Orienteering 2:30:00 [2] 8.8 mi (17:03 / mi) +350m 15:10 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Streamering and field checking (map corrections) for Boulder Dash. Spent a total of 5 hours 50 minutes which includes mapping 3 trails, and stopping quite a bit writing notes and marking up streamers, and just mostly looking around to verify locations. Figured about 2 hours of leisurely moving about.
4 PM

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi) +200m 16:01 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Then vetting some of the Day 2 (Steve's) controls. Spend about three hours, about half of it moving about.I inadvertently left my 1:5k blowup behind so had to navigate with 1:10k map which provided for a reading challenge in the dark intricate N areas. Eventually ran into Steve at a planned location where the map did not seem to make sense. Also it was just getting dark. I had a headlamp, but did not feel like fiddling with it, so I tried to find as many controls as possible on my way back to parking. Missed 3, found 5, the last of which was almost in complete darkness. A fun day, except for the light rain in the beginning. Had it not stopped, I'd probably had to deal with disintegrated documents.

Road Running 1:13:25 [3] 10.01 mi (7:20 / mi) +150m 7:00 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Marathon Training. I wanted to see how it feels running on the road.
Home to Wiswall Dam to Lee Hook Rd, to downtown Lee, loop around Allen Way, then W.Hill Road all the way to Packers Falls Rd, then back home. Exactly 10 miles after a few extra strides over to T park and back.

Hills were tough especially those that were sun exposed (~ 75 by the end). But I was able to maintain a 7:15 mile at the end, which was not bad. First mile was a warmup (~ 9 minutes).

Orienteering 2:16:45 [2] 10.45 mi (13:05 / mi)
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Trail and some off-trail run from Ht of land of Province Road N of Bow Lake, to Evans Mt, and over to Parker Mt. Ridge. I can never find a trail that connects from Evans to the Ridge. And the Ridge is tricky for relocation: multiple side hill-tops and mostly indistinct trails.

Surprise encounter: (the only person I saw all day): a hiker showed up as I was trying to locate myself, it ended up being Tom, the colleague and (greater) neighbor forester. This required a serious conversation about trees, trails, work, and everything else. Spent about 20 minutes gabbing before parting.

I started to get hungry, and as I missed the main ridge again, I plowed my way back to Evans Mt. Then a longer loop checking of the snowmobile trails and one resident's trail maze just N of where I parked.

Georgeous area of old farm fields, rocky hill tops, and mostly open woods, except near marshes and low points. About 15 yrs ago, there was talk about organizing a Rogaine around here. But then folks got pulled into other commitments. It would be fine terrain. Many private owners in this ridge of the "Blue Hills" , but they all seem to welcome foot-traffic. And they mow their trails. In the winter trails are open to snow mobiling. The NH "corridor" trails S7 goes through here.

Trail running 24:01 [3] 2.6 mi (9:14 / mi) +30m 8:55 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Run to work. As usual. Cooler, drier air today. Feels like relief.
5 PM

Trail running 1:04:02 [3] 6.14 mi (10:26 / mi) +80m 10:01 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 101

I had some time before dark, so looped around the NW corner of CW with its near obscured trails, then down to the river, across middle bridge and the S side of river back to Mill Road. Then over to the Surrey bike trails counter clockwise, and back via shelter and Spruce Hole.

First part was slow. It's surprising how rugged trails - roots etc - slow my pace done to about 13 min /miles. But I don't want to take any risks of foot/ankle injury.

Trail running 24:30 [3] 2.6 mi (9:25 / mi) +30m 9:06 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Run to work. Misty out from Jose and his entourage. Glasses were fogging up.
6 PM

Trail running 30:15 [3] 2.8 mi (10:48 / mi) +50m 10:14 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Running home. Already 6:30 by the time I left the office. Getting dark in the woods, plus glasses again fogging. Had to take it slow.

