orienteering 59:04 [3] 5.6 km (10:33 / km) +574ft 9:07 / km
weight:133.5lbs shoes: new Integrators

NEOC A meet at Wells SP in Sturbridge. I ran at Wells a bunch of times in the late 70s on a black and white map, and then for an A meet on a color map in 1985, but not since then. I had memories of some crappy woods (mainly mountain laurel) but also some nice forest, and my kilometer times back in '85 were about 7:30. What surprised me today was that we used some new terrain to the NE of the old map (controls 1-11) and just 10-20% of the terrain on the old map. If the whole area was remapped, then a lot of it wasn't used. One thing that was consistent between today's map and the old ones was the imagination that went into it, particularly with relation to the green, which seemed more a reflection of the color of trees than the runnability. Just so you don't think I'm picking on the mapping of the green, there was some interesting mapping of the contours and the rocks, too, and, well, not to leave them out, the man-made features and the water too. The mapping of the yellow seemed ok.

Slowly feeling better, I guess, at least I'm eating more. Had a strange combination today, feeling light on my feet (legs felt good and it was cold day), but also not much energy. So I walked up all the hills. At least I wasn't making mistakes of any consequence. If you're going slow enough, the orienteering is usually pretty easy. Routes/comments.

Thermometer said 44F, but it felt much colder. Wore an extra long-sleeve shirt and was still cold, and very cold afterwards.

12.5 km tomorrow, yummy. Will try to go for 2 in a row over Swampfox, though he's getting old and is pretty easy to beat these days. Maybe I should let him beat me tomorrow, just to give him a morale boost?
