Ski Touring 1:00:00 [2] 5.11 km (11:45 / km) +267m 9:19 / km
ahr:89 max:118

Wee kit test for E’s new touring set up on Langgadlie. Up the long way by the track then straight down through the fields. Headed back up again through the fields but stopped for ~45’ to construct a ramp across the midway fence. Then on up to the top and back down. Deep soft snow - nice but found it difficult to get much beyond my racing snowplough again. Really do need some downhill lessons sometime.
Surprisingly weary after yesterday’s outing although it didn’t feel like an effort at the time.

Ski Touring 4:00:00 [2] 19.28 km (12:27 / km) +873m 10:09 / km
ahr:104 max:145

Tour de Feughside hills inc CPs 85, 88 and 90 with SS. From FoB Kirk A-c starting with Gannoch, Tampie then over the other side of the Fungle to Hill of Cammie and Cock Cairn. Started off lovely, but cloud clinging to the tops and got caught by a nasty squall coming through on the way to HoC. Had planned for Battock too but would have been pushing daylight and snow was tricky in the low vis stuff. Main descent back down the track from CC was on lovely soft snow and v pleasant. Good day out with lovely company.
6 PM

Note

Right knee still a bit sore. Didn’t feel it at all out skiing but sore after.

Such fun yesterday :-) Feeling a bit tired and muscle sore, but hopefully nothing worse.

7 AM

Running 1:00:00 [3] 10.1 km (5:57 / km) +220m 5:22 / km
ahr:155 max:183

53 4 53 Pt 1 with ME. Learney Hill. Just about light enough at 7:30 without the torches. Couple of cms snow on the tracks giving better grip than the underlying ice and nice running. Lovely start to the day.
10 AM

Running 1:38:03 [3] 14.21 km (6:54 / km) +227m 6:23 / km
ahr:139 max:161

53 4 53 Pt2 with J. Dinnet Muir and CD from Dinnet, taking in the cross slab and BoV CPs (#21,22). Lovely as always. Feet a tad sore by the end and hammie niggling a wee bit, but otherwise all good. Lovely as ever.
12 PM

Running 1:09:00 [3] 10.29 km (6:42 / km) +229m 6:02 / km
ahr:153 max:172

53 4 53 Pt 3 with RB. From her house along the river then up onto Breda Hill. Feeling ok once I got going, although hill was a bit of a struggle! More good company and chat making the kms fly by easily enough. No major aches or pains during this. Still in dobbs, but switched to a different pair.
4 PM

Running 1:09:00 [3] 10.82 km (6:22 / km) +181m 5:53 / km
ahr:136 max:155

53 4 53 Pt 4 with SR. From Aboyne out round the Loch then over into Coull and back by the TW. Stiff at the start, but felt pretty good later in the run! Decided to give the feet some more comfortable shoes and got away with it no bother - just one wee icy section on the TW. Lots of smiles.
5 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 7.81 km (8:04 / km) +211m 7:06 / km
ahr:127 max:159

53 4 53 Pt 5 with BS. Last but not least. From Potties up to Ordmore CP (#23) then back across to Potarch side. Endeed up doing just out and back on the big track to get the distance. Only run of the day where ice was an issue and it certainly dropped the pace wearing comfy shoes. Otherwise feeling really not bad for the end of a long run.
53.2km, ~1100m climb and ~6h run time on slightly snowy paths and tracks.
Fab day with great company :-)

X-country skiing 1:25:00 [3] 10.11 km (8:25 / km) +228m 7:34 / km
ahr:106 max:151

From Suie out onto Mire of Midgates and Badingair Hill. Set off with J and E but the latter was faffing and whinging and I didn’t have the energy to deal with it, so carried on alone and never met up with them again! Bit slow heading out, but whizzed back in good time once I knew where I was going and started to get more relaxed with the skis.

X-country skiing 25:59 [3] 3.6 km (7:14 / km) +64m 6:38 / km
ahr:112 max:150

Back and forth to stay warm whilst waiting for the boyz - had thought I was going to be in trouble for holding them up !

