trail 34:05 [3]

Short trail loop. Was looking forward to running since TNT was aborted last night but my legs felt like lead weights. It was odd since I really had in my mind that I was going to feel great. But the time for the loop is reasonably good and I ran the whole thing.

Note

Just checked back through my log and the time is a minute faster than the last time I ran the loop which was about two months ago.

Yoga/Pilates (Pilates DVD) 40:00 [1]

Not sure if I like this pilates dvd. I'll have to do it again before deciding but I was getting tired of the Core DVD.

orienteering race 1:21:23 [3]

Overall a better outing although I made one bone-head error. I punched at 10 which was control #111 and then decided I had been to 11 and should be heading for 12. What made this particularly bone-headed is that I overheard Kristin at the finish telling folks that she had done exactly this same thing. When I realized my error after a bit and headed off to 11 I wasn't exactly sure where I was and it took a while to decide what I was seeing. A shame since these were the nicest and most runnable woods and I was hesitating trying to sort it out. A couple other bobbles in the circle.

But very happy with the two days worth of orienteering especially given how sick I felt Thursday night and Friday morning - I very nearly didn't go at all.

And today (Monday) knees and other joints all feel surprisingly good.

orienteering race 1:38:57 [3] 4.9 km (20:12 / km) +260m 15:58 / km

GreenY course at NEOC. No major errors but a few silly route choices, some hesitation, slow going on the downhills and not much running anywhere. But I had tons of fun and really glad I came.

map hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Field checked the few remaining control sites for the regular courses and then spent a long time trying to figure out what to do with the relay/sprint/sprint-relay. We usually have a relay, but I thought a sprint might be more fun. But, there have been some considerable changes to the terrain - not such a big deal for most courses, but a problem for a sprint. So I spent some time trying to record map updates in case I want to try and redo the map in the area I wanted to use. I'll have to sit down and think about it some more.

I'm not totally happy with the courses, but don't have the time to start over so I think I'll just let them be.

running 51:54 [3]

TNT - with Bob and Jim, 3 miles on the drive. Walked down, 9:55, 9:35, 10:38 for the mile splits, walked the trail up but jogged the road to the corner.

running 1:00 [1]

My sister was in town with her husband who had a business meeting. So I met her downtown and we spent several hours wandering around the parkway museum area, including city hall and up the river drive past boat house row. We threw in a Rocky rendition at the Art Museum steps just because.

map hiking 5:00:00 [2]

Course setting at Fair Hill for the MidAtlantics. Talked Valerie into joining me for the day and the company was excellent. Not terribly demanding physically - we walked the whole thing - but we were on our feet for five hours. Need to fiddle with the courses a bit; rats - I was hoping to get everything done in one trip.

A big international horse event there this weekend which meant we had to park out in the hinterlands and walk a long ways just to get to where the courses are going to go. But it was fun to actually see some steeplechase riders and watch the horses jump the jumps and gallop down the fields.

running 54:00 [3]

TNT - with Bob and Jim again, same workout, 3 miles on the drive walking down and back up. Hopefully soon I will either be able to jog the hill home after running 3 or be able to run 4 on the drive or both. Pretty much 10 min. pace:
5.00 - didn't start quite at the marker so should probably add 10 seconds
5.01
4.51 - a little uphill, but I think this half is a bit short
4.34 - turn around so same half downhill
5.16 - getting tired
4.58 - a final push

Note

In Chicago for a work-related thing tomorrow. Took Chicago transit downtown and walked around the loop area for a couple of hours just seeing the sights; enjoyed myself quite a bit. Millenium Park and some of buildings in the surrounding area are quite impressive and having the lake right there was rather unique. And the Chicago Marathon was today so I went and wandered around the finish area; I've never been to any of the large marathons so that was also kind of cool.

trail 1:03:40 [3]

Run and walk with Sandy on the trails of the Wissahickon. So cool to have someone to run with like that. And it was sort of a spur of the moment thing too.

Note

Got home too late last night to drive to Harriman this morning. Oh well.

Yoga/Pilates (class) 1:15:00 [2]

Some things seem impossible and others I can definitely see progress.

Note

The offer by Jon Campbell to run the team trial course for the cadets on Pole Brook on Saturday is very tempting. Is it worth the 2 hour drive though?

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]

Late night session. Now that I have figured out (duh!!) that I can play the dvd on my laptop while I have something else on the tv, this was a lot easier to get myself to do.

running 55:26 [3]

TNT - with Jim and Bob, 3 miles on the drive. They both claimed they didn't want to go far nor fast and so we ran together for most of this with them clearly able to go faster but willing to keep me company. I warned them that I wasn't going any faster than 10 minute pace and possibly quite a bit slower than that, but we did 3 in 30:15 so just a tad over. First time I've run 3 miles in a good while and I probably wouldn't have done it on my own. We did walk down and back up though. A good dinner afterwards and so a very satisfying TNT.

Yoga/Pilates (class) 1:15:00 [3]

Another good class.

Note

I think I need a plan, a la Mary. I seem to be drifting over into lots of yoga and not much running and never any o specific training. Not good. Will have to think about how to turn this around.

strength & stretching (Core DVD) 40:00 [1]

Hadn't done this in a while and those side raises got the better of me again. But I got through them.

walking 1:00 [1]

A stroll on the beach at the Jersey Shore.

Note

Had this weekend at the shore planned for a while, but still feeling ambivalent about deciding not to do the Highlander or at least the Lowlander.

running (sort of) 47:41 [3]

A fairly big disaster. Walked down to the drive where I hoped to feel good enough to run 3 miles. A little after the first half, had to make a pit stop in the bushes and it never got much better. Walked some, ran a mile in 10 minutes, walked up the hill, tried to jog the road and couldn't even make it to the top. Bleah.

Note

At least I got the yard mowed and the flower beds edged.

Yoga/Pilates (Yoga Class) 1:15:00 [2]

A fantastic class, kept moving the whole time, lots of strength stuff, my back bends are coming along (no where close yet but a very steady improvement), and I was doing hand stands pretty well. Side planks were my achilles heel today though - one good one each side was all I could manage. Small class tonight so everything was geared for each of us.

walking 40:00 [1]

Checking streamers and then taking down streamers for a corporate team building orienteering program at the Ace Center. Ed Scott set it up and then asked if I could cover for him. I said ok since the Ace Center is only about 2 miles from my house. The folks seemed to have fun and a few asked me about orienteering afterwards. I figure I can log it since I was walking fast and since it was somewhat hilly even broke a sweat. :)
