trail 35:35 [3]

Very happy to get this workout in - squeezed it in between meetings. Knees and ankle feeling okay, but feeling really, really out of shape.

orienteering 1:59:09 [3] 6.3 km (18:55 / km) +325m 15:02 / km

Medium farsta at Mt. Tom. Other than the 5 and a half minutes I gave away on the first leg (changed my mind part way to #1 and turned around and went back by the start to go around on the road - not sure why), twisting my ankle (not badly but enough to sit for a few minutes) on my way to #5 and my toe totally cramping and feeling like it was broken or something on the way to #33 the second time, I had a blast. Once I "re-started" I think I made really good route choices and other than a bit of sloppiness here and there was pretty clean. Definitely tired by the end though!

A great way to finish the weekend.

orienteering 40:43 [3] 2.46 km (16:33 / km) +105m 13:38 / km

Great course - lots of fun. Really silly route choice to 8, very hesitant to 9 as I really lost my concentration when someone talked to me halfway through the leg, and then lost confidence on the way to 10 and checked out a control that I knew was not mine. But really, really nice course and just the right length to not get super tired.

orienteering 44:29 [3] 2.46 km (18:05 / km) +130m 14:18 / km

Another fun little course. Not sure why I made #2 so hard but I lost 4 minutes and it was just off a trail stream junction. Brain not in gear I guess. Hesitated on the way to #10 for another minute loss. Mostly ignored the trails since I was having trouble seeing them on the map, the green wasn't bad at all and I wasn't moving much faster on the trails in any case.

What a great pair of courses! Absolutely loved the terrain.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

Session with the trainer. Several new exercises. Some progress but then I'm not really doing much in between sessions so can't really complain.

trail 1:06:00 [3]

TNT - Media. Same loop as last week with Dasha; ran more than last week although walked the whole last part.

Tuesday May 22, 2012 #

trail 1:05:00 [3]

TNT - extended Indian loop with Sandy. Pushed reasonably hard the first two thirds, then walked when Sandy's knee started hurting after the long downhill.

Note

Wow - totally blown away that Eva Jurenikova took the time to comment on the thread about the maps and courses at EOC.

strength & stretching 1:15:00 [3]

Finally made it back to yoga - great class. And I could actually tell the difference from the exercises the trainer has had me doing.

Friday May 18, 2012 #

trail 1:16:00 [3]

TNT - a hike through Tyler Arboretum with Dasha with a few (very few) jogging sections thrown in. Tom caught up to us on the last section.

Wednesday May 16, 2012 #

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

some arm and core work - 2 x (15 crunches on ball, 5 pushups arms together knees on ball, 15 v-sit twists, 15 regular pushups shins on ball, 15 situps passing ball between feet and hands).

Followed by some stretching.

Need to get to yoga class...

trail 1:00:48 [3]

TNT - with Sandy. A good effort on the extended Indian loop from Sandy's house.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

Strength training with the trainer.
Surprised at how quickly the time goes by.

Sunday May 13, 2012 #

trail 35:01 [3]

Short hill loop - only walked the really steep hill and the bit from the crosswalk to the fire hydrant. But tried to keep a real easy pace in the early part. Which is hard since anything beyond a walk is not easy by definition.

hiking 40:00 [3]

Walking along the beach at the NJ shore in the deep sand. Finally loosened up all the muscles in the back of my calves.

Thursday May 10, 2012 #

trail 1:13:00 [3]

TNT Media - ran/jogged/walked the trails with Sandy and Dasha. Felt good but we were taking it nice and easy and walking most uphills.

Fine dinner afterwards and fun watching Dasha watch the Sixers while Clem hid in the bathroom.

strength & stretching 5:00 [3]

5 close arm pushups; 15 v-sit swivels; 15 regular pushups.

Big fail this evening trying to do even one pull up/chin up.

Wednesday May 9, 2012 #

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

A couple of sets of pushups and core exercises. Still feeling the soreness in the top of my calves.

Tuesday May 8, 2012 #

trail 36:50 [3]

TNT - sort of. It was just going to be me and the Ahlswedes and Karl still can't run so Sandy and I just met and did the short loop early. The time isn't quite as bad as it looks as I was jogging in place at the corner for probably a minute waiting for Sandy.

Only walked the steep hill and a bit of the hill before the final meadow. Legs felt pretty good but lungs were working hard.

Note

Tops of my calves, right below the knee in the back, are really sore. Did somewhere between 80 and 100 calf raises on the steps yesterday and while they seemed really easy while I was doing them, obviously they were working some muscle or ligament that needs to be a lot stronger. I was worried that running would be a problem but didn't feel it all on the trail.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

2nd session with trainer - he used more resistance and made everything harder this week. I can do lots of pushups with arms about 2 ft apart and struggle to even do one with my arms only a foot apart. Amazing that they use different sets of muscles.

orienteering 1:37:47 [3]

Good, but physically tough, brown course. I had no interest in the really long around trail runs but I'm sure they would have saved lots of time as going straight was just really, really hard. Not navigationally hard, just hard to keep moving up and down the steep rock and through the blueberry and stuff. Navigated fine making only a few small errors (thought I was one cliff over on 2 but ran into my control instead of having to climb over one more spur as I expected, navigated cleanly to the reentrant I thought was in the center of the circle instead of to the one that actually was at 4, a little low at 5, left the trail too early at 8).

Good thing the drive home wasn't any longer - I was starting to get really sleepy there at the end!

Feel way more beat up than I did after the Billygoat.

hiking 10:00 [3]

Trek to the start.

orienteering 1:03:11 [3]

Brown course. Really fun middle course at West Point. They gave us 1:7500 map which really helped. Unfortunately, I made lots of errors which is too bad as it was a great course. Butchered #2 badly - just was never really where I thought I was and it was a really simple control - don't know why I had so much trouble. Slow on several downhills for 3-10 but spiked every one. Then lost focus on 11 and missed it - still not sure if I was too high or too low - and took forever to relocate. I thought I was reading the contours well and saw the flatter area but somehow didn't see the feature. Then was really slow to 12 picking my way through the rocks - not sure how everyone was so much faster than me there as I didn't think I mucked it up at all. Oh well. And finally on the way to 13 went into the creek up to my waist probably finding the only deep spot in the whole thing and then got all turned around looking for the final control. Phooey. But a really fun course.

hiking 15:00 [3]

Trek to the start.

Friday May 4, 2012 #

trail 38:28 [3]

A slow trek around the short trail loop with Sandy with lots of walking but enough jogging to remember what it feels like.

Thursday May 3, 2012 #

strength & stretching 10:00 [3]

A very short work out doing some of the things from the trainer session. Abs still really sore.

strength & stretching 1:00:00 [3]

So, with Mary as a role model, I investigated personal trainers. I found one that seemed reasonable and he came to the house today and he put me through a series of exercises. It was a tough workout; I will be mega sore tomorrow.

So far this morning, I have had two cats, a groundhog, a skunk and a fox traipse across my back yard while I've been working at my computer. So far they all seem to be just using it as a thruway and have not taken up residence under my shed.

hiking 55:00 [3]

TNT - hike in the Wissahickon with Sandy while Bob ran the usual loop. We were both too sore and tired to want to run.
