Note

I haven't posted anything from the weekend yet. I will at some point. I'm really disappointed in my Sunday effort so part of it is just being a bad sport but I'm also totally exhausted. I'm not sure why but it's been a struggle to do anything except eat, sleep, read and watch tv since I got home. I don't feel sick, just incapable of doing anything requiring effort.

Also, I have to fix my GPS track before uploading.

I'm cruising down the GSP on the way home and I periodically hear a buzzing sound but can not figure out what it is. I decided to stop for a quick rest and to check to make sure I had put my shoes in the car as I was having visions of having left them in the grass next to where I had parked. I open the hatch and my shoes are there - whew! - but then I notice my GPS watch is buzzing and I realize I never stopped my watch after finishing. It was going off every mile and then telling me I was crushing records for fastest mile and most miles and other things.

So, I have not wanted to download my tracks until I figure out how to fix that.

Course setting scouting at Germantown Academy. Really amazing campus. Should be fun but I am redoing all my tentative plans after seeing exactly what things were like and where it is reasonable and not reasonable to go.

My extra loop at #8 is just depressing. Totally lost focus and then could not recover.

Watch didn't kick in until almost #1. I started it before I had GPS signal.

Note

Not feeling all that great and my knees hurt and Roger had had enough so I chose to go back to the hotel and skip the sprint. I made the right choice but I'm sorry I missed it - it looks like a really fun sprint with a lot of unusual twists.
9 AM

orienteering 41:05 intensity: (44 @1) + (1:52 @2) + (7:28 @3) + (13:12 @4) + (17:49 @5) 1.83 mi (22:27 / mi) +95m 19:21 / mi
ahr:139 max:182

Started watch 3 minutes early at the call up line.

Reasonably clean outing but not very fast. My bad route choice was to try to go straight down a rocky cliff on the way to #9. I ended up having to sit down and slide in the mud - should have taken the time to go around as it would have been faster. Annoyed at the end when I could read whether or not I could through the fence closer to the finish so went around but you actually could get through.

Class at the gym. I was really sore yesterday and my knees were bad today. I may have to rethink this whole running idea.

map hiking 1:00:00 [3]

Drove down to FDR and checked it out during the time we will be having our first event there. Wanted to get a sense of how busy the park was. There was lots going on, but not by the American Swedish Historical Museum, so things should be fine. Vandalism is still a concern but here's hoping it will be okay.

Checked all my control sites and had to move a couple. Things have greened up considerably and I didn't always guess right on what would be mowed consistently. Ah well.

Also checked out the exhibit in the museum. Lots of really interesting stuff. I hope people take the time to visit when they come for the event.

ahr:140 max:167

Around the meadow loop, pace counting and walking half as many paces as I jogged. I was trying for 200 jog, 100 walk but a few times I didn't make it to 200 so I just cut down the walk. I didn't have an asthma attack - luckily it's been years since that's happened - but I could definitely tell my allergies were in full swing and it was hard to breathe. More than just being out of shape.

cardio 48:10 intensity: (4:51 @1) + (9:57 @2) + (20:08 @3) + (10:33 @4) + (2:41 @5) 1.39 mi (34:39 / mi)
ahr:118 max:167

20 minute warmup on the treadmill followed by session with Colleen.

Did some 30 second jog/30 walk on the treadmill without increasing the speed to get my heart rate up - looks like I was successful at that.

Finished the session alternating 15 squats holding a 15 lb kettlebell with 30 seconds of mountain climbers which also got my heart rate up.

ahr:118 max:162

Relentless up followed by relentless down. Have wanted to redo this hike for a while and do it not in panic mode like the last time. Talked Dennis into coming with me and we had a nice time. I was surprised by how many people were climbing up and how many were up on the top when we got there. I guess it's a popular hike.
2 PM

walking 55:00 [3]

Followed by walking Baine after we got back to Dennis's house. Baine has some issues and Dennis is trying to train him to walk calmly. It was reasonably successful but with a couple of episodes of lunging and barking at other dogs.