1 PM

Trail running 1:01:37 [3] 6.68 mi (9:13 / mi) +160m 8:35 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Midday run before the start of "Jose's spitting". No real plan. Used the softer heavier shoes again. It felt ok, although legs felt heavy on the ups.
Started off without any real plan -
To Spruce Hole on the neighbor trail, then over the top of solar pit, and over to Maud Jones Forest for the 0.8 mile loop. A bit of off-trail exploring, then back to Spruce Hole and various loops to field, and 3 x myhill.

It ended up being a mix of road, trail and off- trail with some hill repeats.

9 AM

Trail running 24:40 [3] 2.6 mi (9:29 / mi) +30m 9:10 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Run to work. The usual route. Heals are a bit sore from yesterday, so used the heavier, more padded shoes - my other "minimal" trail shoes are becoming super-minimal due to wear and tear.
6 PM

Trail running 34:30 [3] 3.54 mi (9:45 / mi) +60m 9:16 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 910 sz 9

Run home with 1 mile (2 hills and 1 flat tempo at access road) added. Now that they constructed bridges over every reentrant, there are now people using these trails. Had to slow three times for people with dogs. All well behaved.

11 AM

Trail running 2:11:36 [3] 13.13 mi (10:01 / mi) +200m 9:34 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 101

Distance Training. Bike trails at Surrey, connecting to Wiswall Rd., then over the dam to Littlejohn. Some looping, and some trail exploring about halfway: found a slightly overgrown trail leading along Follet's brook to Mastin Dr in Newmarket. Then turned back, another loop at Littlejohns - home via Surrey biketrails S to E loop and out to shelter loop at W Foss Farm, and home as usual. Worked out nicely to add to a half!

I tried to keep it marathon pace, always breathing at every third step, but never every second step, which I tend to fall into when I am tired. That forced me to increase my cadence on the uphills, but seemed more energy efficient in the long run. Only the last 2 miles were a bit of a struggle. Goal is to overcome the fatigue and be able to run a half at even energy level.

Cool but very humid (foggy) at the beginning (65 F), warmer and sunny but drier at the end (around 70F).

Orienteering race 1:27:55 [3] *** 4.6 mi (19:07 / mi) +170m 17:09 / mi
spiked:9/12c shoes: New Balance MT 101 sz 9

Red Course: 6.5 km. This was a little better than yesterday in terms of navigation. Legs were tired from yesterday, so generally I moved slower. I navigated well 1 - 5, but then searched for 6 - attacked from another boulder than I thought. Long detour route to 7 using split rock trail which was not on the map, and I did not remember its location correctly !
Then a mistake at 8: Searched for it too high. Finally at 11, I saw 3 reentrants : the logged area makes more things visible than are on the map. Could have been 10 min faster which would have gotten me up to third place.

Orienteering race 1:36:39 [3] 4.8 mi (20:08 / mi) +150m 18:21 / mi
shoes: New Balance MT 101 sz 9

Pawtuckaway Camping Weekend. Red Course 6.6km.
Pretty dreadful navigation on controls 2 - 4 (already lost about 10 min to Ian). Then another big mistake at 9: Drifted too far N on the approach and bummed into the marsh N of the control. Had to plow through the green (unmapped) along the marsh to get to S tip, then still could not find the flag by drifting into an easterly reentrant. Went back to marsh, re-attacked. Must have been tired - more mentally than physically. I could have run faster!
8 PM

Orienteering race 2:13:55 [3] 6.5 mi (20:36 / mi) +150m 19:13 / mi
shoes: Icebug

Wicked Hard Night O. Teamed up with J.J. which made for a pleasant event. We moved swiftly and steadily, some jogging some walking. We complemented each other with navigation. The new logged areas were quite confusing - we never knew whether we were on one of the trails that Jim had mapped for the occasion, or something else. 3 loops, we did 1, 3, then 2 - the last was avoiding the logged areas. We came in 2nd (and third) among the "all getters". Thanks Jim for setting it all up and mapping the logged areas !!
