Orienteering 1:22:25 [3] **** 10.0 km (8:15 / km)
ahr:169 max:179 spiked:34/37c shoes: Integrators 2005

A nice long Orienteering course on the terrain next to the upcoming NA Champs terrain outside of Hamilton, Canada. The course was 10k and had 37 controls with 4 butterfly loops. I had never run a course with butterfly loops before, so that was interesting. It was a little confusing at first to keep track of which control to go to next since the main control in the middle of the loop was always numbered for the last time you were supposed to use it. So for example we ran from control 3 to control 4 which was the middle of a butterfly loop, but control 4 was marked as control 10 since that we came to it 3 times and the last time it was the 10th control. Basically we went from 3 to 10 to 5, 6 and back to 10, then 8, 9, and finally 10 again before going to number 17 which was the beginning of the next butterfly loop.

The terrain was really cool though. It was quite flat with 2.5m contours to make things interesting. There were lots of little hills and ridges and quite a few rock features so that it almost felt like a flat version of Harriman. There was quite a bit of snow on the ground though which slowed things down a bit. I took it pretty easy since I was tired from all the training. I felt confident in the terrain although I did make one pretty bad mistake from simply not paying attention. The funny thing is that control was the middle of a butterfly loop and I messed it up both the first time and the third time I came to it. Pretty stupid.

It was a really fun course though and I really liked the terrain. Hopefully I will be able to make it for the NA Champs in the Fall and kick some Canadian ass!

Just a nice easy warm up on the trail to the start of the course. Feeling pretty good although a bit tired.
