Note

Current status: Greg @ 312 km. With 2 hrs left, he's on track to break the all time record of 327 km. I'm at 217 km with thoroughly worn out legs and a shoulder that's been hurting since km 30.

Skate Ski (Equinox 24 Challenge)

Epic race on the West Yellowstone trails. 9 km loop during the day, switched to a flatter 6 km loop for the night. Nice trails, well groomed. Official total distance was 242 km.

The night trails had set up hard and were wicked fast. Temp dropped to 10 F overnight.

Had trouble with legs dying after 20 hours. Getting totally winded on the hills and legs were weak. Finally dawned on me I couldn't breath fully because of congestion in my lungs. I think it was heavy extended exertion, high altitude (6k) and really cold air. By morning I had burbling in my lungs with heavy breathing. Seems to be clearing up now with a lot of hacking.

Used 3 pair of skis, waxed for range of expected conditions. Started on Madshus with Swix HF6 blue. Shifted after 25 km to Peltonens with HF7 purple topped by ironed in fluro powder. For about 20 km used Peltonens with HF8 red. All the skis had a base layer of Swix Marathon HF moly. By late afternoon I was back on the
HF7. When we got on the frozen granular night trails, I stayed on the7's because they were so fast even when the temp plummeted. Ultimately, I probably skied 200 km on those skis. By then all the fluro was gone and the HF7 too. The Marathon wax is pitched for durability and it did stay on except for a wear patch on the inside edge at the tip. I switched them to opposite feet on a feed stop and took care of that.
