ROC Meet at Abraham Lincoln Park - Green Course

Not a good race. Got to the C1 area fairly quickly, but got distracted by an unmapped trail and climbed down and up (about 4-5 contours) a few times before realizing what was going on. From below the control, it was much easier to see (from above, on the spur, it was invisible). I was not real pleased with the control location of this or C4, which had descriptions "spur, outside east side", because the spurs were quite long and the control did not seem to be visible while traversing the spur (and was does
"outside east side" mean? the flags seemed to be on the downslopes off the spurs, but not "outside" the spurs - perhaps spur, east part would have been more accurate).

Managed to find a reasonable path across the swamp when heading to C6. Perhaps there was a route to C7 with less climb, but I still don't see it. I followed the main trail north, then east to where a smaller trail left the creek up a reentrant, on the trail past C1 (boy is that easy to see), and then looked for a place to climb down and back up to C7. Then down and up to C8. C9 was easy: trail to creek to marsh - saw Patrick and Tristan picking their way, avoiding the mud, so I made a point to go full bore thru the mud, getting in and out of the area while they tiptoed around.

Heading towards C10, I took the trail east of the main trail and left near the junction S of 10. I missed the control to the right and bailed east to the trail and road, and went back in the trail to the bend and attacked. It turns out I missed the first time because the flag was one reentrant to the west, but it was in line with the bearing I was on. Rob S climbed into the control just before I got there, but I beat him down to the main trail. We leap-frogged each other on the way to C11, then we both missed C12, taking different approaches - he went in the woods early, I went 20m past the last trail junction and angled in. We both ended up going all the way to the next spur, before I climbed to within site of the parking lot, and went back down to the correct spur and continued down the spur to the flag that seemed to be too low. But this time it was placed NE of a distinctive, small spur.

I went way left to C13 (thru the field), to avoid the extra climb. Clean to C14, but then got hung up a bit trying to get to the finish.

ROC Meet at Abraham Lincoln Park - Orange Course.

Nate had to go out for a second course, so I figured I should as well. All Brown control locations were the same as Green controls, so I chose Orange, which had 6 of 14 control locations from Green, but all came with a different perspective.

Sloppy to C1, which I had already visited. C3 was a disaster: I missed to the right from the bend and didn't realize it at first. I saw the knoll from the south, but no flag, so I ran away, then came back and stood on the south side of the knoll, wondering why I didn't see a flag, then I noticed some tape on the northwest side, went around and saw the bag.

C4 was on a trail, C5 was back at the swamp, C6 was in a clearing, C7 was on a pronounced spur. C8 was easy from the trail (it was Green C1), C9 was a repeat at the top of a hill. C10 was just a pain to get to via the fence route. C11 was at the one mapped distinctive tree in the middle of a knee to waist high grass field, and I went to the wrong distinctive tree first. I tried to go straight-ish to C12, to avoid a dull trail detour, but the dark green was too thorny, so I bailed. C13 was a little tricky with the indistinct trail. C14 was the same go control, which took about the same time to get in from, but because I was tired, not because I got hung up.
