Orienteering (Aus Long champs) 1:48:09 [3] 15.0 km (7:13 / km) +425m 6:19 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia (green)

Reasonable run, didn't see anyone till Craig appear a few hundred m behind at 6. No mistakes early on, which I think was a combination of the slower terrain, the scale, and karma from the earlier events.

Very slow to get over the fence+green between 4 and 5.

Took the track to 6.
Took the valley route to 8- No Jim I don't think there was an alternative.
Very slow high route to 10: Came over the top of the spur immediately south of 9. Craig and Seb caught me here.
Josh caught us at 14, but we dropped Craig.
Dropped Seb and Josh on the way to 15 (route choice challenge?)
After being inspired by Bryan, ran over the hill to 16.
Seb caught back up at 17 where we both fumbled around on the wrong knoll.
Started to slow down here.
Jogged through the paddock section.
Blair caught up at 26. Lost steam re-entering the paddocks for the final leg.

Didn't expect much from today (being a long distance), but felt I was reasonably mistake free (just the one at 17). Need to work on speed and general fitness.

Nice to see that the top 30 were all within 20 minutes. But I guess it was a fairly short course.

Would have liked to see a route choice leg though.

Orienteering race (australian relays) 1:17:01 [3] 7.7 km (10:00 / km)

Bit dissappointed.
Definately a runners course that I would have loved if I was fitter- not that I felt unfit- I was just 2min/pkm slower than Max.

Made about 5/6min of mistake on the first two; which I took easy trying to avoid the classic relay first control mistake; but my lack of confidence led me too run straight past it ala Sunday. Control 2 not much better but this time being overconfident.

Few small circle errors throughout, One poor route choice (which wouldn't have cost much time).

Then ran through the spectator control only to be baffled by the mapping in the farming paddock (perhaps no fieldwork?).
One of the controls was about 4 contours too low on the hillside and a number of large cliffs (in the middle of a paddock) weren't mapped. Also missing was the major farm track heading straight up the hill, Didn't find the powerline running across said paddock.

hmm

Otherwise felt good and was a bit upset to still be able to sprint the last two controls and not feel stuffed at the end (obviously didn't try hard enough).

Orienteering race (Oceania middle) 1:00:00 [3] *****

Very much looking forward to this run.

Feeling good coming into the event.

Ran much too fast to number 1.
Came to the right spot, but wrong side of a mound and pushed on down the hill. Wasted a few minutes before running past the control again, relocating off the long erosion wall to the west, and finally following the queue into the flag.

Had settled down by checkpoint 4 but still full of beans.

Slogged hard through the swamp but was slow coming into the circle (learning to be cautious again).

Very difficult to dechiper map into 7 so took it very easy (still stuffed it though).
In hindsight I should have just bolted to the track junction on the way to 8 and then turned around.
Lost more time on 9, too far south.

Picked up bryan at 14; he then followed me wide. Slowed down till I was through the spectator. Lost shoes in puddle on way 18 (bounced off control 9). Beat Bryan, Piotr, Evan, into 19. Fell down the hill leading out of 19 (after watching bryan do it). Followed the elephant tracks to the finish.

Wanted to feel good about my fitness and not get pushed around by the forest / mud / gorse / mining. Which I did succesfully. Now need to sort out navigation.