11 AM

Ski Touring 2:10:00 [3] 12.54 km (10:22 / km) +510m 8:37 / km
ahr:93 max:134

From Tillypronie out to the Preas Whin eagle and back with J and E on the bc skis. A bit rubbish heading out through the forestry initially - thin snow trashed by vehicles - but conditions lovely once we got higher out on the hill. Even managed to enjoy most of the descents! Great wee trip and fab to see E enjoying it so much.

9 AM

Ski Touring 4:00:00 [2] 21.06 km (11:24 / km) +851m 9:29 / km
ahr:99 max:156

Tour de Corgarff with RB. Set off with a plan of doing a loop over hills to the south and west of Corgarff castle finishing over Brown Cow Hill. Started up onto Cairn Culchavie, but as we climbed it got gradually crustier and icier and it seemed like GBs suggestion that we ski the south and east facing stuff was probably wise. So we dropped back to the glen finding an ok line , shuffled across the semi frozen upper reaches of the Don then climbed up onto Craig Veann. From there back along to Carn Ealasaid before descending back to Cock Bridge. Found plenty of lovely bits of compacted pow that made for great skiing, though you did have to pick your line to string it all together. Feeling like I’m really starting to build some confidence with this stuff.
Fab day with blue skies, little wind and good company:-)

Friday Jan 22, 2021 #

Running 1:40:00 [3] 13.49 km (7:25 / km) +431m 6:24 / km
ahr:132 max:167

Allt Cailleach and Coyles of Muick with JS. Had hoped to ski but time constraints, weather and other factors made this the best option. V chill pace with J nursing an injury and me feeling generally wappit. Breathing seemed to be all over the place too. Nice run back down the side of the Muick on thin snow / crusty ice - good for stretching the legs out a bit more.
Wee wander round Loch Ullachie after.

Thursday Jan 21, 2021 #

Note
(rest day)

Proper one. Had to force myself out for a wee walk.

1 PM

Running 1:03:00 [3] 9.24 km (6:49 / km) +276m 5:56 / km
ahr:146 max:175

Craiglash (CP 95 #19) with SR from Corsedarder memorial then a loop round Finzean woods. Few cms of fresh snow, but paths mostly clear of any ice underneath, so not too difficult going. S hasn't lost any of her speed during injury time out and I felt heavy and slow! Good catch up though :-)

Running hills 55:00 [4] 7.03 km (7:49 / km) +315m 6:23 / km

Long hills in the woods taking in a couple of segments - bridge to high point heading over to DAP 7’+, ski run ~4’ and final one to top of old power line ~4’. Happy to take the crown for the first and improve crown for ski run, especially as legs weren’t feeling particularly fresh.

Ski Touring 3:05:00 [3] 17.56 km (10:32 / km) +702m 8:47 / km
ahr:99 max:143

CP bagging loop from Spittal of Glenmuick with KH. Allt Darrarie, Black Hill of Mark, Lair of Aldararie and Black Hill (54,55,52,51 #15,16,17,18). Snow wasn't looking too promising at the start with an awful lot of heather and rock in between the white stuff. It soon improved climbing onto the hills though and in the end was fine to pick a line all the way round, although the final section of the descent was definitely agricultural! All easy angled, so wasn't too out of my depth with K. Not quite the blue skies of Friday, but wind wasn't bad and we stayed out of the cloud. Really enjoyed it :-)

9 AM

Running 1:52:00 [3] 13.71 km (8:10 / km) +521m 6:52 / km
ahr:133 max:177

Shooting Greens to Goauch and Scolty with ME. Managed to get ourselves lost on Goauch again - really must take a map up there sometime and look at it! Bit icy on some of the bigger tracks but managed to avoid most of it in the forest. Nice run and catch up.

Ski Touring 3:00:00 [3] 13.18 km (13:39 / km) +657m 10:56 / km

From the Little Lecht up onto Scraul Hill then Monagowan, Tom Liath and Lary Hill with Ros. All very straight forward technically. Beautiful day, amazing snow, no wind and fine company - what more can you ask for? V memorable.
CPs 56, 57, 58 (#12,13,14).

