Yeah, they snuck up on me 2 weeks ago. I wasn't really paying attention, thinking it was too early to start the allergy meds, and then they hit and it took 3 days of medication to get them to calm down.

I took a fast-acting Claritin tablet and my nose stopped running within a half hour! It's only a 12-hour tablet, though, so I may need to get some 24-hour ones to have on hand. Claritin works for me and doesn't make me feel as drowsy as many other allergy tabs. (Expiration date was a year ago, but it worked...)

Claritin (24-hour) is what I take too. I take it in the evening, because it does make me groggy for a while, despite being "non-drowsy," and this way I'm sleeping through that. Once I start them for the allergy season, I have to take them daily to keep the allergies in check. They just don't respond immediately to the medication if I wait, but I'm glad yours did!
