Taking the day off. January was a good training month.

Skiing 1:15:34 [2] 20.02 km (3:46 / km) +254m 3:33 / km

We tried to sleep in this morning, but that didn't really work. We hemmed and hawed about going skiing versus laying low and catching up on life, but who are we kidding? We drove up to Seeley. I first skied with Inara (4km) while Alli skied, and then we traded. Alli and Inara skied another 2km, and I skated. Very enjoyable, though I felt pretty beat by the end.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

I put out controls for GrizO's first event of 2022 - a night event at the Ranch Club, which is a golf course with some open terrain around it and housing developments in the middle.

My plan was to put out 30 controls, and I gave myself about 1:40 to do it. Right off the bat, I realized this was going to be a struggle. The snow depth was close to a foot with a solid crust on top, which meant postholing the entire way. Add to that the fact that at each control I had ti put in a stake, attach a flag, and also attach a reflector mini-flag, and there was no chance I would be done in time.

By the time the event was supposed to start, I had ten flags left to put out, and it had gotten dark and down to 14F. My low point came when on the way to put out #37, I turned onto an icy sidewalk, and my legs went out from under. I hit the deck hard, smacking my knee and hip and cursing loudly. I proceeded to limp to #37, only to find that I had left all the stakes at the previous control and had no way to place the flag.

Poor Alli took the brunt of dealing with participants who had to be delayed for a while. Luckily, the Ranch Club opened a warm indoor space for us, complete with snacks and beverages, and so no one was too cold or too mad. We ended up cutting out 7 controls and having people cross them off their maps. Except that one group managed to start before being told this, so I ended up tracking them down as they got to the first control that hadn't been put out. They were in good spirits, and did not seem upset by this, but I still felt awful about it.

After the initial debacle, things went better, and most folks seemed to have a really good time. I clearly bit off more than I could chew this time around, and have hopefully learned a lesson.

Results and maps will be up shortly.

Note

I helped coach the 6-7 year-olds at ZANY again tonight, while Inara skied around with her 5-year-old group. Someone set up a story trail along the meadow loop at Pattee Canyon. There were signs every 20 meters or so, and each sign had the next page (with pictures) from a story. The kids can ski from sign to sign and read the whole story while actually skiing. I thought it was brilliant.

Running 54:39 [3] 5.72 mi (9:33 / mi) +322m 8:08 / mi

I ran up the backside of Barmeyer hill with the dogs. It was about 20F, with glorious sunshine and a ton of snow. Really pleasant, though my back clearly doesn't love running on snow, so I can't do this too often. Dogs appear tired now.

Skiing 1:26:27 intensity: (1:08:57 @3) + (17:30 @5) 20.07 km (4:18 / km) +306m 4:00 / km
ahr:133 max:185

Skate skiing at Pattee. Beautiful day, as the icy fog lifted in the early afternoon. I decided to attempt intervals - my first ski intervals in about 20 years. I did four intervals of the meadow loop, trying for something just below a race effort. The times showed that I went out too fast (just under 3:00/km), and my form deteriorated with each loop: 4:18, 4:23, 4:28, 4:29.

When I run, I can easily switch between jogging pace, long run pace, 5km pace, 400m pace, and full-out sprint. When skiing, I find that I basically have a ski pace and a "go as hard as you can while flailing uncontrollably" pace. I need to work on developing something in between...

On my cooldown I ran into Alli, and we skied a loop together. She has improved a ton this winter!

Skiing 15:00 [1]

Warmup, in which I realized that I needed to put on like three more layers of clothes. I did go with full GrizO gear: GrizO tights, GrizO jersey, GrizO wind jacket, and GrizO buff!

Ski Race race 33:12 [5] 11.14 km (2:59 / km) +93m 2:52 / km
ahr:92 max:130

Since Inara is making her first foray into ski racing this weekend, I thought I should show up and do the same. I entered my first skate ski race in 20 years - a 10km mass start at Lubrecht - and was very nervous heading into it! It was cold and very icy on the course, but still pretty fun. I was in 7th (out of 20) at the beginning, but gradually picked off three people in front of me on the first lap to get into 4th after about 3km. I then hung on for dear life to stay in 4th, a very long way behind the winner - former UNH skier Orion Berryman. Good times, but man, ski racing is hard.

Skiing 44:17 [2] 11.44 km (3:52 / km) +144m 3:38 / km
ahr:126 max:166

Cooldown.

