Terrain (Gravel) 24:00 [2] *
shoes: MT110

Warmup on the Katy with 6 striders at the end.

Running race (Mix) 31:33 [5] * 5.0 mi (6:19 / mi)
shoes: MT110

Flat 5. Solid run. Was particularly happy with going through the first mile in 6:09 (target was 6:10). As usual, once we got along the river, the humidity was stifling and I had to back it off a bit. The transition to gravel at 3.5 didn't go particularly well. I've used the 110's in this race before and they stuck OK, but I guess the tread has lost it's bite (not surprising as they've got well over 1000 miles on them). That sent the pace all the way up to nearly 6:30 as I was slipping with each stride. Still, only 15 seconds off my PR for the course and third male (no age groups in this race) is my first time on the podium in four tries, so I'm not the least bit disappointed (especially after last night's antics).

Terrain (Grass) 17:00 [2] *

Warmdown around Frontier Park.
2 PM

Terrain (Trail) 2:14:00 [2] ***
shoes: Boca AT

Wholehearted Loop to check out the trail conditions for Carol's Fat Ass. Absolutely perfect is the best description I can come up with - should be a fun 52K next Saturday.

Running (Road) 55:00 [2]

Ridiculously sub-optimal pre-race run.

Plan was to run late in the afternoon. Kate and I were attending a rather extensive wine tasting in the evening (also sub-optimal on the day before a race, but it's not like the Flat 5 is my big event for the year). Problem was that she thought it started at 5. At 3:15, she found out it started at 4. So, that nuked the run. The tasting was great (12 pairings, plus some dessert samplings). Since it was spread over 4 hours and the pours and portions were appropriately small, I was neither too full or to buzzed to run. Knowing there was no hope of running well after 48 hours completely off, I tried to salvage things by going for an easy jog. I can't say it was much fun, but it did work remarkably well. The heat and activity forced my body into metabolizing the remaining wine and I ended up sleeping quite well with no stiffness in the morning. Still not a stunt I care to repeat, but no harm done.

8E 8M 1E on the way in to work. Didn't sleep well last night which is often an indicator that the needle is close to being pegged. Of course, it could also be an indicator that the top floor of my house doesn't cool very well when it's nearly 100F out. So, I decided to go ahead and run this one with the option of cutting it short if my body wasn't up to it. I certainly FELT like cutting it short, but wasn't in any great duress, so I go it all in. The last mile of m-pace may have been counterproductive as I was starting to overheat and pulse went up to around 165 just to maintain pace. A few easy days coming up, so I think I'll be fine.

Running (Road) 1:12:00 [2]
shoes: Lyte33 2

In to work on roads. Super humid an the legs were definitely feeling Sunday's effort. Made me wonder if I'd be able to run intervals.
6 PM

Running (Track) 1:10:00 [4]
shoes: Grid A2

12x400@85 400R with the Fleet Feet Team.

But it turned out that I ran them pretty well. Went by feel since it was super hot (and I forgot my watch), but ended up running all of them under 86, which was my target. Most were 85 or 84.

Very easy jog round the hood. Glad I started at 4:30 so nobody would see how slow I was going. Had a reasonable stride by the end.
