Sunday Mar 30, 2014 #

10 AM

Running 1:30:00 [2]

Ran out and up the hill with spare emit units to check that controls 114 and 116 were still intact. They were, although the fires had passed nearby. Then looped back along the hillside and down to the main track, stopping to take a few photos on the way. Went back out again 30' later when J was heading out on his course. Followed some bits of the first half of the blue and brown then cut across to watch people going through some of the later controls.
Felt fine running in the terrain - really happy about that as I thought I would be very unconfident with my foot.
3 PM

Running 30:00 [2]

Collecting controls from the southern part of the area.
Successful event - no complaints that any of us heard.

Mountain biking 1:40:00 [2]

With J and E from Dinnet along the DW to Cambus, power line track up over shoulder and down to N end of Davan, back across the Muir and a-c round Kinord, with a wee detour round the boardwalk. Great ride.

Note

So the pyros have been out again today lighting more fires in Redburnt with the flames last seen heading for controls 114 and 116. Just have to hope things have been damped down before tomorrow or you won't want to be standing still for too long ;-)

Orienteering 1:30:00 [1]

Hanging controls at Redburn for Sunday. Got there to find a planner's worst nightmare with the area having been frazzled to a crisp in the last week. Fortunately not so catastrophic for an open area, but still meant that rather a lot of tapes were missing. Presumably muir burn gone out of control, but I don't know how they can get away with destroying the environment like this. Some nice bits of mature pine still smouldering. Had to smile at a nest of fried eggs - and they do this to improve the habitat for the birds (so they can kill them of course)? And they make such a fuss about us getting access too...
Walked carefully round and managed to avoid any problems with the foot. Out for ~4:15. Expecting some fast min/km on Sunday now.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Stiff - and right leg cramping up. Must have been tensing whilst out in terrain.

Running 17:00 [3]
(injured)

Decided to test the foot out with a wee run on (mostly) smooth surfaces. Down the DW, up the road to top of the wood and back by main track. No pain running and no apparent after effects, so fingers crossed.

Mountain biking 1:00:00 [2]
(injured)

From home along to Potties by the DW, track through Sluie, then back to the village through Kinker Estate. Lovely evening, but felt like hard work on the bike and my bum was sore from last night - not enough hours in the saddle recently. Hungry again.

Mountain biking 43:00 [2]
(injured)

Foot much improved today- inflammation gone down and barely feeling it walking. Went for a really pleasant ride round Loch Kinord with E after piano. All a bit of a rush but helped my sanity no end. E was all for doing it a second time, but my stomach was rumbling. Didn't notice the foot cycling (avoided my clip-ins just in case the twisting action caused a problem) and no apparent after effects.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Surprisingly stiff - must be too much sitting around. Something to work on over the next few days.

Monday Mar 24, 2014 #

Note
(injured)

Foot still inflamed so no attempt at any exercise yet

Sunday Mar 23, 2014 #

Note
(injured)

Had been looking forward to Anagach so disappointed to have to stand at the sidelines and watch. Going to need to be patient. Hopefully will be able to cycle - maybe give it a try tomorrow.
Otherwise a great w/e with an inspiring MTS bunch.

Saturday Mar 22, 2014 #

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

Running around watching athletes in the forest during TS training - Uath Lochans. Went over foot near the end - crunched badly but seemed to ease off after.

Note

Walked around taking photos in the afternoon and foot seemed ok, but then stood too long making tea etc. and could feel it start to pound. Got quite excruciating for a while after that. Bummer.

Friday Mar 21, 2014 #

Running 2:15:00 [3]

Long run starting from Pannanich, through the forest to Glen Muick house, then on to the big diagonal track up to Craig Vallich. On to Pannanich hill, down the ridge to Inchmarnoch and back along the new track below the road. Really nice run, but a vicious bitter wind on the tops - hard to stand at times. Had forgotten how lovely the lower part of the ridge is with quite a lot of tree cover now and some great views over Deeside.
Not feeling very bouncy and got quite stiff around the lower back / core. Last 20' back along the bottom into the wind was v tough.

Running 51:00 [3]

Up Meikle Tap to the mast from the E end on the way HFW. Sluggish.

Running warm up/down 24:00 [2]

To start and back again.
Grey wagtail in the ditch alongside the DW.
6 PM

Running 20:00 [2]

Checking a couple of control sites at Redburn

Monday Mar 17, 2014 #

Running 10:00 [3]

Warm-up drills and a rather brisk lap of the woods at the end of athletics club - trying to push the lads to run a bit quicker.

