I actually knew that. I was introduced to the band when I did a summer-abroad study trip. It was about 7-8 weeks, spending time at London, Exeter, Edinburgh and Cambridge.

Beginning of a tangent....we even had a week-long break. I took my break as an orienteering trip. I went to Switzerland and ran at the precursor of JWOC. The event was at Chur and was incredibly difficult. But it was loads of fun. I'd done very little travel on my own and was basically clueless about how to get around.

I was the only US runner. During the week, I got a lot of help from the Canadians (tyring to remember who was there...maybe Chris and Magali Robert, Glen Geddes...?).

I just wikipedia'd JWOC and it says:

"An international junior match was arranged first time in 1983 in Ry, Denmark, and then in 1984 (Hartberg, Austria) and 1985 (Font-Romeau, France)."

But that's not correct. There was an event in Chur in 1982. I also went to Hartberg a few years later and that, too, was a good experience.

Further down a rabbit hole....I found a report from the race (go to page 53 of this):

I got the Canadians pretty well...forgot Mike Day and the leader Bruce Brenot.

I wonder what those folks are doing these days...

And I will be extremely disappointed if this thread doesn't get a post from any of the Canadians on AP who listen to 80s/90s music and know Canadian O' history.

I had a similar experience in Marianske Lasne (Marienbad) and Halden with Grant Bluett (AUS). I think it was '89 and '90. Two very funny summers.

I met Bruce Brenot at WOC in Scotland in 2015, so I guess he's still around in orientering.

Oh, and I met Magali at WOC in Switzerland in 2012.
