Orienteering 1:31:08 [3] 5.4 mi (16:53 / mi)

Waterloo orienteering red.

No major problems, a few minor mistakes that I'd like to get rid of. Ran trails and roads and it went well. Some knee pain continuing from yesterday, hoping a few days off is enough to remedy it.

Adventure Racing 3:49:00 [3] 25.0 mi (9:10 / mi)

Artprize AR, Grand Rapids

Wanted to give another sprint a try to see how we could do. Had a very different feel from all the other races we've done, being downtown, but we still had a lot of fun.

Strategizing ahead we decided we would probably do better mentally and physically if we ran then biked, so that's what we stuck with when we got the maps.

Took off in a slightly different direction than a majority of the teams, so we didn't have to wait to punch in at the first couple controls, which was nice, especially with so many people starting (~100 coed). Hit one of the challenges early where Sydney had to describe a piece of art and I had to go in and identify it. Basically the blind leading the blind. Next challenge was finding 7 signs with leaves on them, we found 9, everything looked like a leaf! After those the challenges started going a bit better. The 19 foot checkpoints downtown with 5 challenges took us about 1:40, 7 miles, and we were feeling pretty good.

Hopped on the bikes, and this was a little frustrating having to deal with traffic, lights, pedestrians, etc. very different feel. Made our biggest blunder on the bike because we were relying on road names and missed a turn when one was different. Added probably about a mile, and resulting in me crashing on a flat wide road with no traffic, not really sure what happened but I landed on grass and stood right up, so it was all good. There challenges went will, including the random kayak for about 5 minutes where we zoomed past a number of teams.foot orienteering section of 5 checkpoints was painful, we both face planted a few times and got some pretty big bruises, just rushing trying to make up for our blunder. Bike + foot section took about 2 hours, 18 miles with the other 4 challenges and 19 total checkpoints.

Came in 5th 2 person coed. Winner beat us by about 25 minutes. We figure all the blunders probably cost us 10-15. I'll take responsibility since syd let me be navigator for some reason.

Thanks Mark for the great race!
