Three Peaks race.
Start -> Pen-y-Ghent: 33:55 (57th)
Started reasonably conservatively, and was surprised the general pace wasn't higher to begin with. Felt alright for the first ~15mins but then started to feel a bit drained and started going backwards. The feels and position continued to get worse for the remainder of the first climb, just in time to go past Mum and Jamie. Told myself that I'd let that be the trough of my position for the race and could then get the legs going on the long section to the railway bridge.
Initially this started to materialise as I went through a number of people on the descent, but very quickly started going backwards again when it flattened off. Had been checking my sugars a few times and they were persistently too high, meaning I couldn't take in any gels (not sure they would have a positive impact anyway when sugar levels are already too high?). So the slog section, and it really was a slog, was a bit weird for me. Felt like I wanted to sit down and go to sleep, lacking any energy to work hard (heart rate never got going).
Tried to make peace with treating it more like a long run, and who knows there's always a glimmer of hope in long races. I'd also found myself in a prime spectator spot among the leading women, with some decent entertainment going on. Staying somewhat in touch with them seemed like a good enough reason to at least keep ambling along.
Arrived at Ribblehead with Ben and Zach, appreciating some chat with them and some shout outs from various people in the crowds. Naomi had taken some refreshments for us, although I didn't take any as there were still gazillions left in my vest. Checked my sugars again here and although still on the end, they'd come down to in range so I had my first gel at roughly 90mins.
Settling into the second climb, I was surprised to almost instantly start working through people. This wasn't a conscious effort, nor did it feel like I was working hard or moving well. Just seemed like everyone suddenly started walking, even on the gradual lower slopes. Took another gel at about 2hrs to try and keep some decent momentum on the steeper bit of the climb. Got to the checkpoint feeling the best I had yet, having gone through 19 people, but didn't realise that was the top of Whernside and thought there was more to do.
Whernside -> Hill Inn: 18:59 (19th) / 2:27:51 (45th)
Once out of the clag it was clear there wasn't in fact any more climb to do, instead what looked like a nice little descent off the hill. Enjoyed that bit, definitely feeling more up for racing and made Cat my aim by the next checkpoint (she'd seemingly climbed very nicely up Whernside). Unfortunately, the descent sent through a grenade through my stomach. Could barely keep moving but remembered there was a loo at Ribblehead and hoped there'd also be one at the next checkpoint. After an age to get there, my luck was partially in. There was a loo, but it was engaged. Turned out to be a marshall in there and he was seemingly in no rush. In the meantime I had a quick drink and was pleased to hear from Naomi that Sasha was well up there.
Hill Inn -> Ingleborough: 36:12 (49th) / 3:04:03 (45th)
Slightly depressing to see how many people had got past during my pit stop but generally feeling a bit more positive and thought the worst was behind me. Wouldn't exactly say I was in racing mode, just a decent enough plod to be the one moving through the people around. A nice enough climb in the sun and looked forward to reaching the steep bit. Other people were having a rough time, including a guy who was sat down and said he'd run out of food, thinking there would be some at the checkpoints. Gave him two of my gels to help - my sugars had rebounded back to being too high so didn't need them. Perhaps didn't work through quite as well as had hoped but by the top I'd got back all the positions I'd lost at Hill Inn. Cat had clearly had another very good climb as well, she was off and there weren't any women in sight behind me.
A frankly disastrous final section home. Stomach crumbled again, and this time my legs joined in on the action too, stiffening up completely. So a real tedious walk / jog to the finish that wasn't enjoyable in the slightest but eventually made it.
All in all perhaps one of my worst on the day performances, up there with the LAMM and Snowdonia Marathon. Although I'd certainly not done enough training to warrant a high placing, I could have given a better account of my current self.
The main challenge moving forward is understanding how best to manage blood sugars during races like these. This was the first long race since that being a thing for me, I'm sure there'll be more difficult outings but hopefully with trial and error I can work out what works best. Next time I think I'll keep a higher background dose (I went with 2 units rather than usual 3 in the morning) and perhaps increase that further and do something with the fast-acting dose (took 12 units for ~140g carbs porridge at half 6am, but then went too low and topped up with toast and banana).
I think the stomach was probably related to a high caffeine intake in the morning. Not something I've ever had a problem with before, but that seems like the best bet. And then the legs seizing up I think a combination of lack of fuelling and dehydration. I only had two gels and one small sip of tailwind throughout the entire race.
If I pull my finger out and get fit I will perhaps return but to be honest I found the hills and course pretty uninspiring. Bit fraudulent to call it a fell race. That said, I'm quite keen to give a good account of myself at races that family members have done and Mum won Three Peaks in 1982 so it would be nice to see how high I can get too.

