Finally got back to the eye doc today, and the retina is completely attached, so things are looking good. The air bubble now covers at most 15% of my field of vision. My right vision is only 20/50, and that's with pinhole assistance, but I remain 20/15 on the left.

Most importantly, I was finally cleared to run, swim and bike, so I ran from Ellison this evening. The black flies were too awful going up to Penfield Road, so I didn't return that way after doing a bit of Corbett's Glen. I brought bug spray, but it doesn't do any good if you don't actually put it on.

Did 1,2,3,4,3,2,1,etc. jogs followed by 1 min walks to ease back in.

Went to the north end of the boardwalk, then all the way to the south end and back to 9th street. Garmin says the total length is about 2.45 miles, just shy of the advertised 2.5 miles. Started out leisurely, then picked it up a little, but not too much.

Longer and easier walk today, on a much less crowded boardwalk thanks to the rain that came thru this AM - the 9th St boardwalk entrance was flooded, so I had to climb thru a railing to stay dry. Went north on the boardwalk past the end, then when I rejoined it, I stopped for a donut at the place that had a line of over 50 people the other day, but had no line today. They dipped a donut into chocolate glaze to order - quite good, but not worth waiting in a line to experience.

I did get in over 6K steps, almost all of them from walking to dinner and then over to the boardwalk and around after dinner. Nothing during the day as I had an all-day meeting to call into - so much for the first day of vacation.

Looks like I can't get back to see the eye surgeon until 7/31, so I won't be cleared to run, swim or bike until at least that time. That ends any thoughts of doing the Rochester Triathlon on 8/25.

Had surgery for the detached retina at 6:30am. I was able to remove the patch at 1:30pm and they warned the vision might be very blurry, but it was basically non-existent. As the day went on, I was able to differentiate light and dark, but it turns out that is normal, and it can be up to a couple of weeks before things are back to a new normal.

Lousy start as I was too busy looking at the map on the way to the first (easy) control to notice that the creek wasn't looking right, so I had to skip it. That came back to bite me at the end as I went to get it, made a 25-second error and went over by 17 seconds.

I was looking at the map to decide which direction to go, so at least I made a good choice to go counter-clockwise and see how far I could get. Then on the second control, I didn't read the clue sheet and climbed needlessly to the field before realizing I had to climb back down to the control.

The next section went well enough, until after getting the one on the N tip of the pond, I foolishly tried to stay high and contour around - lost a lot of time to those that popped out to the road instead.

After skirting the property corner and passing Steve heading into a control along the eastern ridge, I didn't see a downed tree thru the ivy or whatever tangles you up and caught it, stumbled, managed to stay upright but then caught in the ivy and strained my already vulnerable butt/hamstring intersection, so I had to walk for a while. That cut down my endgame options and so I had to skip more than intended, costing me a shot at 3rd place.

Got Luke in the water, first trying out the most basic TI drill (with fins) to see if we could get him more comfortable in the water, then tried some deep water running. The deep water running didn't work out well because the lifeguard told him to wear the belt HIGHER when he wasn't staying up high enough, and so I just had him use one hand on the gutter instead.

I mostly did 100s with talking to Luke in between for long recoveries, but went fast (as fast as 1:25 free and under 1:40 back).
