how far does she normally ski on her own? 2k sounds long!
She did 7.5km at Seeley Lake last weekend. That's her career long now.
Big deal. I bet I could ski that far.
But I bet she could do it slower.
She could probably beat me in ski-o.
Impressed! We have a 2k here this winter, but I'm not quite sure it would be fun for S yet...
2k on skis would probably not be all that fun for me. (Unless it's downhill on a green, haha). Props to Inara!
This is awesome. Makes one wonder why orienteering waits so long to introduce kids to the sport. By the time they are 10 they have already tried so many sports - many of which are a lot gnarlier (and expensive) than O.
Again so awesome to see this. What a great move Montana has ended up being.
To be fair, I can send out Inara on a ski course and say 'follow the markings', and she will do it and come back. But I still couldn't send her out on even the simplest white course by herself, even though she has been 'orienteering' since she was eight days old.
There is an extra cognitive component involved in orienteering that most kids can't handle until they are 8 or 9 or so. Prior to that, String-O and Maze-O seem like the best options.
I'm still waiting for that extra cognitive component to kick in to handle a Blue course at Surebridge.
String o' should be safe enough. Maybe time for Griz-O to start offering that. :-)
@Hammer "Makes one wonder why orienteering waits so long to introduce kids to the sport."
For the most part we don't introduce kids to the sport at all. DGL with ARK and a relatively small handful of others clubs and organizations are doing so but otherwise I would say kids introduce themselves when they stumble on the sport.