Easy braids lap. Legs, or more specifically the tendons/ligaments/muscles down the right leg, are still not great. Losing hope for recovery before Saturday, which I'm becoming increasingly excited for even if not in the shape I'd envisioned when entering.
Actually in a bit of a positive feedback loop of enthusiasm, listening / watching to more running related things. Had a podcast with Katie Schide for this run, a cool athlete and interesting to hear some of her training changes and bad luck in the lead up to her UTMB victory. She's also a geologist, which obviously makes her even more cool (although as a side note, I'd be interested to know the highest placed UTMB athlete with a corporate job).
Also reminded me of a time in Chamonix when I unknowingly came across her partner Germain, who is also a top ultra runner. Was running along the Grand Balcon Nord and went past a few fit looking runners. Looked back a few minutes later and noticed one of them was following a little way behind. Upped the pace a bit to see if I could keep ahead of him and did, and he then turned off down a different trial down to cham but popped out the bottom just in front of him and got chatting a little. He'd had a similar thing of low key trying to catch me and found it quite funny. He's quite a charismatic bloke is Germain, bumped into him a few times since and always route for him and Katie in races.

Meant to do longer but got out of bed 75 mins later than planned. Still wanted to get some movement in before sitting at desk all day, so got out for 10mins. Probably not such a bad thing: just about enough to ease some stiffness, but not enough to uncover the fatigue that's hidden away for the first bit of a morning run.

5 x 3mins (1min) with Salty Dogs. Feeling like a 60 year old but gradually eased into it a little. Wanted to have done some hard running before weekend, but not enough to add any fatigue so stopped at the 3s. Another enjoyable evening with the group.

To footy with Jack, via meadows and innocent. Then from footy to mosque feeling a tad broken on the RHS.

Starting the season with a comprehensive victory, followed by a lazy kick about. As expected the first game in a few weeks led to some decent soreness / stiffness, particularly right calf.

Cobbler hill race - 3rd.
6km, 730m of climb so not my usual cup of tea. But beautiful hills around there, a race I've not done before, decent training and no doubt a fun day out so why the hell not. And what a day it turned out to be with wall to wall blue skies.
Immediately after the start the course turns onto a relatively narrow forest ride, perpendicular to some pretty close contours. Think everyone realised it would be easy to kill yourself within 5 minutes, so pace felt quite chilled and settled into a nice walk behind Smithy. Popped out of the trees sooner than expected and the terrain changed from the slippy slidey ride to incredibly dry grassy tussocky stuff. Gradient eased and pack started to string out a little. Phil and another guy were at the front, with Totton, Ali T, Smithy and a few others inbetween myself.
Tried to keep moving well without putting myself in the red and slowly picked through a few people. Think I was 7th or 8th at Arthur's Seat and then worked to close down the next few people along the ridge. Great to see Ali and Bash just before the final climb and used the rockier stuff as an easy way to keep more momentum than the guy ahead and caught and passed him. Purposefully held back a little to the top to make sure I had enough to quickly get going on the descent.. Saw Ali T and the other guy tumbling off the summit a decent chunk ahead but thought I could get Totton and Phil who were ahead.
Beautiful views at the top over the loch and the Arrochars to the left. A really cool hill, a shame not to be able to sit up there for a while. Straight back donw though and the course did a nice little loop, which was unexpected. Steep trail to begin with, with some rockier and more technical bits before joining up to the course up. Felt a bit gangly and slow to begin with but caught up to Totton reasonably quickly. Not the most aggressive on the traversy bit, before being told to jump off a wee crag by Ali and Sasha. Wasn't sure if they were baiting me into an ankle break but went for it and all g.
Not moving the best along the ridge but caught and passed Phil and then felt pretty comfortable that 3rd was mine, with the other two turning off for the last bit of descent too far in the distance to be catchable. So along the shoulder before turning down. The view down to the loch kind of just opens up to you and it looked intinimidatingly steep, which the MRT marshalls found amusing. Put in a bit of a push, nicely helped by Will's encouragment and then before long through the slippy trees and in to the finish.
All in all, reasonably pleased with the pacing but clearly lacking uphill shape. Descent also didn't feel great but I think you need some good shape and race agrresion to really feel like you're nailing it.
Great to watch everyone come in, everyone loving it and then followed by some dreamy chill outside at the loch / hotel.

Joined the old dogs fartlek call. 2 sets of 5 x 90 (30), 5 x 45 (15) except I felt atrocious and just about managed one set. When I got home it became apparent a lack of sugar in the blood was the likely cause of these feels. At least it was a stunning day to be out among the ponies, donkeys, retirees and school kids.

An hour or so after a long day of travel to see family. Felt surprisingly OK given I'd spent many hours in a car, some of which were spent listening to the abomination happening at the London stadium. Stunning spring evening so headed up to wilverley. Used to throw a tantrum when mum tried getting me to do that as a youngster. Did get nipped by a dog, which would have pissed me off then and still does now.

Brockenhurst parkrun. In winter this parkrun is a real scenic treat, but this was the first 'summer' edition which means it's four laps of the college playing fields. Just wanted a steady ish run so did that, although slipping about all over the place in the mud which made my slow af legs felt even slower. Thankfully there was good entertainment on the fives and footy pitches, which is where I'd rather have been in all honesty. Many moons ago I honed my footballing skills here on Saturday mornings. Who'd have known I'd be using this foundation to spoon chances and miss tackles on Monday nights at Peffermil.
