4 AM

Run - Trail long (24 Hours of Waterbury) 2:45:00 [3] 13.85 km (11:55 / km) +500m 10:06 / km
shoes: Mindbender

After Dave finished up his dark leg around 11pm we agreed to rest 'a while' and see how we felt. Out came the sleeping bags and the horizontal position ensued. Ahhhh. Didn't really sleep though - trains, highway traffic and intermittently returning 24 hour runners combined with occasional leg cramps kind of disturbed the rest.

We all got up at 4 and decided one more loop as a group and no running would bring our total cumulative lap count to 12 and push the mileage over 100. Also allowed John & Dave to notch their first ultras on a very demanding course. Mission accomplished.

We had originally figured each of us would run about 8 hours total, I actually wound up with 8:51 run time. I didn't tally final lap times, but I'm guessing since we had some 'lap overlap', that we probably ran a bit more than 24 hours in total as a group. Going in we had visions of getting more laps in and better lap times, but this course was brutal and really took it out of you.
8 AM

Note

Serena Wilcox won the 12 hour with 58 miles and Courtney ?? won the 24 hour with 82 miles and he barely spent 10 minutes in aid stations the whole time. Did I mention it was a tough course?

Run - Trail long (24 Hours of Waterbury) 1:40:00 [3] 13.85 km (7:13 / km) +500m 6:07 / km
shoes: Mindbender

Leadoff leg of 24 hour trail relay with fellow Striders John Agosto & Dave Almand, both of whom were looking to notch their first ultramarathon. Deb Livingston also there for the Striders in the 12 hour solo division.

Gorgeous day and after 1/8 mile of level, the trail turned up, seriously up. This course was brutal & unrelenting in the ups & downs department. Went out at the front with speedy 12 hour women Deb & Serena Wilcox, the eventual 12 hour winner. Figured since I was running relay style I'd push the pace since running the relay I'd have 3+ hours downtime to recover. The three of us gapped the main field on the long climb to Perry Hill, but ran through an incompletely signed turn and found ourselves on a half mile bonus. oops... By the time we got back to the turn, the RD was there adding lots more tape to make the route up the non-existent trail more obvious. I let the girls go on and moderated my pace. Tagged off to John Agosto.
1 PM

Run - Trail long (24 Hours of Waterbury) 2:05:00 [3] 13.85 km (9:02 / km) +500m 7:39 / km
shoes: Mindbender

Leg#4 (my 2nd) - walking most uphills, still tired from the first one. And partway up Perry Hill, the lyme arthritis in my pelvis really started to hurt again. Been months since that flared up. Ran w/ Penny for the last couple miles.
4 PM

Run - Trail long (24 Hours of Waterbury) 2:21:00 [3] 13.85 km (10:11 / km) +500m 8:37 / km
shoes: Mindbender

Bonus - running a leg out of sequence to pace Deb Livingston on her 5th and final lap. She was having a rough go after 3 laps so John paced her through lap 4 and I paced through lap 5.

We were the only 24 hour relay team so had 'won' simply by virtue of starting so for us the event became about getting miles in and having fun (sic). RD Josh Katzman was fine with us doing our own thing and his crew kept track of each of our legit laps, but also put a note in some laps indicating we should add time for Deb's laps as well.

Long time and all of it hard work and our running order was shot and at times we had two runners on course concurrently. When the legit runner came back in, whichever of us was there sucked it up and went out, on shorter rest than the original plan called for.

Got Deb in right at 10 hours (7pm) where she pronounced herself done. And at this point (3 laps for me) I had no inclination of going back out any time soon.

John came in a short while later having gone back out for a regular relay lap on short rest when Dave came in from his 2nd lap. He was done for a while too. After maybe 20 minutes Dave decided to get another one in to make us all even at 3 laps a piece.

Hiking (speed caching...) 45:00 [3]
shoes: NB 790 {green}

later afternoon geocaching w/ Jackson in Southwick MA. Set out to try and get all 12 of a 12 cache series before dark. Mostly driving between caches, time is rough estimate of hiking/hunting time. Each cache represented one point of the scout law. Found all 12 caches in 2h34m, the last one near a scout camp in Russell, MA by flashlight.... Where the hell is Russell, MA? I'm not quite sure as I've never been there before, and good chance I never will again - but the sign said we were in Russell, so I'll believe them...

Run - Road hills (Happy Hills) 58:31 [3] 10.8 km (5:25 / km) +220m 4:55 / km
slept:6.0 weight:75.3kg shoes: Mindbender

Happy Hills w/ Mark, Scott & Tony. I did the 'lite' version and turned around where the dirt road turned to pavement since I'm usually spit out the back of the train at the turnaround anyway. So mostly running solo.

Was nice since I managed to get an hours worth in and did 4 repeats, whereas 4 full repeats would have been 90 minutes and more than I was up for this AM.

Hiking (Mt Rushmore) 1:00:00 [0]

Woke up early (as usual) to find a couple of whitetail deer browsing in the marsh below our campsite.

P1020296.resized

Broke camp, then headed over to the visitors center for a bit, then enjoyed a scenic drive on the Needles Highway - didn't stop as most of the turnouts were full of bikers. Made our way up to Mt Rushmore (more bikers) and did a hike around the base. Then made our way east to Badlands NP late in the afternoon. Drove the scenic drive with a few stops and camped at the east end of the park.

The kids completed another Jr Ranger badge and we took in a really neat astronomy program in the evening, though Jackson faded early so he and I went back to camp before the the real stargazing began (dark moonless night and a number of large reflector telescopes on hand).

Hiking (Bradley / Taggart Lakes) 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Up early and drove to Bradley/Taggart Lake Trailhead. Ate a classy breakfast on the sidewalk as there were no picnic tables (or shade).

P1020044.resized

Attempted a ccw loop heading to Bradley Lake first, but was thwarted by a recalcitrant bear munching on the trail and refusing to budge (over 25 minutes). Heard he bluff charged another group of hikers so we opted to backtrack and do an out/back to Taggart Lake. Had a good long break at Taggart.

Hiking 30:00 [0]

Long driving day from RMNP to GTNP - managed to get through 5of6 of the LotR Extended DVD's. Drove right through the realm of the Swampfox - looks like mighty fine O terrain - one of these days I'll get a chance to run there.

Over Togowotee Pass and into Jackson Hole to find all but one campground full - quick U turn and down to Gros Ventre where we secured a site - not a great campsite, but we decided to spend our days around the park and just come back to Gros Ventre to sleep. Even had picnic breakfasts and such away from the campground.

Hiking (Bear Lake) 2:00:00 [0]

Rather than deal with traffic, we took the free hiker shuttle from the campground up to Bear Lake Trail head. Did a nice hike around the lake and then took another trail down to Alberta Falls and came out at a trailhead further down where we picked up the hiker shuttle back to camp. Can't do that very easily parking at one spot - me like the shuttle.

P1010970.resized

Saw a couple coyotes at very close range from the hiker shuttle back to camp. Saw a nice herd of Elk in the park, then made a fire and had dinner. Then the boys and I went to a ranger talk on Weasel's where they finished up their first Junior Ranger badge of the trip.

Hiking (Cub Lake) 1:30:00 [0]

Lazy morning packing up in Estes Park, drove a few miles to RMNP and a nice campsite at Moraine Park. Went for a soggy hike on the Cub Lake Trail, saw some deer and a marmot. Hayden getting cold, so we turned around before getting to Cub Lake.
