Lowlander in Harriman State Park, mid 50s to low 60s and overcast (a few light drizzly showers passed through now and then). 12.2 km, 465m climb nominal. Baileytown and Silvermine maps, with a 1km trail in between leading down to the Seven Lakes Drive road crossing.

This was my 7th Lowlander (I'm not sure when they added the option, but my first one was in 2008).

Before the start Donna asked if a couple of friends of Kseniya, who have orienteered at a few HVO events could tag along with me, and they did but didn't do any navigating (though I think they were following along). Once we were headed back downhill on Silvermine (LL 6-7) and I figured they could find their way back through the last two controls, I took off; they finished 10-15 minutes later. Only one of them had a map and epunch.

Good navigation (or people near controls) to all but three, #8 and 9, and stopped a bit short to Silvermine #2 but Wyatt and Patrick S were coming up the hill and said they had just passed a control.

But I lost a lot of time at Baileytown #8 passing too far right of the cliffs west of the control (which was also our #4), and not correcting until partway up the larger hill to the SW. And to #9, I was probably farther uphill than I thought (away from the rocky reentrant and marsh) and checked several other big boulders before relocating and finding the correct one.

Four falls, the first on the climb to #1 (king/queen of the hill leg) where I hit my left hand on a rock when I fell and bruised my little finger joint and scraped off a patch of skin. I was wearing the bike gloves I usually wear and the mesh part of the glove soaked up blood so it didn't drip down my finger. A couple other gentler falls, then I turned my left ankle a bit more than comfortable on the downhill to #12. If I hadn't had it taped I probably would have done more damage (this is the one I messed up in 2000). It's tender, but I think it'll be okay in a few days.

Lowlander finishers got donuts; Highlander finishers (within 8 hours) received dry bags with the Highlander logo. And everyone got to partake of the food Chris Osborne and Liisa Breton prepared. When we left the park around 5pm we think only Sharon Crawford still hadn't finished; Bob Bullions was overtime but all others had finished in time or dnf'ed.

Thanks to all the HVO (and WCOC) volunteers who spent the day in the chilly woods at various positions so we could play!
