneybrook. I had the idea of getting home thru Corey's backyard as I did maybe 10 yrs ago in winter and was only 2.5 houses way. I turned my back on concluding the 'adventure' of where to bail out from the stream & didn't realize I shouldn't have given up until I did realize it. Too late by then.

Walking 44:07 [2] 1.33 mi (33:11 / mi) +39m 30:24 / mi

From end of WH around the bog, what I couldn't get done last time. Went CCW & stayed along the shore on the second half which had a flat table under a hemlock canopy so progress was pretty easy. The surroundings climbed considerably away from the bog, giving way to hard forest. Not much evidence of human visitation on the second half. Maybe I saw the last vestige of an old SVT but couldn't be sure.

Orienteering 2:31:26 intensity: (2:11:26 @2) + (20:00 @3) 3.81 mi (39:45 / mi) +115m 36:20 / mi

Backside of Pawtuckaway from Reservation Rd. - years since I’d been there. Some uncertainty in finding correct parking and trail head, which was Mountain Tr. Did some 6 points from an old red course, no date on map. Did pretty good with the technical O. Was generally quite close to my previous route of which I had a vague recollection once or twice. Sorting boulders, big and little, was often difficult. Very impressive rock, including the south wall of South Mt.

Saw a couple walking on an unmapped trail- at least on my map. In the end, we met up 4 times - each time, I’d guess we'd likely not see each other again. By the 4th time, it was quite surprising. Open Topo Map shows the parallels in our route. They were on easy street. I was beating myself up in generally challenging terrain although there were a good number of low relief, generally rock-free areas. Mostly gorgeous woods.

I was reminded of how much of Pawtuckaway is not on the orienteering map. Forgot to restart watch at one point. Sat to rest twice. Needed water, snack etc. which I didn't have with me. Tired. Balanced challenged a good number of times but did not fall. Seemed pretty lonesome some of the time. It was quite the surprise when W barked at the most unexpected sighting of the two hikers on a trail that I was unaware of.

Came home mostly due west, including Deerfield Roads I’d never seen & than by Podunk. Seemed a cold day pretty much thru out with sun later.

Note

Had stopping st Pawtuckaway in mind after a Ben P visit and boat visit but the visits became prolonged and it was cold & grey. I wasn't interested in starting around 5pm or later.