Sunday Mar 16, 2014 #

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [5]

SOL 1 Devilla Short Brown. Had a great race, attacking hard and spiking pretty much everything. Biggest hesitation was probably at 4 where I hadn't read the gullies on the map (or my cd, clearly). Started 1' behind a lass from EUOC who I caught at the first control and then had trouble shaking her off until the 3rd from end. Tried not to let this distract me, or the annoying beep on the GPS watch which has somehow got set with some target pace and beeped at me every 30" or so telling me to "speed up". Maybe that's why I ran so well ;-)
Feeling better in terrain than I have for ages which is specially pleasing after a long run yesterday.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

To the start and a fair bit on the way back too.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday Mar 15, 2014 #

Running 2:06:00 [3]

Long run with Marie. From big Birse track up onto Carnferg, Brackenstake and Lamahip. Back down across Glen Cat and round by the Canadian road. Felt pretty good after the first 10 minutes or so - still not very good at 08:30 starts. Tired by the end.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Note

Good afternoon in the garden but lots to do. Tired now.

Friday Mar 14, 2014 #

Running 1:05:00 [3]

Not feeling very lively again today, so a good thing I hadn't planned a long one. From Dinnet, an extended loop round Loch Kinord, via Loch Davan and the dragonfly boardwalk.
Lots of wildlife starting to appear - 1 barnacle goose amongst the greylags in the field above the loch, goldeneye on the loch, toads and frogs crossing the path heading for the wet bits and a red kite by D+Bs on the way home.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Thursday Mar 13, 2014 #

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]

Along railway to start intervals from the gate at Boddomend, then back after.

Running intervals 20:00 [5]

Feeling generally drained, but felt I needed to try and do a bit of speedwork, so did 10 x 1'+1' on the railway. Wasn't great, but got better once I got going.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Mar 12, 2014 #

Note

Embra today. Back to "normal" tomorrow I hope.

Tuesday Mar 11, 2014 #

Note

Another long day and home late. Had planned to do some intervals, but it's not to be. Maybe a wee jog later once tea has settled.

Running 34:00 [3]

Thought I'd put my headtorch away for the season, but it was a lovely evening and a sanity run was called for. Round the woods and fields. Feeling good except for the dead weight of macaroni in the pit of my stomach.

Monday Mar 10, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

In the big smoke - up early and home late

Sunday Mar 9, 2014 #

Running 45:00 [3]

Steady round cow shit alley and bullevard with J. Feeling surprisingly sprightly.

Saturday Mar 8, 2014 #

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

Control hanging for training at Dess. 33 controls and 3.3km. Pain less, but could have been even more so if I'd thought to use the semi-permanent controls, rather than duplicating them! Out for 65'.

Friday Mar 7, 2014 #

10 AM

Running hills 28:00 [5]

4 x 4' hills on the track heading up from Boddomend towards Low Hill, jog back between reps. Felt hard and unpleasant into a strong cold headwind.

Running 56:00 [3]

Along the DW to Boddomend, extra wee loop at the end of the reps up onto the top of the hill and off the back, then back home the same way. Tired.
1 PM

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Finishing taping at Redburn. Blizzarding as I headed up there, but cleared out for most of the time, until a squall in the last half hour. Really enjoying planning this one. Out for ~2h.

Note
(rest day)

Feeling wappit this morning - worth having another rest day. Plenty of armchair O to be done over a glass of vino.

Wednesday Mar 5, 2014 #

Running 44:00 [3]

Lunchtime lap of H'head. Tired legs, but trying to keep a decent pace. No gloves = cold hands.

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Tuesday Mar 4, 2014 #

Running intervals 24:00 [5]

First DR interval session in a good long while. 8 x 2' + 1'. Went better than expected. Legs recovered quite well from the w/e.

Drills 12:00 [2]

Mix of dynamic stretches and drills

Running warm up/down 18:00 [2]

To green and back after

Orienteering race 1:22:00 [4]

Cambus brown course. Very enjoyable and felt surprisingly ok running after yesterday. Felt I was flowing well and only made a couple of small errors at 15 and a bit off line heading towards 16. Reckon the night O has helped sharpen my technique up quite a lot.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

Taping control sites at Redburn - not moving very fast. Good progress though. Out for ~1.5h

Stretching 15:00 [1]

Saturday Mar 1, 2014 #

Running 3:07:00 [3]

HMM training with Marie. From Finzean bucket mill headed up Peter's Hill, then over the back and up onto Battock. Back the same way down the track and spur of Battock then across to the col west of PH, back down the valley and along the south side of the Feugh. Lovely morning with just a wee bit of cloud hanging over the summit of Battock. Track from the spur was snow filled but lovely running until we got onto some slabbier stuff where the path was buried. Hundreds of white hare bouncing around here. Great run and good company.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Jumped out of bed to do this when I realised I'd forgotten.