Running 34:58 [3] 5.03 km (6:57 / km) +156m 6:01 / km

Woods and fields with J avoiding the icy bits. Legs feeling v heavy on the climbs. Dreich day.

6 PM

Running 1:15:00 [3] 9.75 km (7:42 / km) +407m 6:22 / km
ahr:136 max:174

Craigrath (CP100 #11) from Raemoir with JS. Managed to forget my headtorch and discovered that the batteries in the back-up were as good as useless - oops. J had a spare mini petzl, so we set off with 1.5 torches and I crossed fingers that he wouldn't abandon me! Headed up via Craigmad (something about the name?) managing to lose the track somewhere going up the hill, so a bit of fun Raemoir snow-covered terrain. Then more terrain cutting to the higher track towards Craigrath, but it was better going than anticipated. Return via the icy snow-covered track. Lovely still evening. Good chat. Perfect.

Running hills 40:00 [4] 5.7 km (7:01 / km) +367m 5:19 / km
ahr:158 max:174

5 x DW hills from bridge to turning area. Each ~4:30-4:40. Jog back down and repeat off a 9' cycle. Legs a bit heavy but felt good to be running. Nice to grind this out :-)

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.7 km (7:24 / km)

Short loop round the woods to the DW bridge and v short jog after hills. Almost ice free under the trees and a cracking day!

Note

A largely unplanned ‘rest’ week from running, but it’s been good to make the most of the white stuff while it’s here and to get a different focus. Might even make some progress and build a bit more confidence in the hills on skis if the winter continues in this way. Aside from that, my foot is feeling less on the edge of breaking and am not noticing the hammy niggle when on skis, so hopefully the change will be as good as a rest too. Would be good to try and get a weekly quality run session back into the plans, but otherwise will continue to go with the flow for now.
10 AM

Walking 34:30 [1] 2.6 km (13:17 / km) +177m 9:54 / km
ahr:100 max:125

Hike up the Fungle to the snow line at the Guard

Ski Touring 2:45:00 [3] 13.27 km (12:26 / km) +284m 11:14 / km
ahr:108 max:138

From the Guard out to Baudy Meg (CP84 #10) then cut across to the Fungle and back down from there. Snow cover thin initially, but ok on the tracks in the open. Bit of a nightmare trudge through breaking crust into heather onto the top of BM and back to track. Cut round to Fungle was a cruddy slog too but would have been worse on foot! Pleased to reach the Fungle track and enjoyed a nice ski from there down as far as snow line before hiking back down the hill. Not memorable for the quality of the skiing but a much needed solo escape for my sanity.

Ski Touring 2:45:00 [3] 14.35 km (11:30 / km) +632m 9:25 / km
ahr:90 max:140

Epic E Glen Muick ridge from Creag Dearg (CP 62 #9) to Cairn Leuchan with E. Took J up on his offer for a 1 way ski after hurting his rib yesterday. On backcountry skis with kick skins for the climb up CD. Started out on the track, but it was soon filled in with drifted snow and better going off piste. Zigzagged steadily up to the top - slow going and hard work but nothing too tricky. Wind was vicious and by the time we’d got skins off, unfrozen the ski bindings to get them back on etc. we were very glad to get moving again. Wind largely behind us now thankfully and even better we picked up a recent skidoo track which resulted in the most awesome ski ever along the ridge. By the time we reached CL the wind was stronger than ever and bringing spindrift in from the side - rueing forgotten goggles at this point. The descent off CL was impossible on the back countries with a metre of powder on steep ground. Don’t know how many times I fell over, but it was getting back up again that was the biggest challenge! Better going once we got down to the big track, but my legs were stuffed by then. All round epic outing and feeling well cream crackered now! Out for 3:15 total.

X-country skiing 2:15:00 [2] 13.06 km (10:20 / km) +463m 8:47 / km
ahr:116 max:151

From Glencat up onto Coreybeg, along the big track behind Lamahip, part way up onto Brackenstake along the line of the shooting butts. Then back to Lamahip and down off the north side. Snow v thin low down, but surprisingly skiable due to frozen ground. Big track up the top just lovely. Another cracking day and good to get out and make the most of it. With J and E.

