Adventure Race race 7:51:00 [4]
RockstAR in Bark Lake
Route choice was key for this race and we decided to make the most of our rented canoe and take the route that had the most canoeing.
The race started with a bike on ATV trail and the riding was pretty good with a few nice puddles to make things interesting. I guess Nicole was feeling the heat during the bike as she stopped in the middle of a puddle and ended up falling right over (she must be new to the clip in peddles!). Once the bike made it out on the road we worked together and arrived at the transition with the top teams.
I felt pretty good about the route choice initially however it took longer than I expected to canoe up to where we had to run on paths to get to the CPs and then canoe back (plus the 2 x 1 km portage was not so fun...even worse for Nicole since she carried the canoe! ;). Plus, on this route there were 2 out and back CPs that were of high point value but took way to long to get considering we had to travel each distance twice. At this point, we were both getting pretty tired.
Once our last portage was complete, we were feeling a bit better and ran to get a quick 20 point CP. Along the trail, I had a spectacular bail (the maps went flying 10 feet high) and when I landed on the ground I started screaming in pain as both of my calves cramped up at the same time. I looked over and Nik had a terrified look in her face; then I realized that she had thought I had broke something. My yell turned to laughter and I let her know that all was well.
With just over an hour to go, we were back at the transition and picked up an easy 90 points by diving for CPs (easiest points I ever got as all I did was encourage Nicole on...although I was as wet as she was because it was raining pretty hard by now). Then we ran for a few more CPs that were fairly close and arrived just before the cutoff.
The race and format made for a great day and I would recommend this race to everyone...the Johnsons will be back. The after party is also a good perk for well deserved beers!
