Inshriach SOL. Very tired and left ankle felt very weak. Only a few little wobbles but very slow. Not half as much fun as last night.

Tinto twin night event at Inshriach. Tricky touchy feely O. Went pretty well, just lots of little wobbles in the circle. Felt like I was moving very slowly. Loved it :-)

With J round the Finzean woods etc. Crossed the S side of the capercaille enclosure for the first time - tough going through the heather, but some great wild land. Still reckon this would make a classic classic area.

Delayed until 5pm as I was staying in town for the evening. Steady loop of H'head. Despite last night's reaction to intervals, legs felt surprisingly ok.

Ints with DR 10 x 2' + 1' on the roads. Much better turnout but a split between the roads and green - I figured the green might still be rather soggy. Good session. Reckon I was pretty much evens with Derek.

Orienteering race 1:14:00 [5]

Cambus brown course. Steady run, only a couple of wobbles tiring near the end. Didn't feel too bad running for the end of quite a heavy week, although felt like I was standing still when Spongey came past.

A bit of a peak bagging run up Clashenteple Hill and Ladylee Hill. Started from the forestry track on the wee back road behind Ben Newe. Ran along the track to below the first peak, then scrambled up through thick plantation to the edge of the forest. Out on the open the running was quite good, but a bit slippy with some snow on the ground. From the top of Clashenteple, Ladylea looked a long way through the mist, but really wasn't too far. Steep climb though. Returned by the big forestry track. Felt very rough at the start but running much better by the finish. Nippy away from the sun.

Coyles of Muick from the bridge over the Muick. Wet snow on the ground and wet overhead at the start, but soon climbed above the valley cloud and it was really atmospheric higher up with cloud swirling around Lochnagar etc. Made a real bodge of the return route and was very slow descending the slushy wet grass. Cold and wet back again down in the valley bottom.

Note

Lunch in Ballater and a very pleasant walk up Craigendarroch with J, E, R and T.

5 x 2' + 2' on the hill above DAP. Long long time since I've done this session and was barely reaching my old "lower limit", but no worse than I expected. Felt tough.

From gliding strip to Dinnet and back with J and E. Brrr - snow on Morven and starting to sleet as we finished.

DR in Aboyne. What a bunch of wimps - where were they all? All time low of me + 2 others. Reverted to the old route round the village with 10 x 2' + 1'. Good session.

From Auchallater. Up Jock's road onto the plateau, then Tolmount, Cairn of Claise and Carn an Tuirc and back to the foot of Loch Callater. Felt sluggish the whole way round, especially on the hills. Much promised sun never really materialised, but at least it was dry. Lots of braying stags in rut, mountain hair and ptarmigan. Regretted not taking a bike to cycle up to Loch Callater, as the last half hour down the track was slow and painful. Nice to be out on the tops though.

Note

2 hour walk with J and E up the Vat Burn and onto Cnoc Dubh. Pleasant day. Left most people behind at the Vat as usual.

Loch Muick with E. Round the track on the N side as far as the Glas Allt and then back again. Totally awesome day up there - made all the better by knowing it was foggy down in Deeside. Had a lovely potter and picnic with lots of photo stops and then saw a golden eagle at close quarters (30m or so) at the foot of the loch - amazing.

5 x reps from the crocodile hut to the top wall with jog recovery. First one felt rubbish but they improved a bit after that.

Otley street race. Fun. Felt better than yesterday due to lack of hills I think. Planning ahead quite well, unfortunately a bit too well at no 12 when I went straight to 14 - oops. Some tricky little bits in the centre of the old town.

Haworth street race. Fun event. Not too technical but still not clean. Slippy on wet streets, so never really hit top gear.

Street race in Thornton. More interesting than the morning. Was generally better at planning ahead. Just a few hesitations. Struggling on the hills.

With J on Dinnet Moor. Dreich day. Feeling v tired last night and this morning. Legs were alright once I got warmed up until we reached the hill over the shoulder at the far side. Intervals must have done something - hopefully beneficial.

On the green in Aboyne with DR. 2 x 2 laps of double pitch, 4 x 1 double pitch, 4 x 1 single pitch, with jog recoveries betwen. Didn't manage to take splits as watch was full. Reckon it was about 27' of effort and 20' recovery. Was cutting the recovery laps to catch up Robbie, Dan etc. Long session but good and a good turnout.

Went out to Glensaugh to see how a student was getting on with fieldwork, then went on an exploration of the Slack Burn gorge. Dropped down to the burn from the weather station, and followed it up to near its high point. Interesting spot and some notable groundwater / surface water interactions, with lots of scree / loose rock filling the valley bottom. Climbed up out of the gorge then across peat bogs to the watershed running across to the Cairn. Out for 85' or so, but walked a large part of it.

Orienteering 40:00 [5]

VHI relays Broughton. Aagh ! Crappiest relay run in a long time. Missed 5, 7, disaster at 9, and a few other wobbles. Set off too hard with some of the blokes. Never got into the map or the scale. On the way to 9 on the beach, saw people at a control in the distance - head down and ran hard to it, only to find the control for the short course. Mine was 200m further back and cost ~ 4 mins.
Bad day for Scotland.

VHI individual at Whiteford Burrows. Good run - slightly poor route to 6, small hesitation at 7 (30"), hesitation at 23 (30"). otherwise pretty clean and steady. Caught Lesley 4' at 11 and Rona at 21. Remnants of cold didn't seem to be a problem. 8' clear on W40.
Tough job for Scotland tomorrow.