X-country skiing 1:10:00 [2] 6.68 km (10:29 / km) +216m 9:02 / km
ahr:90 max:132

From Learney top cross-roads up to high point on HoF on the backcountry skis. Had hoped to get all the way over to bag the Craigrath CP, but was squeezing this in between meetings and short of time in the end. Some lovely bits of skiing on the forest road and decent snow all the way, but the upper path is a bit narrow for my liking on descent. With J and E.

11 AM

Running 1:50:00 [3] 13.68 km (8:02 / km) +482m 6:50 / km
ahr:120 max:143

Absolutely stunning day which would have been rude not to enjoy. Work can wait. Headed up the Fungle and onto Carnferg from the back, then got side-tracked by Brackloch Craig (CP89 #8) on the way back. Mostly ok going underfoot - couple of icy bits of track down the bottom then well compacted snow on the track from the Guard up over. Amazing views to Lochnagar etc. Close to a major food bonk by the end as I hadn't planned to be out for so long and didn't take anything with me - need to restock the running vest for emergencies! Bit tired physically but this was so good for me in every other way :-)

Tuesday Jan 5, 2021 #

2 PM

Running 1:15:00 [3] 11.07 km (6:47 / km) +161m 6:19 / km
ahr:163 max:183

Along the river bank to the wee bridge to the island (CP93, #7) and then on further to Bellwood. Back by the old road. Ice fest everywhere, but managed to avoid the worst of it by keeping to grassy tracks etc. Met D+JW also heading for the island, then JK in the woods. Legs feeling pretty heavy from Sunday still and died on the way back up the hill to home. Decided to put off hill session a) because of above and b) to make sure I didn't have a repeat of March first Lockdown Tuesday injury!

Turbo trainer 30:00 [3]
ahr:126 max:157

Steady workout on the turbo with just a couple of short sprint efforts that I couldn’t resist. Good day for it with sheet ice everywhere.
3 PM

Ski Touring 1:00:00 [2] 5.85 km (10:15 / km) +201m 8:45 / km
ahr:102 max:139

Last minute escape with E in fear of no travel for exercise allowed during Lockdown (seemingly not the case, phew). Found just about enough snow to skin up Benaquhallie on the back-countries. Bit of a sketchy descent at the top which I happily woosed, but surprisingly ok lower down. E survived with knee still intact and we managed without the headtorches, just = success.

Running 3:35:00 [3] 24.16 km (8:54 / km) +731m 7:44 / km
ahr:127 max:164

Long run from Ballater with JS, taking in DR CPs on Craig Vallich, Cairn Leuchan and the Rocking Stone. Arrived at Ballater at the same time as ME and RB planning to do something similar (at least for the first half) completely by chance. We set off first so had the moral high ground and extra training effort of doing the trail breaking through a varying depth of snow! Took the track up the Pan and then along the tops. From Cairn Leuchan returned to the wee hut before heading down the line of the Pollagach Burn towards the Rocking Stone. Couple of km of heavy duty off piste wading, but picked up the path again after the RS. Back by the low path through Inchmarnoch etc. Grand outing with good company as ever :-)

Ski Touring 2:00:00 [3] 10.96 km (10:57 / km) +725m 8:14 / km
ahr:107 max:158

Solo tour onto Glas Maol from Glenshee. Bitter wind on the tops and summit shrouded as I approached, but cleared out into a cracking day. Gradually building some confidence in touring in the hills and was good to do this solo for that reason, but would definitely feel more at ease with some company.
Out for 3h. Still lots of faff with skin changes, but slowly getting a bit slicker.

Grand wee adventure with J to kick start the year. From Keiloch out to the Prince’s Stone (CP40), then on to Creag Doin (CP37). Icy on the path right at the start and plenty of snow higher up, so a bit of a plod. Forest and hills looking wonderful in the snow. Put up a white hare from behind a boulder.
Fun fun fun :-)
