Soccer 1:20:00 [4]

Team Practice at Meridian with the O40 A team, mixed around. Played mostly center mid/D. Cool night but warmed up quickly.

Sunday Apr 27, 2008 #

Soccer race 1:15:00 [4]
weight:204lbs

Indoor game against Inter. They happen to be younger, faster and more skilled than our team, so . . . we lost 4-2. Final tuneup before outdoor league starts Friday.

Bounced around between center D, wing D and wing midfield. Plenty of opportunity to run without twisting the ankles in the potholes at Meridian Center.

Orienteering race (Sprint Course) 24:22 [5] 2.6 km (9:22 / km)
weight:204lbs

Sprint course at Oatka Creek Park. Very fun course, ran a bit tentatively but was happy with the time. Slow on the longer legs (9-10, 3-4 and to a lesser extent 10-11). Tried running along fences a bit too much, when a little longer rout on a trail would have been faster.

Orienteering race (Green Course) 1:20:00 [3]
weight:204lbs

Ran the Red/Green/etc. course at Oatka. Intended on Red, but had to get home early so cut it short after 20 controls. Not specifically trying for speed, rather visiting far corners of the park, and specifically ignored four controls relatively close to the start.

Not a bad way to see the park! Oatka creek looked very inviting, almost wanted to wade across to get #27.

Soccer 1:45:00 [4]
weight:201lbs

The weight will probably bounce back up when I rehydrate. . .

Team practice for Pittsford United, with members of the O40A, O40B, and O30 teams in attendance. Good scrimmage at Meridian Center, although the pitch is uneven and the grass was longer than I expected, slowing down the play a bit. Used the turfs rather than the cleats.

Played central midfield throughout the match. I didn't worry too much if the ball got through, since a guy named Craig Demmin was playing Central D behind me. Craig plays for the Pittsford O30 Premier team. Even though he's been retired from the Rhinos for a few years now, he's still in great shape and such a solid player. I remember watching him and Schweitzer anchor the Rhinos D for all those years, and he doesn't appear to have lost a step. It's great that he's stayed involved in the sport - he evidently coaches a few youth teams on the side.

Hiking 40:00 [2]

Lunch loop - I should check the mileage on this!

Orienteering race (Orange Course) 26:55 [5] 2.8 km (9:37 / km)

US Relay Championships - Orange Course - Leg #2

Mitch ran first leg, Rob S. ran #3 and Rob H. ran #4. Overall was pretty happy with the run. One blunder was #5 - got a bit off on the bearing to the W, saw a control in a reentrant and made for it. Checked the # and - bzzzt - wrong answer. Headed east toward a collecting trail to start again. Luckily I hit on a control which was on my map (#6) and relocated from that - zipped over the hill to #5, back to #6 and caught the remaining controls cleanly.

Therefore, I was both hurt and helped by the large number of controls set out in the woods. I also wasn't using the compass, and that would have prevented the wandering off line that I experienced.

Great fun, though. Courses were well laid out and it seemed like everyone had a good time. Kudos to the crew!

Hiking 50:00 [3]

Hiking some trails in Powder Mills as a cool down and stretch out from the relay championships. Too nice a day to sit around.

Orienteering race (Red Course) 1:07:04 [4] 4.59 km (14:37 / km) +150m 12:34 / km
weight:207lbs

US Middle Distance Championships - Red Course

For my first A-meet, wanted to work on some basics and especially staying on the map. Was successful in that regard, although it probably slowed down my overall time.

Minor bobble on #4, tried to minimize contour lines, but ended up too far W of the control, but managed to relocate quickly. Remaining controls hit pretty cleanly.

Nice race and fun atmosphere. Will post splits later.

Orienteering race (Sprint 3) 26:01 [5] 2.6 km (10:00 / km)

US Middle Distance Championships - Sprint Course

#1 - #3 were fine. Then tried to go too fast & didn't pay enough attention to the map. Inexplicably took wrong direction out of #3 and ended up at the trout pond, then had to backtrack all the way along the powerlines to #4. Got caught trying to slog through a swamp on the way to #5, when going along the path would have been FAR easier, then went to #6, thought it was the wrong control #, checked out #14, realized I was just being stupid and went back to #6. At this point I settled down and started paying attention to the map - hmmm - what an idea. Remaining controls were better, but I had lost too much time at that point. Probably could have shaved 3-4 minutes off the total time.

I do this sort of thing on Sprints all the time. Need to work on it.
