Cycling (Road) 1:55:00 [3]

AM: Easy tempo - borderline "2" for effort, but I was in the big ring, so I'll take credit for a 3. Out to Kirkwood, then southeast and back home via Grant's trail and Des Peres Parkway.

Cycling (Road) 50:00 [4]

PM: Took the TT bike out to Babler for a pre-race checkout and also to see if I would use it or my road bike for the race at Babler next weekend (the loop is hilly enough that it's close to a toss up). Did three loops, including one hot lap. I think the TT bike will be OK, because the hills need to be taken out of the saddle anyway.

Running (Road) 20:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood before work.

Cycling (Road) 3:13:00 [3]

Long tempo - good pace. Rode out through U City to Creve Coeur Lake and then across the Page bridge to St. Charles (first time I've ridden across the new bridge, the bike lane is nice).

Once over there I played Tour of Flanders for a while, taking the Katy trail (hard pack, but quite ridable on a road bike) into the historic district and then riding the length of the cobbles on main street (about half a mile).

Headed south on Upper Bottom Rd (what Bozo came up with that name?) and then back across the river and home through Ladue and Clayton.

Cycling (Road) 20:00 [2]

Warmup. Shorter than I would have liked, but I had to get up at 4:30 to make the drive to Columbia and didn't feel like pushing it earlier.

Running (Road) 26:14 [4] 3.9 mi (6:44 / mi)

MO Duathlon Champs. Very windy and somewhat hilly. Paced much better, even ran slightly negative splits. Finished the run in third (where were all the good runners?)

Cycling (Road) 52:05 [4] 21.0 mi (2:29 / mi)

Bike leg. More wind and hills (good for me, since it makes the bike leg longer). Passed one to move into second. Time doesn't count either transition (both were good - 25-30 seconds).

On the return trip saw one guy riding out totally head down go straight off the road into the ditch. Busted collarbone. Aero bars only make you fast if you look where you're going.

Running (Road) 8:50 [4] 1.3 mi (6:48 / mi)

Final run leg. No change in position as we were getting pretty spread out. Good thing, too, since my calves started cramping in the transition. 2nd overall, 1st M40+. Pretty happy with the result, although I should be running faster than this.

Cycling (Road) 32:00 [2]

Warmdown.

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [3]

Modest tempo using the TT bike.

Thursday Jul 22, 2004 #

Running (Track) 45:00 [3]

Easy quarters trying to dial in a pace for Sunday so I don't overcook the first mile again.

Wednesday Jul 21, 2004 #

Cycling (Trainer) 40:00 [3]

Moderate tempo while watching the L'Alpe d Huez TT. Matched my cadence to whoever was on TV. Since I wasn't shifting, that meant I worked a lot harder when Lance was on the screen. Surprisingly, Ullrich was pedalling a bit faster than Basso.

Tuesday Jul 20, 2004 #

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

Easy spinning while watching the tour. Legs are still pretty sore.

Orienteering (Park) 1:07:28 [4] 10.4 km (6:29 / km) +230m 5:50 / km
spiked:25/29c

Adventure-O at Carondolet (1:5 & USGS 1:24). Usual Carondolet score format (25 controls) with 4 more set outside the park. Navigation was fairly easy, but switching back and forth from 1:5 to 1:24 required some concentration. First place easily since David Frei wasn't there.

Orienteering (Park) 20:00 [2]

Control pickup. ST=815.

Cycling (Road) 2:12:00 [2]

For some reason I thought that bringing my bike to the meet and then doing a ride from Carondolet would be novel. I suppose it was, but I failed to consider that there are almost no good routes through south St. Louis. I managed to cobble together a ride without too much annoying stuff (lights, heavy traffic, etc.) and even got in 5 miles of good tempo on Grant's trail, but all-in-all the whole concept goes in the Really Bad Idea file.

Cycling (Road) 32:00 [2]

Warmup.

Cycling (Road) 1:46:00 [4]

Missouri Road Champs 35+. Two laps of a really good loop (something like 20 miles/lap with 2 good climbs and lots of small rolling things). Small field (30 or so), but fairly high quality. First loop was pretty mellow although there were some attacks.

The big split came on the hill at the start of the second lap. I was riding near the front and saw the break of five go, but didn't think they had enough to be dangerous. When we crested the top I looked back and realized that the main field was down to 10 riders, 5 of which (including me) had a teammate in the break. That pretty much guaranteed the success of the break.