Event: DVOA Batsto

11 AM

orienteering 1:10:49 intensity: (5 @1) + (1:23 @2) + (13:03 @3) + (43:16 @4) + (13:02 @5) 3.69 mi (19:12 / mi)
ahr:136 max:186

Green course at Batsto. There was general agreement that the map was funky in certain places - many of us were having trouble with our compasses. They had a large controlled burn there last year so the woods were open and we were able to use sections we had to avoid before because of the thick blueberry everywhere. I think this exposed some problems with the base map. But it was still just a fabulous time - I love how I don't have to worry about turning an ankle or breaking myself on rocks since there aren't any. And the recent rain had compacted the sandy soil enough that it wasn't energy sapping like other times.. I actually ran on several legs although I'm out of shape enough that it didn't last for long.

The overnight rain was supposed to clear out by midmorning but it was still misting on me for most of the run. But still glad I made the time to get out there. The open woods won't last long.

cardio 1:00:00 [3]

Class at the gym. It was a substitute teacher and she normally does the boot camp or kickboxing classes so it was a little different - lots of cardio stuff which was great. Really enjoyed it.

This felt like a plod but it was still nice to get out.

Session with Colleen. Mostly arm stuff but finished with a 2 1/2 minute wall sit with 25lb plate in my lap.

ahr:134 max:170

Meadow loop with Sandy - lots of short sections of jogging.

Very sore butt from yesterday's training session. I choose to believe that it is getting stronger and helping my knee.

ahr:107 max:155

Quick warmup on the treadmill (including a couple of 30 seconds worth of jogging) and then a session with Colleen. These were surprisingly hard and these were as hard as always.

orienteering 1:25:17 intensity: (1:02 @1) + (2:04 @2) + (8:57 @3) + (38:16 @4) + (34:58 @5) 4.04 mi (21:07 / mi) +103m 19:33 / mi
ahr:140 max:177

A much, much better outing. Still hesitant in places and a couple slight bobbles but nothing like Saturday. Took a long route through the field after the spectator control and couldn't run at all; it would have been embarrassing if I thought anyone was watching.

I thought the course was fine and the legs were interesting but I was surprised there was no really long leg on the course. Just eliminating #2 would have given a nice longer leg from 1 to 3 with a lot of route choice.

ahr:133 max:176

Ugh. This was horrible. Three big errors and lots more hesitations. Really struggled. Not sure what to make of it. No confidence, second guessing myself, not bonding with the map, trouble telling up from down on the contours, just not a good day.

Note

A bit sore from yesterday but not too bad. Really struggling with how much less I seem to be able to do these days than a few years ago.

Did this with Barb Bryant. Neither one of us wanted to push it; we were more interested in whether we could get through something this long and work together well as a team. Sort of a trial run for doing a rogaine together. That said, the length and time and climb was going to be more than anything I've done recently. So the plan was to get the mandatory controls, a handful of optional ones if they were on the way, take it easy and try to enjoy it.

And we were successful on all fronts. It was beautiful weather and we had a good time. I was second guessing things a lot - just not getting my head into AR mentality well enough I suppose. Made two errors - one in the prologue when I thought Barb said no she hadn't gotten it when she said yes she had so I thought we had to keep going and a second one when they switched to a 1:5000 scale and I didn't notice and climbed way too far. (The format was neat - you got one map with the 5 mandatory controls and then at each one of those you got a second map showing a bunch of optional ones that you could get on the way to the next mandatory one. The additional maps were all different scales.)

In the end we got 7 additional controls - all the ones we tried for. We deliberately skipped optional controls that were in the worst of the rocks after really struggling with a boulder field early on. And then we had to choose whether to walk around on a relatively flat road a couple miles to the finish from the last mandatory control or go up and over the mountain and we chose to go around. Not really in the spirit or the race, but it was a good choice for us.

A relatively speedy hike around the meadow loop with Sandy.

Back still bothering me a little from Sunday. :(

cardio 45:00 [3]

Shortened class but the instructor was good. They are still having trouble finding someone to cover the class - this instructor had to book it out early to go teach at a different location.

strength & stretching 30:00 [3]

Work with trainer. Highlights were chest presses with 15lb weights in each hand and side and front arm raises using 8lbs. Ended with a weighted wall sit for 2:15 - I probably could have gone longer but I was bored and she only wanted 2:00 so I called it a day.

My back is still a little sore and I don't want to overdo things before Saturday.
