Do you know if the rest of the splits will be uploaded? Not that I went fast, just interested. Or do you need to upload yourself?

I entered them myself, though I'm hoping the UNO peeps have the data on their little download box and will upload them.

They should at the very least have them on little slips of paper. Assuming they recorded some sort of correspondence between names and SI numbers, that is. Pretty sure they never asked for my number, but Ernst did write down my finishing time next to my name on a sheet of paper.

And HA!, I got you on one split, Ian. (Because I was trying to stay ahead of Ari.)

Yeah, I missed 16 left. Sadness ensued. Well played.

We were also left, but not by much. We stopped, Ari continued uphill a bit, I turned and saw it just behind us to the right. I scampered over to punch, then I did the evil thing and sidled away from the control toward 17 while staring intently at my map, feigning that I was still looking, until I saw that Ari had spotted it, and then I hightailed it out of there. At least, I think he saw it. I didn't see him after that.

(Sadness? I only got you by four seconds!)

Oh, well I was sad that I missed the control. I had stopped about 150m short on 10 and hung out for five minutes, and I was trying to get my rhythm back. Apart from missing 13 high, 11-15 had gone well, so I was irritated to be running and see 16 far back and to the right of me. I suppose I'm sad I lost the split, too.

Devious tactic, though didn't sidling slow you down? I sometimes will try to conceal that I've found a control when my competitors are around, but I usually like to keep my speed constant as though I was still in "search" mode and not happily converging on a control I see.

Ok - I give up - How do I add a new course (red) to the event so I can add my splits?

I wasn't completely wasting the time, I was looking at upcoming section of the map in advance instead of looking at it later. And I'm an old man, I have to slow down and take a breather once in a while anyway. I was still moving in the right direction, I mostly just made it look like I was still hunting for something in the vicinity. Part of that comes from looking all around instead of just up ahead. And it was only for a few seconds; Ari caught on pretty quick. I was suprised that he didn't hear the control beep when I punched, and so I dragged it out for a little bit.

Splits - Add a New Race - click on the date, then the pulldown will let you select the UNO event, and you fill in the rest of the details.

(Hadn't done that in a while, had to think about it!)

Ah - got it. Thanks. If nobody beats me to it, I will add the red course later on.

Red added, but I don't have distance. If someone have those, feel free to add them.

Got a ruler?
Apr 30, 2015 2:30 PM #
Bo:
Yeah, all right. I thought about that, but I was hoping for a more accurate measure. Probably wont make much of a difference though so I should probably just go old school and get it over with.

jjcote:
More accurate than what? It's a 1:10000 map, easy enough to measure to the nearest millimeter, that's 10 m on the ground. Anything finer resolution than that I wouldn't put any faith in anyway.

Original course setters file - probably Purple Pen. I figured - 19 controls - 10 meters off here and there could add up. What I didn't consider was that I could check it against the total course length provided on the clue sheet which (I would assume) was generated from the course file and catch any large discrepancy.

So - I measured, checked against the descriptions and only lost 30 meters. Those numbers are in and anyone on Red can enter their splits as they like.

The next question is whether Ian or I has a ruler. (Actually, I often do this by scanning the map, pulling it into 0CAD, and using the ruler in there to measure each leg. Which is sometimes more accurate than the stated course length is the straight lines traverse uncrossable water or out-of-bounds or whatever and the course setter didn't compensate for that.)

I suspect Ian used a burito ...

Alternatively, if you have logged a GPS track, AP can calculate the straight-line distance for you, and will offer to do so on the "edit lengths" page. This can go wrong if the SI units' clocks are badly out of sync or something like that.
