Walking 21:46 [3] 0.6 mi (36:16 / mi)
weight:232lbs

This may conclude my attempts to do an early walk with the dogs, as they stop too much and 50% of them don't seem to want to walk.

Walking 36:21 [0] 1.5 mi (24:14 / mi)

Successfully got Harvey on time to his first day at his new school. I think a family from four doors down was behind us, but I'm not 100% so you can imagine how little time I spend in my front yard.

I was glad he went in enthusiastically.

One of the craziest drives out of Dearborn in my 20 years at Ford (the massive power outage might be about the top).

Caught a bit of rain on the track, so we called it for lunch and I went to update some stuff in Allen Park.

Rain wasn't too bad, so I chanced the shorter + faster way, Southfield to 96, instead of the longer way.

Mistake! Heavens opened, and 3" (75 mm) of rain in 30 minutes started to flood the underpasses. By luck rather than skill I decided to bail to some exit and it turned out no one was going through that puddle. But the surface streets had construction and their own minor flooding, and you couldn't easily get around on the neighborhood streets because cars were at least rocker deep most of the time.

I longed for a Bronco (either one - Sport can do 23" puddles, real Bronco can do 33" fording depth), but the Subie got through what I did try and I made it to 96 which was fine.

In hindsight, service drive to 96 may have been faster. Well, taking 94 on any chance of quality rain would have been the best idea.

By chance one of the parents at tonight's park with Harvey also works in Dearborn....she had to drive to Detroit and then backtrack to get around it.

Apologies on photo quality, I was trying to avoid being trapped.

Phone grabbed focus on litter instead of the underpass...that's a fair bit of water.

Even the relatively high ground of the service drive had quality puddles, curb deep in front of me.

Back behind the soaked passenger window, you can see a Gen 1 Ford Fusion bumper deep. Maybe the center of roads would have been passible but I was spooked!

Walking 45:26 [3] 1.85 mi (24:34 / mi)

Wagon may win the day. It was by far the fastest option tested, at 20 minutes, which included two minutes of vigorous disagreement about route choice. (Harvey, for unknown reasons, despises Blanche Street.)

It does give the excuse to get an upgraded bike trailer for rainy / cold days, especially if I prep a bad weather bike.

Walking 32:49 [3] 0.75 mi (43:45 / mi)

Still three minutes late, even trying the pedal car. Leave 45-60 minutes before the end of the window? Give up and be lame car driving person? I am at a loss. :|

Walking 1:13:15 [3] 1.4 mi (52:19 / mi)

The first block took about 35 minutes, with more wailing and gnashing of teeth than seemed warranted.

I have concerns about making this work when there's an actual time target next week....

Fun course from the toboggan top at Kensington. Igor was up by 2:30 or so, but mostly happy to run a chunk of it at 90 deg F.

Sad that some of the the radio gear wasn't cooperating, and the radio gear that did cooperating required more stopping than I was willing to do with that many mosquitoes. Another time!

Thanks Joe!!!

Walking 18:50 [1] 0.7 mi (26:54 / mi)

Harvey's space time does not line up with mine, and so 90 minutes is not enough time, may have to look at 105 minutes to...eat half a waffle, brush teeth, change clothes, walk 1 km. We would have made it, but b a r e l y.

Testing the get up and get to school before it truly starts. Good to do a trial, as I think I got him up slightly too late, and started the walk slightly too late (3 year old not quite equalling 3 mph).

Glanced at the map and saw that "always turn right" worked for what I wanted, which did not account for the +4 miles that added of xc ski trails (not on all of the trail maps) so I skipped at bit at the end to make up time.

Also I should not have inverted my bike to attempt to pack it in the car, as I haven't gotten whatever air is in the lines out and the back brake is as weak as my fitness.

Good times, would love to ride this more than twice per decade.

~~

Yesterday's line o exercise: took Harvey to a beach, he took his sandals off, then at one point he was kicking wet sand at me, three polite requests to stop = me hauling him back off to the car. I put his sandals on top of the car while I strapped him...and forgot about then. Realized it when we got back to the hotel. NO no no.

Dropped off spouse and son, then drove back. They were only three minutes from the hotel, but at the longest line in the lower peninsula, so it was a 20 some minute operation. They had almost made it all the way back, until I finally went fast enough to blow them off. Phew! Glad they were easy to locate.

A couple items from Meijer..it is possibly faster to walk than drive and park and walk in, if you don't mind stepping over a low guardrail.

Biking (Wheelies) 35:49 [1] 3.1 mi (5.2 mph)

Tried to do some wheelies around the farm trails, but oof that's hard, between the bumps, weird camber, narrow tire grooves, then you have sand and mud which will only spin instead of helping you pedal hard to save a wheelie. I did pop out to a gravel road and bust a quality quarter miler...if I hadn't hit the T I could have gone longer I think, but I couldn't make the corner.

One minor crash trying to do a wheelie down a really steep grass slope and finding out the back brake needs a bit more bit. No harm done. Definitely not as much harm as kicking the pedals to spin them back to get on and leaving my shin in the way, oops.

Biking 46:02 [3] 2.31 mi (3.0 mph)

Harvey rides his pedal car around the parking lot, and I do wheelie practice, it's a nice time.

More wheelies, but I was tired so not especially productive. Some full pulls on some blocks though. I think the rear looses a few psi and maybe that was a factor as well, a touch soggy which makes it slightly harder to correct....else just tiredness.

The first 19 miles were pleasant and dry. Then the heavens opened, and a train blocked my way. I found an awning, but was soaked by the time I finished the last bit.

Not my finest, but nice to get out.

I thought I could loosely recreate my 2017 route, as that worked well. However, I didn't really think about how many ups and downs one encounters when 10 m contours obscure some up and down, and I was not moving very fast uphill.

Tactical error: it was a good idea to try my ski o map holder, but what I didn't think about was that it sits about 4" too high without reader glasses or bifocals. It still worked for some parts as I had the poles out by around our halfway time.

Biggest route error was thinking I could find a way to punch through a mapped clearing / rough open. I didn't think we were competitive by that point, which limited my desire to crawl, so we ended up on a huge dead slog to not pickup a bunch of points SW of the start. In hindsight, Livelox may show us close to 110 points of stuff in that area, which will be a little frustrating.

I enjoyed it and would go back next year. It'd be interesting to see if we can use some mental notes to tweak the vegetation settings. The map is generally speckled with green, but in some of those places, it could be pure white for dozens of acres, while other speckled areas are in no way much above 20% running speed.

Insert standard text about decreasing weight and increasing fitness. Cris had easily 2x the hill climbing power.

Biking 45:09 [3] 6.71 mi (8.9 mph) +47m

More wheelies!

This counts as exercise as my HR is higher than on the trainer.

A lot of almosts, a little tired to bring some things home.

Highlight: successfully went up the parking deck, made the first 1.5 corners, and then saw people fighting with boxing gloves.
