Orienteering 55:23 [2] 3.37 km (16:26 / km) +18m 16:00 / km

Night O - Ran a Nottingcook BD '07 brown course. Moon about 3/4ths but dark enough in woods. Parked right at finish which was a nice plus. Then jog to start on south side of forest. Got a bit beyond Woodbury lookout when I noticed cut trees & wide, fairly new rutted logging roads...grrrr! Had hard time finding old trail to start. Then brief rest in meadow, then back into a waste land only visible thru a light beam, fortunately. Might have found first cp - was prepared for land mark challenge, found that (& no swamp) but came upon a boulder that might have been it. Two was obnoxious...fallen trees, steep contouring & some rocky areas - missed but relocated on trail. Missed 7 - after stream, lots of deadfall, some logging - did not find RF - went back to road, returned carefully, could not find it..thick, scratchy etc. Forgot to restart watch, discovered that on #8.

305 later showed me I went to wrong bldr at 6 - explains the bldr I saw in the forest but not under the circle in leaving the wrong point.

Good experience, hard work but depressing at the start. Again & again, encroachments, chopping up of forest that houses may grow. Only things in the forest that lit up were a # of thumb tack size reflectors on trees along a wide trail. Think they were for snowmobilers- tiny yet effective. At the end, the car lit up from 200m thanks to a "proper" light. Made the activity/task of nite O more familiar....

Black Brook-Puragatory CCW, as pleasant a Thanksgiving Day as could be. Passed several runners in t shirt & shorts, could have worn a singlet by the noontime end. The most pleasant Thanksgiving wish came from a Santa Claus-type old guy whose yard had by far the greatest amount of refuse on the entire run. Now any guilt-trip regarding calories has been averted. Will peruse archives to see what other T-giving days offered in way of exercise.

BPD 5k started at 0800, cost $25. It was 31F at 0825.
Too bad they don't start around 11A & charge less - might have more entrants. Lady I hiked with a few days ago said $50 for her & husband was too big an expense (charity or whatever aside). I think of early starts for hot August days, not freezing November. It was really nice late morning today.

Homage to Roadkill

We drove by this scene five times in East Stroudsburg, PA on the on-ramp to IS 80 as we commuted to PEEC/NAOC last month.

These two I found on web under creative writing, poetry (on this bounteous day):

Try It, You Might Like It
Raccoon lying in the ditch
Not the fare that feeds the rich
Marinated in both oil and gas
Someone better get there fast
Baking in the summer sun
His eyes just popped; he must be done

..ain't this delish?
Is roadkill 'coon a tasty dish?
Get over it; don't be so pensive
Roadkill meat is less expensive
Than head cheese, cow's tongue, or pig's feet
Stuff that man's been known to eat!

A lamentation I wrote today with a portion of 10 miles for thought:

O wayward creature
did you consult your preacher?

Don't ask me,
I’m just a passerby
who didn’t hear your cry.

I am not kin with thee...
am I?

Oh my,
I am.

In the many mammalian ways
we've co-evolved through bygone days.

Yet now we stop
and part our ways.

We go on,
but not as you:
our way to play,
your’s to rot away.

How sad,
how bad.
No reason to be glad.

We have travelled here so far:
you to be hit by a car,
we to depart with your scar....

No reason to be glad.

Trail/woods running 38:00 [2] 2.5 mi (15:12 / mi)

Route
Meadowsend after work. Forget running shoes so home it was. Thought HNP or Meadowsend as compensation for my having to come home as well as deal with dogs. So Meadowsend it was. One hunter at start, several cars, no sightings, no shots. Saw two white-tails leaping off into woods from a field. M'send's 70ac is mostly logged so crappy underfoot. Got to thinking I needed a consistent direction to get out on time & east-going logging trails led to larger ones to deliverance. Very mild.

305 not charged. Found an ans under "305 won't charge" - reset it & now it seems ok. Thought it was dead.... Many happy commentors on that particular thread!

Note

Noteworthy - doesn't appear to affect O maps - very unfortunate, however:

Hiking 2:30:00 [1] 2.72 mi (55:09 / mi)

BOS perimeter walk of KRTF with Ken, Lisa & Eric. Met on Knox road, spent the time walking easement boundaries where houses were. No infractions of significance. Some deer offal close by one house, 2 stealth cameras (one focused on the offal to see who might come to chow down) and still later a deer skull right in the middle of the path, maybe 200m away. Went to the PL & returned along Journey Way.

Forgot 305.

Wonder if this is training - not CV-wise but time in woods walking/perusing is still worth something along the lines of training objectives pursued.

Walking 42:30 [2] 3.2 mi (13:17 / mi)
shoes: Nike Lunarglide 3

Went back with dogs for a run. Started on Robinson Rd. parking (had gps watch but alas, not fully charged & quit after 20'). Came upon yellow blazing which turned out to be Boulder Tr - went by the "biggest bldr in Bow" - the trail wound thru lovely woods. Nice to see this forest from paths vs perimeter. Went over the little bridge built the day of the scout meet, also saw the huge tree that fell on trail. Did not get to see where BT came out as I needed to turn around & recognized one of the flat, thru/return paths not 20m away thru the woods - was getting near Bow Center Rd by then. Went right by the site of deer skull, gone by then. Interesting how hilly it is on one side, flat on the other. More interesting an area than I've given it credit for. Not even sure if i entered School Forest. 318 ac - 1 km sq=247 ac so not very big, feels bigger.

BBR-WH-Allen loop, seldom done these days. Getting out the door early is a good solution for SAD sapping of energy. Do the day's run when sun is bright, the 'spring moment' of a November day. Done by 1015. Chasing the 60' limit at the end - used to look downward toward 50'.

Can't recall Z or M on this route. Recall Molly when maybe 1 yr old. Telling her it was time to come for the leash as BBR traffic was next. The young dog thinking "catch me if you can" was the game of choice...my lying down under a street lamp playing dead with the hope of grabbing hold & that barely possible.... Seeing very little humor in the moment at the time. c 1998-9.

Walking 57:17 [1] 1.49 mi (38:27 / mi) +97m 31:59 / mi

Hiking in North Country with Beth & dogs. Went to the Flume for first time & stumbled upon a nice, wide gentle path in returning. Flume was indeed impressive as well as neighboring Liberty Gorge & the Pool. Some young people were "tightroping" across the upper Flume. Being after season, it was all very agreeable. After went to the Basin & then to never-visited Sugar Hill for coffee. Went into the Sunset Hill Inn there, asked the receptionist where we could buy coffee. She led us to the parlor where there was free coffee & muffins as well as a fabulous view of the Whites. Sometimes you get lucky.
305 started after Flume.

Could not muster enthusiasm for the BHT & so preserved myself for another day.
