orienteering race 5:48:55 [3] ** 29.5 mi (11:50 / mi) +850m 10:51 / mi
46c shoes: Adidas Trail racer

Fair Hill O marathon.

Start-1. Just followed along, keeping Samantha in sight, on the trail I figured everyone would take trails and field, but first I saw Randy off into the woods, then Sam and others. I stuck to my plan to see how the trail/field route would compare to through the woods. Looked like a dead heat at the control.
1-4. Since I didn't have my glasses on (they were still in my pocket) I followed the crowd, but found that Allison seemed to be doing an excellent job so stayed with her.
5-Followed Sam out of 4, and commented halfway along that it was a poor route. OK, get out my glasses .....
6-Bob Lux and Angelica were just ahead. Some conversation with her about how far she was going.....
9-Angelica and Allison ahead in the field, but no one in sight at the control.
Had decided to go left, but Angelica turned right across the stream, then stopped. For the life of me I couldn't see where we were on the map, so when Jeff Schapiro and PG appeared I followed them, along the route I had originally intended.
14- Took some looks at this beforehand and had decided staying left was best. Behind Peter and Angelica, Allison was staying right in the field.
15- Noticed some drag in the field and looked down to find the aft sole of the shoe flopping around. Ripped it off....
17- Was with Peter, he cut towards the woods immediately, I delayed to the 2nd field. He was faster.
19- Dave Onkst going the other way.....
22- Bob Lux and Angelica just ahead, Peter right behind.
At this point, 2 1/2 hours, I felt fine, and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to finish up feeling this good?". I was concerned about the shoes and had thought I should change to the other pair. Peter went off, Joe B went by..Sam was supposedly 10 minutes ahead.
"what the heck, I'll go and see if I catch Sam, or my shoe falls apart.."
23,24- Just behind Joe.
25- Joe pulls away, Dave goes by, and I blindly follow him 50 meters too far south on the road before, things look odd, compass says "south". Yell to Dave and head back to the control.
27-Glimse of Dave and Joe ahead in the field.
28- Dave and Joe are leaving as I arrive.
Trying to form a plan to ward off malaise of so far to go, I say that, "if I can get to 40, I am done and will make it". So the goal is to get through the 30's.
32- Eric Smith coming in from the right.
35- Sleeves rolled up, sun bright, no one around, a beautiful day to be out for a long run.
36- Mt. Bikers coming very slow up the trail from the south as I leave 35.
I think I could actually be running faster than they....
They do manage to coast by me on the downhill.
Excellent service from John Campbell at the aid station. Take a bit long, but well worth it.
39- Fall through ice and pull hamstring in large puddle. Wonder if I will topple over but curse and grit out of it. Stop to wipe gobs of mud off the shoes.
40- Pass walkers and horses, and make it to the interim goal.
41- Lovely spot with giant toadstools..
42- Being lazy I head out to the road, and discover myself 3 meters above and fenced off from the control. Hmmm maybe I should read the clues , eh?
Clamber down the washed out fence, over the culvert, and drop carefully to the trail.
43- A long leg, but essentially done...
44- I think I see Joe ahead heading up to 46.
46- Give up trying to run up the lumpy trail...
F- Cheered in by Ross.

Shoes that will never run again.

Afterwards, PG scrutinized the splits. The only scalp he got was mine, but he was looking for some hairs from the 2 winners.