A couple of hours after my race, Alli and Inara arrived for Inara's race. We did a warmup and got her ready. There was a pretty big group of kids at the start, and this time there actually was another 5-year-old doing the 2km classic race with Inara. This was great, as the two tiny kids had a back-and-forth battle most of the way. At one turn, the other girl skied right into Inara, and proceeded to bounce off and fall down, while Inara stayed upright. Then there was another moment where both of them faceplanted on the same uphill at the same time. Inara was about 10m in front at the top of the last hill, and then just hammered the downhills to extend the margin to about a minute at the finish. Once again - so proud of this tiny, but incredibly strong and tough, kid.

Skiing 45:48 [3] 13.02 km (3:31 / km) +156m 3:19 / km
ahr:140 max:176

Inara made her ski racing debut at Seeley Lake today! There were other 5-year-olds registered for the 1km race, but none of them showed, so she lined up at the start with a handful of 7- and 8-year-olds, who disappeared in front very quickly after the start. That did not phase Inara, and she skied the whole course by herself, doing her best, and got a huge cheer at the finish, as well as the 'youngest finisher' prize. So proud!

Afterwards I went for a quick loop on the 10km and 5km race courses to test out my new skate skis.

Rowing 36:52 intensity: (21:52 @1) + (15:00 @5)
ahr:79 max:112

Quick rowing workout, including a 15-minute 'race' effort at 1:58/500m.

This afternoon was the first session of ZANY, Missoula's youth nordic ski program. I feel very fortunate to live in a town that has a kids' ski program!

I was asked to help out with a group of 1st and 2nd graders, while Inara was in her own group with a bunch of 5- and 6-year-olds. It was somewhat controlled chaos, with about 100 total kids, but worked well once we broke out into groups. By the end of the session, most kids in my group were able to propel themselves forward on skis, which is a good start. We also played tag and soccer on skis, without any broken equipment, so I'll call it a win.

Skiing 1:41:58 [3] 28.74 km (3:33 / km) +444m 3:18 / km
ahr:124 max:173

Skating at Lubrecht with the dogs. On the downhill portions of the E trail, I was going too fast for the dogs to catch up, so I had to keep stopping and waiting for them to show up. Persik was good at finding me, but Gizmo kept trying to take poorly planned shortcuts and getting stuck in the deeper snow.

After this, I went out with Inara for another hour and a half. She did 7.7km, a new PB, I think.

Back to Seeley again today, since that's where the best skiing was. I had a nice long skate outing, and explored new (to me) trails, like Mountain View and Larch Knob. Really beautiful up here! After this I skated with Inara and grandma Jackie, shuttling back and forth between them.

Family outing to Seeley Lake. I did a loop classicing, but had very poor kick, so switched to skate skis and had a much better time on the second loop. I then skied with Inara and grandpa Darrell for a bit. Inara is getting more confident on skis with every outing.

It was raining outside, so time for elliptical intervals, 3x(3'-2'-1'). Inara had her first piano recital tonight, over Zoom! She did great, but was sad that she wasn't as good as the best kids. The best kids were 18 years old and have been playing for 11 years...

With Inara at Seeley Lake, teaching her to double-pole. She did great and had a lot of fun. After some cocoa, she and Alli went out again while I skied on my own.

Skiing 1:40:38 [2] 21.05 km (4:47 / km) +265m 4:30 / km
ahr:131 max:162

Classic skiing at Seeley Lake in the late afternoon. It was really lovely out, and the grooming was just excellent. I felt tired from the very first step, so most of the outing was a struggle physically, but very enjoyable mentally.

Rowing 37:18 intensity: (22:18 @2) + (15:00 @5)

Family workout time! Inara was on the elliptical, Alli did a fitness video, and I rowed. We watched Russian New Year's cartoons. I did a 15-minute 'race' segment, averaging 1:59.8/500m.

I think today will break my streak of consecutive days of skiing at 13, unless the snow stops coming down and the golf course gets groomed tonight.

Skiing 1:12:08 [0] 6.29 km (11:28 / km) +11m 11:22 / km
ahr:115 max:169

I took part in a skate ski clinic taught by Henry Reich of Missoula Nordic. There were only two participants, so I got good personalized feedback. A lot of it amounted to saying that my technique was stuck in the 1990s, which is not surprising, since that's when I learned to skate.

A few adjustments that I am recording here as a mental note:
- V1: hold the weak arm more parallel to the strong arm, and don't move it across the body
- V2 alternate: make the arm motion into one continuous motion, and have them in the raised position again when going onto the 'off' ski

- General: keep upper body more stable
- Work on getting hips further over the ski, especially when moving to right foot

It was a great clinic in lovely conditions. I am excited to participate in more Missoula Nordic activities going forward.

A classic ski in excellent conditions at Lubrecht with Persik. Parts of some trails were closed due to logging, so I did a couple of out-and-backs.

After this, I skied with Inara while Alli took part in an intermediate skate clinic. Great day.
