Up and down the three half flights of stairs in my house. I didn't have anything loaded on my mp3 player that I wanted to listen to so I did this without any entertainment. I think 20 minutes is about all I can do of these without something to distract me. Did some trying to run up the stairs and some double stairs but mostly just plain since it's been quite a while since I've done these and didn't want to overdo it.

Major success just doing something this evening.

orienteering 2:17:45 [3]

The short stumble. I like Rocky Ridge a lot and had a good time. I was hiking so nailed every control but took one bad route and one questionable one. There was a good bit of running to be had - either trails or nice woods - so I'm way down on the results, but had a great time.

Yoga/Pilates 1:00:00 [2]

A yoga DVD with Sandy A. Jelly arms by the end. My flexibility needs lots of work too. Rewarded with Karl's mushroom soup.

orienteering 57:45 [3]

Decided at the last minute to head out to FCN. Nice brown course. Fell a few times even though I was only walking fast. I duct taped my ankle and was being very careful of it so of course I caught my other foot on something causing me to bend my bad knee much farther than it likes to go. The pain doesn't last but boy is it excruciating for a little while. One bobble on #6 - didn't trust my compass work even though I was headed right to it and ended up having to circle around.

Just a quick hike to see how my ankle was doing. Wore my boots just to give it some additional support. It seems okay.

orienteering race 57:31 [3] 4.2 km (13:42 / km)

Brown course at the Mid-Atlantics. I went down last night and stayed with Valerie and helped with some event prep and had a nice dinner and chat. I went out early intending to rest and run a leg on a relay. I goofed on #4 and started following the line to 5 instead of 4 (the course crossed itself with 6 back close to 3) so lost some time there. But the bigger problem was on my way to 6 I turned the corner at a trail junction, stepped in a hole of some sort and rolled my ankle. Not the worst sprain I've had but a pretty good one. Took a minute or two of rolling on the ground before I was ready to stand on it and another minute or two before I was willing to try and jog. Luckily I was almost done with the course and headed back to the finish so a no brainer to finish. But I decided sticking around and trying to hobble around the short easy leg on the relay was not the smartest idea so headed home.

It's somewhat swollen now and will be tender for a few days. I'm pretty bummed since I had started to think my knee was feeling good enough to start trying to run a bit during the week so I could run more while orienteering. Oh well. So it goes.

trail 40:00 [3]

Forgot to hit stop on my Garmin after I finished so it ran all day and doesn't want to download. Hiked down to the drive, jogged half a mile on the drive very slowly, then hiked back home.

orienteering 51:13 [3]

Brown course. Okay run - no real errors although I suppose I could have gone a little straighter in a few places. But was happy with my route choices. I ended up using trails a lot but was able to run (slowly) for many of them. I probably won't go back to that park - not particularly interesting and enough thorns and stuff on the ground to make around routes on trails a better choice most of the time (at least for my course).

I've been doing some exercises for my knees and I think it's helping as I felt a little more inclined to run than I have in a while. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Note

I can tell where I fell - it's the one place on the track where the speed spikes down and the heart rate spikes up.

Loop in the Wissahickon with Sandy. Trails are treacherous with all the leaves so I wore one of my icebugs with studs; it helped. But it didn't mean I didn't trip over my own feet and scrape myself up.