Tried to bridge on the next climb, but the gap was too big and I got sucked back in. Finished 12th.

Cycling (Road) 1:24:00 [3]

Did another lap on my own at moderate tempo (easy on the hills). When I got back some of my younger teammates were warming up for their race, so I rode with them for a bit.

Friday Jul 16, 2004 #

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

Easy spinning on the trainer while watching the Tour.

Thursday Jul 15, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 47:00 [2]

Easy spin over to Mark Geldemeyer's house to deliver some maps for this weekend.

Wednesday Jul 14, 2004 #

Cycling (Trainer) 45:00 [4]

Alternating 3 and 1 minute efforts at 40K pace, go on 5 minutes while watching the Tour.

Tuesday Jul 13, 2004 #

Paddling (Kayak) 1:12:00 [3]

On the Meremac from Kirkwood downstream for 28 minutes and then back up with David Frei in his Kayak and the Sona Family in their canoe (Jeff & Carrie paddled while the girls shot at us with super soakers). Hottest day of the year so far, but it wasn't too bad on the water.

Sunday Jul 11, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 3:32:00 [3]

Out to Chesterfield for the Big Shark ride. Only did the first half of the team ride. Several climbs, all taken in the saddle since it was raining and I was spinning the rear wheel every time I'd stand on the wet roads. Definately time for a new rear tire.

Saturday Jul 10, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 1:02:00 [2]

Over to Maplewood for the race (about a mile) and some warmup. Then riding back after.

Cycling (Road) 42:00 [5]

Maplewood Crit (M35+). Narrow, technical loop with a small climb and very fast back section. First 10 minutes were really fast, then a group of 6 got clear and everybody else pretty much threw in the towel. I had a feeling they weren't coming back, but I didn't find the legs to join them. They had almost lapped the field by the end.

Teamed up with another Shark to try to bridge around midway, but we couldn't get across and fell back into the group after a few laps. I tried a solo move from the field on the final lap, but got caught in the last 200m. Fun race, even if I got no result to show for it.

Thursday Jul 8, 2004 #

Running (Road) 19:00 [2]

Easy jog round the hood pushing Baby-O in the jogger.

Tuesday Jul 6, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 1:01:00 [3]

Over to Carondolet and back after the races.

Cycling (Road) 51:00 [4]

Tuesday night crit #1. Smaller field than usual due to threatening weather. Made for more aggressive riding. Got in a break with 15 minutes to go that lasted for a few laps. After getting caught I sat in the field to recover. With one lap to go I found myself on the back of the GCC train and figured I'd take the free ride to the front. They made a mess of the leadout, putting their sprinter on the front way too early with me still bolted to his wheel. Despite the nice setup, I only got 4th in the field sprint and with seven off the front that amounted to a whole box of nothing.

Cycling (Road) 25:00 [5]

Tuesday night crit #2. Still no rain (which was good, since the Cat 4's ride the second race). The races were running behind schedule and I had promised Kate I'd be back by 8PM to put baby-O to bed. I figured I'd ride in a break for a while and then bail. Problem was, I was joined by a couple of hammer heads and we damn near stayed off the whole race. After getting caught with 5 minutes to go, I checked out. Made it home at 7:58 to avoid suspension of racing priviledges.

Sunday Jul 4, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 1:58:00 [3]

Riding over to Lone Elk and then back after the run.

Running (Trail) 2:20:00 [3]

Chubb trail from Lone Elk to Tyson, then back via Flint Quarry with David Frei, Jeff Sona, and Jason Coleman. Good pace going out considering the heat (1:05 to the Tyson trailhead) but then slowed as it kept getting hotter.

Note

Summer is officially here. I drank 110 ounces and still came back 5 pounds lighter.

Saturday Jul 3, 2004 #

Cycling (Road) 1:38:00 [4]

Hill repeats on Marshall Rd (2:59, 3:08, 3:06, then started feeling bad and did a 3:27). Called it quits after that and rode home at a good tempo.

Note

I haven't been able to ride as much as I'd like the past couple weeks because I've been working a lot of OT. Might still be faster, though, because I used the money to buy a Felt S25. Looking forward to checking it out in my next TT.
