Auburn Sky-club, Motala

X-Skis race 1:52:00 [4] 13.0 km (8:37 / km) +250m 7:52 / km

Spent night in Truckee, at Jay's house. Morning started with news that 80 is closed both directions for undefined time due to snow storm. Finally reopened at 11. Took for me more than 30min to dig up car from snow, more than 1 meter deep. Understood why locals drive huge tracks with extra big clearance...

Motala at Auburn Ski club. Trail system is small but dense, making navigation interesting. One trail, some 400m segment, was not groomed at all, had 2 controls located in the middle, not pleasant task for skating skies. Second time took off skies and walk uphill, which was faster than trying to so on skies. Would not be a problem for classic skies. Another problem caused short trail, shown as normal on the map, but not suitable for skating - realized this only when got to the trailhead. Would take a different route if knew this in advance, cost me 1.5+km extra.
Generally, day 2 was way better and interesting. Should consider buying membership - only $30 per season for family, when 1 day pass usually is ~$25 per day per person in all other resorts.

Soda Springs, near Tahoe, Ski-O

X-Skis (Skating) 46:00 [3] *** 6.5 km (7:05 / km) +50m 6:49 / km

First time on skies in 2 years. Were late because of freeway 80 closure due to zero visibility in the mountains and many incidents. Could take backcounty roads, but hesitated, was not sure about driveability, and if road is cleaned from snow. Tapio risked and saved more than 1 hour. We staid for 2+ hours in the traffic, not moving at all for a long time. Was wise enough to drive Subaru, didn't spent time putting chains, and driving was way faster and safer.

Weather was really bad, strong wind with snow, children with grandpa managed to get only 1st control on White (not speaking that white was 4km, 6.5km optimal route) and were back. I took white map by mistake, but didn't feel sorrow, as for the first time was quite tired by the end. Also, trails were groomed in the morning, with 5-10 cm fresh snow, which made skating hard task. Last 3 controls were already collected when I got to them, missed control pickup party by some 5 min, not more.
