Orienteering 2:23:08 [3] *** 6.2 km (23:05 / km) +345m 18:04 / km
17c shoes: Saucony Trail

Red(!!!) at Calero with Presto! I wasn't planning to run red today, but they were out of green maps by the time I got to the start, and I thought brown seemed a bit shorter than I wanted to run, so I figured I could always quit if that seemed like the smartest move and set off on red.

First of all, the good things: I ran/slid on slippery ground/trudged up super steep hills/slid down super steep hills/minced my way through evil grass for nearly 2.5 hours without any knee pain! Presto had a good time and then was all sleepy and floppy the rest of the day :-).

That being said (and the no pain thing is huge!!!), this wasn't really my best showing out there. I made a bunch of mistakes which were particularly costly with the steepness, and was just generally sort of slow and wimpy with respect to the vegetation. I also was totally convinced that I should contour around things even after like 6 controls in which I started to contour around, only to discover that I didn't actually have enough traction to stay stuck to the side of the hill and needed to go down or up and around.

Anyway, I'm super excited about successfully being out orienteering for so long without pain, even if I made the fun extra long for myself!

Running 2:02 [3] 0.5 km (4:04 / km)
shoes: Saucony Trail

Running from the finish to the cars.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Nice long stretch at home. My knee still feels pretty good, but I think I will be generally sort of sore (in a good I-did-a-lot-today sort of way as opposed to a bad I'm-injured sort of way) tomorrow.

Roller Skiing 1:02:50 [3] 8.5 mi (7:24 / mi)

Roller skiing with Presto on the Iron Horse Trail! Sam couldn't come today, so he let me use his poles, since my poles are a bit short for skating. That being said, his poles are a bit long for me, but it was good to get a chance to use longer poles. I was definitely able to work harder out there than last time. Presto also seemed happier with booties on, which was good, and it was a bit cooler today (although still around 80). Fun, fun!

Strength 14:00 [3]

Abs plus stretchy band glutes.

Roller Skiing 29:50 [3] 2.9 mi (10:17 / mi) +220m 8:20 / mi

Roller skiing with Sam and Presto up the hill! Fun little jaunt after lab. Presto was generally excited today :-). He's liking the slightly cooler weather, although getting out before dark is getting harder and harder!

Running 36:12 [3] 3.4 mi (10:39 / mi) +220m 8:52 / mi
shoes: Brooks Running 14

Running with Presto! I was a bit worried about doing anything that would involve significant downhill, so I decided to basically run the route that we normally roller ski and then walk down the trails and steps. I did end up running a bit of the downhill as well, particularly on the streets connecting the trails, but this worked really well! I wasn't really moving very quickly, but the jog up the hill actually felt quite easy, which was nice. I also used a running leash my sister got for me that attaches around my waist instead of holding a leash in my hand, which I think lessens the amount of unbalancing that having an excited Presto in one hand causes. Speaking of excited Presto's, running at sunset made for quite the excited Presto with all the deer that were out and about. All-in-all, a successful outing!

Strength 14:00 [3]

Normal abs plus 1 rep per leg of each of the stretchy band glute exercises. This seems like a much more sustainable post-workout strength routine.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching with an emphasis on my particularly tight calves.
