Orienteering 45:00 [3]

US O Team & FLO A meet: Sprint/Model

Energy level and legs ok -- no complaints. Top priority is to observe, get a feel for the contours, and understand the vegatation; racing was secondary. Started out easy. Train of people in the middle of the course made nav. easy. Running with Dylan at the end. On the way to C10 a thorn went through the topside of my shoe and it just kept getting worse. Foot distraction and poor map reading caused me to miss C11. Kind of ran/hopped in to the finish. Pulled a nice 1cm thorn out of shoe/foot. Warmed down running part of course again. Found a couple of the dry ditches just to see what those were like.

Stategy for weekend:
* Contours are indeed my friend and very readable.
* Strict compass control needed to read contours.
* Run with eyes/head up to take in big picture and broad features.
* Hill tops are helpful for locating and good views.
* Didn't think major trails were that bad to run on, particularly with the rain.

Freescale Austin Half-marathon: Lisa & TNT

Run race 1:29:12 [3] 13.1 mi (6:49 / mi)

Freescale Half-marathon in Austin. Cruddy morning. Too early, too wet, and too cold. Should have worn tights or compression shorts as my quads were too cold; felt flat while running. 1/2-M course not too interesting -- suburbs and light-industrial areas. Marathoners got a tour of UT, downtown and the river for the 2nd half.

Plan was to not work too hard and use my HRM to keep the BPMs down; I didn't want to kill myself with FLO coming up next weekend. Ran a bit faster than normal long-run pace but not as fast as race pace. Probably ran about 5 beats/min faster than maybe a should have but I think I'll recover fine. Couldn't help racing the last mile as I looked to be close to breaking 90. After about 400 m I eased up thinking that it was dumb to push now given that I hadn't the whole race. But then I turned the last corner with ~150m to go and enough time to break 90 min so I surged in at 1:29:30ish. Time includes a few seconds to get to the starting line, slow first mile due to crowds, ~20sec pit stop behind a tree, and ~1 min pit stop in a port-a-john. Time benefits from a net ~250ft downhill course.

* Each time I took a pit stop the "3:10 pace crowd" ran by and that bugged me so I had to get back ahead of them.
* From about mile 7-10 I was running with two high-school kids and people kept shouting "Go Thomas!" I figured one of them were named Thomas and had their name on their shirt. They pulled out at mile 10 but people kept yelling "Go Thomas!" and I was quite confused... until I looked down at my race number and saw that my name was printed on it.

5 mi: 0:36:43. HR:A = 143
8 mi: 0:56:51. HR:A = 149
10mi: 1:09:57. HR:A = 149
12mi: 1:23:05. HR:A = 150
13.1mi: 1:29:30. HR:A = 162 (fishy split).
Overall HR:A = 148.

Chip time: 1:29:12. Clock time: 1:29:30.
Overall Place: 117
Males Place: 101
Age Place: 16/256

Run 10:00 [3]

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

Compass work at Arbor Hills. Easy running. Good exercise before FLO. Also, can't have two weeks without orange in log.
