o-maps:
I did a lot of the same stuff you did.
#1: Same high route for the same reasons: time to do some planning, and simplifying the attack. But you executed it better; as is often the case for me, I got too tunnel-visioned in the attack and missed a little right and long. I think I focused on a group of Joshuas that I (incorrectly) thought the control was behind, and suspect that if only I had scanned a bit left and right coming down the spur, I probably would have easily seen it.
#2: Leaving #1, I stayed in the wash for a ways longer than you before climbing to the ridge. AP says that was my best split, so I guess it was a good idea.
#9: Usually I overstudy upcoming route choices to a fault, but like you I went into #8 without a plan. Unlike you, I made the instant decision to climb straight south out of 8, over the ridge and onto the major trail in the reentrant. It may have been worth the "payment" of that steep climb because after that the route was a simple direct trail run. Although, Phil Bricker started the leg similar to you but stayed lower and his split was almost identical to mine. As for missing the control left, I did too and so did every single other person I talked to on Brown X. So the consensus is that it was hung too high in the reentrant. Not a big deal since the visibility was so good. I thought this leg was the most interesting on the course.
The rest: Pretty much the same as you. Moving with a little extra vigor 10-11-F since Walter S was in view after re-catching me at 9 after making a really big error on that leg.
