Cross Training 18 [1]

Today, to celebrate Thanksgiving Eh, Katie and I went up to Barrie. We wandered around Centennial Park, got some Timmy's, picnicked in the Arboretum, and ate Thai food at Qing's Cuisine.

But the highlight of the day was an epic battle of wills at the pinnacle of competition: minigolf. This was the second chapter in our unending context; in the first, I prevailed by three strokes.

The day was suitably overcast and cool. Katie immediately showed her long minutes of preparation and mental rehearsal over the past year by taking a 2 stroke lead on the front nine. The course, at Cedar Link Golf Centre, seemed more challenging than the one near Toronto's Centennial Park, though the leaves and detritus on the course made conditions difficult. Katie and I both octuple bogey'd the par 2 hole 4, both exceeding the agreed upon 10-stroke limit. Katie was cleaner than I, with four pars and three bogeys on the front nine. My game was more erratic, with a pair of double bogeys and a triple bogey.

Front nine:
Ian:45210 (15)32423= 35
Katie:62210 (11)23323= 33

The stage was set: I had taken the measure of my opponent and found her formidable. I was resolved to dig myself out of the hole I had created through poor play with consummate focus and unyielding strength of will. The first five holes did not lend credence to this goal: Katie was perfect with five pars, while I scored an undesirable wheel with all scores of 1-5 inclusive. After we both bogeyed the 15th hole, I was down 7 strokes with three par 2s to play. (All the holes were par 2.)

But destiny was waiting for Katie at hole 16. Finishing 1 over par on the first six holes of the back 9 was a testament to her fortitude, but disaster lurks at every turn. I bogeyed the 16th, but Katie could not get the ball up the ramp and onto the green. She ate a 10 and retired, which brought us into a tie with two holes to go. This wasn't 28-3; I didn't earn this, but opportunity knocked.

Unfortunately for our heroine, Katie had another disaster on the 17th hole when she couldn't sink a series of 5- and 4- footers. I parred, while she hit a quadruple bogey. The four stroke lead was enough for me to finish the 18th hole safely with one more stroke than Katie.

Back 9:
Ian:342153324= 27 + 35= 62
Katie:2222231063= 32 + 33= 65

What can be said? I managed to prevail by the grace of fate. I take some measure of solace in the result, as my 26-over-par bested Katie's +29. It took a bit of a miracle. This is a reminder that my preparation is not adequate, and I should probably train harder. I did manage a hole in one, though the victory was tempered by an expletive right after I hit the shot because I sliced it; fortunately, it went in anyway.
